A Collection
States of the Union will be a print, color, non-partisan book composed of reactions to the results of the 2016 presidential election. In the book, there will be works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, artwork, and interviews. We are creating a book that functions as a time capsule. Through strong and representative works of art—no matter the opinion, no matter the creator—States of the Union will strive to challenge our partisan bubbles and foster insight and understanding between one another. We will donate a substantial portion of our proceeds to charity.
Of Election
This election season has created a climate that seems unparalleled. A common thing heard over and over was how divisive this election was proving to be. With this book we are trying to accomplish the creation of a platform. People of all beliefs, locations, ages—everybody—will have an opportunity to be heard. In creating a space that provides uninterrupted, undisputed time for YOU to say what you think and feel, States of the Union is working to document history. We are creating a book full of people who text books might miss. We are putting in print the words of the real people, those most affected by the politics of it all. It is incredibly important to preserve the climate at this flashpoint. We are working hard to document the time in between Donald Trump winning the election and his inauguration.
Reflections
We are opening up to all people. We want to know how they feel about Donald Trump being elected President. What do they think? It is important that we hear from a broad array of perspectives and people. Only then can this project reach its full potential. This means time and money doing outreach, traveling, and connecting.
Funds
Money raised will go towards:
- Color printing
We want the book to be printed in color. Because of the pieces of art in it, we really feel the project won't capture the work without being printed color.
- Hard copy
We think it's important that there is a physical book. We want the book available for print distribution, as well as an online version, though. Having the book available in print also increases the visibility and likelihood that it can be used in classrooms as a reference and resource text.
- Upfront costs
Because we are self-publishing that comes with a lot of upfront costs to get us off the ground. Website costs, promotions, distribution...the list goes on and it all adds up.
- Travel for interviews
We don't want to pass up any, within reason, in person interviews due to travel restraints.
We want to be able to put out the best book possible. We plan to donate a substantial portion of the funds to charity, but don't want to compromise the quality of our product.
Team
I, Michaela Papa, have a background in visual arts, am a writer, and have worked in the publishing field for many years now. I am ready and able to compile this book. On my team, I have also brought on experts in their fields. Writers, editors, artists, proofreaders, marketing specialists, filmmakers...the list goes on. I am so honored and excited to have the support of the States of the Union team.

Nothing says perfect present like a preorder of States of the Union. When the book arrives, it's like ANOTHER present!

Risques et défis
We decided to create a Kickstarter to act as a sort of preorder for the States of the Union book. A risk we have, because we are self-publishing, is that we print too few or too many books off the bat. We are ameliorating this through the Kickstarter. This way, we can gauge the interest in the print book and adjust our orders accordingly.
A challenge that we face is reaching as many people as possible to contribute their work. We want to document ALL perspectives and reactions to the results of the 2016 U.S. presidential election. We are reaching out to universities across the country, schools, teachers, clubs, adult education centers, councils, bookstores...as many places and communities as we can. If we had the funds to do so, we would like to reach out through more paid advertising. Because our submission window is so short (deadline being January 27, 2017) we are racing the clock to get diverse, quality content.
