About

While sitting in a cafe sipping tea, we reflected on the benefits we find in preparing and enjoying the beverage each day. After recognizing its role in our daily lives, and lives as a whole, it became clear that this was an idea we would like to explore. If we could see these effects on a small scale in our own lives, what could be learned from conducting research on a larger scale? A plan to visit tea shops across the country, documenting the physical culture and commenting on its impact, was born.

We will be driving to as many tea shops as we can in four months. Each night we will be setting up our tent and brewing tea over the campfire as a part of the journey and to keep expenses down. At each location we'll capture photographs, conduct interviews, and record observations as the means to document what we consider to be the emerging tea culture. At the end of the journey, we will spend the winter months compiling our findings in a quiet, focused space.  The end product will be a comprehensive book displaying the people and places that embody this culture as well as drawing conclusions about its impact on American society as a whole.

The funds will go to purchasing a digital camera (we have been shooting on film, but feel this would be cumbersome and expensive for an extensive project), supplying fuel and sustenance for the trip, securing campsites, and finally publishing the results.

Currently, there is very little information on modern tea culture. This culture has a focus both on sustainability in relation to the environment, participating in the current surge for cutting down waste, and in relation to our way of life, in attempting to bring some calm and rest to our increasingly busy lives. In both ways we feel that this movement towards considering the long term points in the direction we could be going as an entire culture and feel much could be learned by studying it now as it is taking shape. If you've seen the benefit of tea in your own life, or if you're simply interested in witnessing an emerging culture, please help us by backing this project. Thank you!
