I understand that this is where I'm to entice you into investing in my project, and that I can upload a video of me wheedling and begging for money. You can see that I have absolutely no problem with that. I started this Kickstarter because I wrote a book. Well, actually, I've written a few books, one of which is here. That book was written to be a sort of primer to introduce you to my characters and let you know a bit about their world (and my writing style).
Let me take a moment here to tell you that I understand your fear.
I'm not talking about writing scary stories. I'm talking about the fear that comes from picking up a self-published book and wondering why it was self published instead of through one of the the big publishing houses. In my case? Time. It takes years to get a book released, and I am not a patient man. On the other hand, a real, physical book will always outweigh (literally and figuratively) an e-reader version. I am not some archaic fool who won't release an e-version, far from it. There will be electronic and audio versions of all of my books, I just happen to feel that there is something magical about pages turned by hand and the unmistakable smell of a bookshop.
The amount that I am asking for is the printing and shipping costs for me to print 1000 copies of the book, the same number of books that I printed of the novella. If the Kickstarter goes well, additional copies will be printed. I will sell the Rise of the Steam Goddess for $10 at conventions and $15 online to cover shipping costs (so pre-ordering it for $10 is a total bargain!).
About the books themselves - they're a late Victorian era series of stories that use Steampunk elements, but aren't drowning in them. I use advanced technology based on the actual inventions of the time, simply advanced further due to one historical difference in our world and theirs. Charles Babbage actually built a Difference Engine, starting the information age in the 1840s rather than the 1940s. Add to that the fact that I treat the horror fiction of the Victorian era as literal truth; combining vampires, werewolves, shape-shifters, Jack the Ripper, biblical lore and everything in between into one world - you get a sense of what I'm doing here. I'm a rabid history nut and you'll often meet real people in my books. It's important to me that the historical people you come across in my stories really were where I have them at the time that the characters interact with them. So you could consider the books historical fiction as well, if you need a more 'literary' label to interest you. But really? If this next sentence doesn't entice you, you might not be my target audience.
Jack the Ripper and a vampiric priest do battle with steam powered zombies.
Yup, that happens in this book. Donate early, donate often!!
The $500 pledge gift was unique to being written into the next novel in the series and I do not want to lessen the experience of that generous pledge (THANK YOU!). That being said, I AM a colossal whore and there ARE 5 books planned. You can still pledge at that level and I will make sure that you get all of the swag listed, and I will write you into one of the following three books.
