UNLOCKED STRETCH GOALS
Our artists are now hard at work designing a set of dirty looking humans for our meeples! We'll be showcasing these images as soon as we can! With these new meeples, we can make Atom Metro Zoo come to life even more.
We've also unlocked our first Community Pack and a new game mode! In our Community Pack is a new location (the toxic-filled Sewage Tunnels) and the release of a new calamity that takes place there (the Bear-bonic Plague that has infected the mice who dwell beneath the surface). On top of that, we're adding 3 more unique items to the game! We'll be releasing some draft art for them within the next few days!
For those who have been asking about Solo/Co-op mode, it's here! You can check the companion rulebook for it right here:
What is Unbearable Winter?
Start Something Studios presents a catastrophic survival game that is sure to keep you bear-ly breathing - Unbearable Winter. You and your group of friends have to survive the panda-monium of Atom Metro Zoo, a once state-of-the-art wildlife attraction, now reduced to an apocalyptic mess. The is a game of survival against the odds, mixed in with social deduction, where one of the players is secretly a baddie trying to wreak havoc right under their noses.
The zoo is now teeming with human survivors (who obviously only think about themselves), semi-natural disasters, and all sorts of frightening mutations and diseases that the nuclear winter has to offer. However, the worst of these threats is not out there, but from within. Amongst your sleuth of bears, one of you has been driven mad by the radiation, and will stop at nothing to cause total annihilation.
No two games are the same! With a wide range of wacky calamities that bend the rules of engagement, this game of survival will test your mettle and wit as you maneuver through these tragic times. Worry about the winter, protect your home from the homeless humans, and be wary of the bad bear -- all in the name of overcoming this Unbearable Winter!
Unbearable Winter is already fully designed and ready to go! But since we're launching on Kickstarter, we want to do something more! Over the course of the campaign, we're going to design an 8th character with the help of the community.
All backers will have access to our Discord server, and from there we'll commence a poll that will allow everyone to be a part of the design process. From the character's name, backstory, look, special ability -- we're going to let the Kickstarter community have something special in their game that won't be released in the retail version.
So who knows? We could end up having a character named Cofefe the Stuffed Teddy Bear who can shoot beams of radiation from his eyes. Or maybe Cofefe could be a Gummy Bear! The possibilities are endless, and we want you to be a part of it!
This project is promoted by Jellop, the ad tech power behind the best Kickstarters with 650+ successful Kickstarter projects with over $300MM raised between them.
How the End of the World Looks Like
Welcome to Atom Metro Zoo, or at least what’s left of it! This state-of-the-art zoo was once filled with tourists who would come from all around the world to see this marvel of an establishment. Of all the attractions, the most impressive was Bear Valley Hills, an enclosure unlike any other, which could accommodate bears from every different climate all under the same roof.
But the past is the past. After the bomb dropped, barely anything was left. The tourists who once filled the air with laughter and joy now trudge through the zoo, plundering whatever they can get their hands on to survive.
The animals of the zoo have also started to mutate. Lions with envenomed fangs, snakes with limbs, and elephants with multiple trunks. Yikes! But hey, that’s what happens when nuclear wastes seep into the enclosures, it’s science. You'll have to navigate through Atom Metro Zoo's nuclear-transformed locations just to survive.
As a good bear, your objective is to survive 5 calamities of this harsh nuclear winter. It won’t be easy, but with enough trust and a whole lot of gumption, hopefully you can get through these chaotic times.
These critical calamities and loco locations are going to put you through terrible physical strain, and the winter itself is going to constantly pelt down upon your home. Cards will sometimes force you to roll the Nuclear and Winter dice.
When rolled, the Nuclear dice will whittle your health tokens away while the Winter dice removes cage bars to protect your home, Bear Valley Hills. Obviously, you don't want your precious bears to lose all their health, and certainly you want to make sure that your home remains intact during this unbearable season.
Working together is essential as you’ll need to gather the bear necessities to survive three different types of calamities -- with the resource type indicated at the bottom of each calamity card. You never know how the nuclear winter is going to test you, so gather as many resource cards as you can.
However, let’s not forget that it’s a wasteland out there, and that means sometimes you’re not going to get the things you need. Tough luck.
When you and your sleuth gather in the night, it’s time to contribute. Take the relevant resources and gather them up. After all, sharing is caring. But that beckons the question: who in their right mind would contribute these rotten resources to the group?
Unluckily for you, someone’s little bear brain has been turned to mush by the nuclear radiation. And they’re out for total annihilation.
There's a big crazy zoo to explore in Unbearable Winter, and no two games are ever the same.
Grab your friends. Pick a bear. Survive the winter.

Meet the Bears
They call him the ‘Black Bear Baron’, and boy does he live up to that moniker. Slick, as his name suggests, is suave, hefty, and overflowing with so much testosterone, he makes Lou Ferrigno look like a milksop who hasn’t hit puberty. As a natural born leader, Slick is great at dispatching his enemies, and isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty every now and then -- which is perfect for roughing up some human scavengers in the nuclear winter.
