The story takes place in a version of the modern world where magic and fantasy creatures are real and paranormal society is regulated by the government in order to both avoid exposure, and minimize interference in normal human society. Changeling immerses the player in its own, unique lore about common fantasy fare such as Vampires and Faeries. The player decides how Nora navigates the odd and dangerous situations in which she finds herself, as well as how her personality is portrayed to other characters. Choices stack up and contribute to what information is discovered during the course of each story route, as well as what potential endings the player encounters. Certain decisions significantly impact the content and scenes the player has access to as they read.
Nora Lewis is a senior at Stone Circle Academy and a self-reliant girl who has rarely found herself at a loss in any situation. But her life is upended after she joins a club at school and discovers a world of paranormal creatures she didn't know existed.
Nora learns that her best friend is a Witch and her other clubmates are a mixture of Vampires, Werewolves, and Wizards. When the others reveal that she's not a normal human either, Nora feels that everything she's ever known to be true about the world has just been proven false.
While working to uncover the mystery behind several incidents in her past which may be connected to her supernatural origins, Nora begins to realize the secret of her identity may be darker than she thought. But if she can solve her own mysteries, she may be able to salvage a crumbling relationship with her increasingly angry and paranoid twin brother. First, though, she has to stay alive in a paranormal society teeming with danger – with the help of one of six guys, each of whom has his own unique problems to deal with.
Each story route has a standalone plot that revolves around the main character researching her origins while navigating unforeseen dangers that start flying her way the moment she finds out she might not be human (because they always wait until that moment). There's a bit of mystery, a bit of romance, a bit of humor, and a lot of drama and danger. The story is told in first person, through Nora's incredulous and often dryly sarcastic narrative.

Changeling has a large and varied cast, but here is a small selection of minor/side characters we've already designed. We intend for all side characters, including most of the extras to have sprites.
Our current sound track was composed by the fantastically talented Eric Matyas of soundimage.org. Eric has hundreds of wonderful tracks up for royalty free use and our project currently makes use of quite a few of them. But with a successful Kickstarter, we would be able to work with Eric to make an original soundtrack just for Changeling.
You can listen to some of the tracks we're currently using below:
Bog Creatures on the Move:
Our main focus is to ensure that the final product is as polished as possible. Successful crowdfunding will enable us to hire people to be able to fill the gaps in our current team so we can ensure the final game is worth the price.
While the game isn't currently planned to have complex game play features (like mini games), we are planning to have a nice selection of extras to enhance the story as well as amazing in-game content to really immerse the reader in the plot and bring the characters to life.
The bulk of our funds will go to art. Since this is a visual novel, we definitely do not want to scrimp and scrape when it comes to the 'visual' part! We do have a capable artist working on the game but Esh is currently both the lead artist and the lead writer. Her time is split between both trying to finish the remaining 250k words of script as well as completing the 30 CGs we'd like to have in the game, 12 remaining backgrounds, all the remaining sprites and a few extras and items we'd like to have show up during the game.
Additional funding will help us bring on additional artists to ease the burden of completing CGs and backgrounds so she can focus more of her time on completing the script!
This money will be set aside just in case something goes wrong or we need more assets than we can foresee at the moment. If we end up with leftover funds in this area, they will all be put back toward the game and our stretch goals.
The core programming was largely done during the demo. There are a few additional features the game needs, which will, in turn, need the expertise of an experienced coder. Funds provided by the Kickstarter will help us make the GUI more polished as well as add functionalities that will make the game more interesting and interactive. We will also be able to spend extra time editing and fine tuning the writing to make sure the final version of the script is as awesome as possible!
Currently all the music in the game is royalty free. Funding will allow us to commission a selection of original tracks that are perfectly suited to the mood and setting of Changeling. We really look forward to being able to work with Eric Matyas on this! If we end up with contingency money left over, we can also use it to expand the sound track.
We don't have many physical rewards but we need to be sure we set enough money aside for printing and shipping the ones we do have!
This amount is set aside to pay for fees incurred during Kickstarter and other campaigns.
Need a visual to help you keep the rewards straight? We got 'cha covered!
Obviously if we get funded to our original goal, we'd like to use any extra funds to increase game content or improve and/or add to the game features. Here, you can see some of the stretch goals we have in mind for Changeling!
Lisa Eshkenazi: Original concept, Lead Artist, Script writer
Stephanie Schauer: Script Editor, Writing Assistant, Social Media Manager
GUI coding: Ayano, Candace Lindenmayer
Trailer: Eli Eshkenazi
Original Logo: Alison Bradley
Music: Eric Matyas
The main reason for Kickstarter is to allow us to hire assistants to help with sprites, backgrounds, additional art, coding the script, and writing. Though much has been completed, there is still a lot of work left to do on this game.
With enough backing, we can improve art quality, get an original soundtrack, and add additional features and game extras – all of which work toward creating a more polished and engaging final product.
As a start-up group working on our first commercial project, backing and fundraising are super important to success. Kickstarter is definitely a great way to get your idea out there to a wide audience!
How else can I help?
Spread the word! Any re-blogs, retweets, let's plays, reviews, etc are extremely helpful for getting the word out and potentially getting more backers to our project.
Risks and challenges
Changeling has been in development for quite some time. A sizeable chunk of the assets are complete, as well as much of the programming for the core game features necessary to make a basic, functional visual novel. There's no reason to assume that, with funding, we won't be able to release the game in late 2017 or early 2018. As always, unforeseen events can throw a wrench into even the best plans and schedules; however barring a major catastrophe there isn't any reason Changeling won't be completed – as long as we have the funds to expand the team and delegate some of the work.
As a new studio, there is bound be a learning curve with this game but barring major life developments and catastrophes, our main concerns are time management and having funds to acquire more talent for the project!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
