A dark faerie tale about love, baked goods, circus and courage. Support our play's first run in NYC!

NEW GOAL ---------> 3K!!!!!

You guys rock! Thanks to you we reached our original goal, so we got festival fees and insurance covered. However, we still need $1000 more to be able to pay our cast and team, to build/make/purchase sets+costumes+props, to get real baked goods for the show, to print flyers and programs... There's more to be done. Please pitch in! And spread the word to others!

"The Dreamer and The Acrobat" started out as a poem in September 2010 titled "Apple Pie" (which you can find in its entirety at the bottom of this page). The poem struck roots in the mind of performance artist Stav Meishar and was developed into a full-length play combining baked goods, circus and video art.

The play has been chosen to take part in the Frigid New York Festival, which is a fringe festival that takes place in the East Village every winter, this year from February 20th through March 3rd.

It's a huge honor to be accepted to the festival, but also a huge expense - and we need your help to make this happen!

The play tells the story of Mallory - an agoraphobic baker who never leaves her shop, eager to experience the world but terrified to try. Her customers – a zesty holocaust survivor, an amusing gay couple and a dorky zookeeper – have become her closest friends and share with her the joys of the outside world.

Then one day the circus comes to town with Mallory's best childhood friend – the acrobat Gitano. They grew up together, making up worlds in their heads – and Mallory has been secretly in love with him since. If she wants to be with Gitano, Mallory must overcome her fears and join the outside world before the circus leaves.

We have an amazing director on board - Rachel Klein who was nominated for a NY Innovative Theatre Award in 2011 and whose dark, unusual works have been performed in some of Off-Broadway's and downtown's most important venues such as La Mama, Dixon Place, The Bowery Poetry club and more.

We have set our goal at the minimum necessary to make this happen. There are many expenses and every dollar counts. We hope to surpass our goal and to be able to give this play the production it deserves!

WHERE WILL YOUR MONEY GO?

Your contributions will help fund:

  • Paying the festival's performance fees (for the venue, publicity, etc.)
  • Purchasing Volunteer Accident Insurance for everyone involved

If we surpass our goal, we will also be able to:

  • Pay the people involved (cast and team)
  • Make set pieces, costumes and props
  • Printing programs and postcards
  • Get real baked goods for the onstage bakery

and the sky is the limit! But remember - it's an all-or-nothing type of fundraising, if we don't reach our goal we get nothing... So please pitch in and help us bring this show to life!

Apple Pie, The Poem - September 2010

  • There was a young woman
  • Whom some found unique
  • Though she seemed pretty normal
  • She was kind of a freak
  •
  • Her mind - a pastiche
  • Of art she adored
  • Her soul was a quiche
  • Made of memories she stored
  •
  • But her heart was, in fact, the true apple of her eye
  • Quite literally - for she baked it into a pie
  • She wrapped it in dough were it lay like dessert
  • Undisturbed by the world, far away from all hurt
  •
  • But hearts, like pies,
  • aren't meant to be hidden
  • They're meant to be tasted, enjoyed,
  • not forbidden
  •
  • And so, on a cart
  • (Like a fine piece of art)
  • The pie with the heart
  • was pushed with a start
  •
  • It was sent to the market
  • Where, among other treats,
  • It was put on a table
  • Next to Dickinson and Keats
  •
  •  And lo and behold,
  • (Cue the bells, cue the choir!)
  • The marvelous pie
  • has landed a buyer
  •
  • He was handsome and kind
  • His smile was quite lovely
  • But though seeming refined
  • He was, in fact, pretty hungry
  •
  • He gorged on the pie,
  • It was gone in a flash
  • The apples, the dough
  • Oh my, oh, how rash!
  •
  • For in his rush to finish his plate
  • The boy hadn't noticed the heart he had ate
  • He chewed and he munched, he had quite the feast
  • And when he was done bought the copy of Keats
  •
  • The woman went home with a mind full of art
  • and a soul full of memories
  • and a chest torn apart
  •
  • There
  • (As all could see)
  • Was no wound, and no gash
  • Just a hole, wide open
  • With leftover apple mash

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

There are challenges and risks to any project, but we are beyond ready to tackle all of them! We have an amazing festival behind us, a great rehearsal space acquired, super talented people on board... Any artistic obstacle is totally covered, it's the technical obstacles that will require your financial contributions to overcome!

This play has been in the works for 2 years, it's ready to burst out of the cocoon and become a gorgeous butterfly, we are simply challenged by the amount of $$$$ it will take to get it produced.

Now all we need is YOU!