Struck by a melting iceberg as a toddler in the Arctic, Foggy stopped growing physically ever since. She curses Global Warming daily for this defect, but surreptitiously enjoys her petite physique. To many in Bear Valley Hills, Foggy is a ‘Master of Disguise’. She could go from cute and jolly, to obnoxious and feral in a matter of seconds, leaving the other Bears in perpetual awe and bewilderment.
Chest press, crunches, and deadlifts, to name a few, were all the things Musk could think about, even in the face of a nuclear meltdown. Some might say that’s insane, but he calls it gains. He behaves like every frat boy you’ve ever met, all bod but very little brains. But who cares about brains? Lady Bears dig his luxurious brown fur, hairy pecs, and thick-- oh, you get the gist.
Flash, with his bright fur and cuddly mass, is a natural in front of crowds, kids adore him, and adults applaud him. A circus trained Sun Bear from Cambodia, Flash’s amicable demeanor and sheer optimism were cultivated by his beloved trainer, Sophea, who he loves so. In this apocalyptic wasteland, however, Flash wonders if he’ll ever get the chance to see her again.
The product of a pioneering experiment and sold for a king’s ransom, Moist is the only successful Tardigrade-Bear mutation known to the world. She is significantly tinier than other bears, but not microscopic like an actual tardigrade; think the size of a chinchilla. Moist is essentially 90% Bear and 10% Tardigrade. Her warm beady eyes, irresistible smile, and stumpy anatomy make her one of the most endearing attractions down at Atom Metro Zoo.
Bamboozle is not your regular Panda. Armed with an extensive library of mostly inaccurate knowledge of science, animals, and the world, he was coined the ‘Renaissance Bear’. After the bomb dropped, Bamboozle became obsessively possessive of his collection of books, donated to him by tourists who came from all around the world to see this remarkably literate bear. But will his knowledge help him and his friends survive?
John was a former employee of Atom Metro Zoo. He adores animals, especially bears; he firmly believes he is destined to be one. Sadly enough, John’s fiery obsession with the furry creatures led to his imminent dismissal from the zoo after he was caught sleeping in the enclosure overnight. Undeterred by his fate, he sought other means to make Bear Valley Hills his permanent home, and the result as you can see, oddly worked.
Our stretch goals are aimed at creating more content for our backers! While we've playtested and balanced the cards for our stretch goals, we aren't at the capacity to fully commission the artwork for them. As our campaign funding grows, we want to make sure we're giving even more back to the community.
When we reach the end of our stretch goals, it won't be over yet! We'll look into creating even more goodies for the community! We're always listening in the comments and on our Discord channel, so feel free to let us know.
The Special Community Card Pack includes 2 new locations, 3 calamities, and 9 item cards.
If we hit all our social goals, we'll be commissioning 8 new artworks and designing new special abilities for all the bears in the Kickstarter Exclusive version of the game. That means you'll have 8 more characters to choose from in the final version of the game!
Reward Tiers & Shipping
Here's a breakdown of what you're going to get by supporting our game!
It's very important to us that you get the best deal out of this. We're working closely with some of the best fulfillment and shipping offices, many who have worked with other successfully-funded Kickstarter projects. Your enjoyment of this game means a lot to us, and that means getting the final product into your hands on time, safe and sound.
Start Something Studios was born of a simple question: if not now, then when? We've been friends for over two decades now, and the topic of creating a game always comes up every now and again. Someone will say something like 'Wouldn't it be cool if there was a game about...' and we would go on and on about our crazy ideas.
Towards the later half of 2018, something just clicked. For most of us, life was at a turning point. And all it took was one guy to say 'let's just go for it' and we began searching for the dream team.
Along the way, we've partnered up with some amazing creatives whom this product could not be made without. Most important of them are our talented graphic designers and artists, Zi Qun, AK and Marilyn.
A huge thanks for the bear-rilliant people behind Unbearable Winter!
Thank you to the great Kickstarter Community!
Throughout my years on Kickstarter, I am always amazed at the wonderful community of backers. Thank you so much for clicking on our campaign and even making it all the way to this point in the page. We really hope to make this dream of sharing joy with the world a reality, and every dollar you pledge means the absolute world to us. Thank you, thank you, thank you, from the bottom of our hearts!

MANUFACTURING & PRODUCTION
For our studio, this is a fresh endeavor into a full-fledged Kickstarter project. However, this is not our first rodeo producing and manufacturing with our factories in China (and we speak fluent Mandarin). We've sourced a sizable number of factories, and we've found one that we are happy with in terms of production quality, track record, and pricing. It's important for us that you receive a great product based on all these fronts.
GAME DESIGN & PLAY-TESTING
Before embarking on this journey, we made it a priority to source out a competent team of skilled artists, designers, and producers to work on this project. The product is already fully designed, sans the stretch goal artwork and the community-built Kickstarter Exclusive 8th bear (which should be absolutely no problem to design and deliver on time). All we need is the funding to push the button and get these straight to the printing press and then into your homes and at friendly local game stores. This project has almost been a year in the making in terms of game-play design, and we've had extensive playtests on this game since late 2018. What you're getting is a polished product, and as our campaign grows and more content is unlocked, you can rest assured that these cards have already gone through rigorous testing in our alpha and beta phases.
SHIPPING AND FULFILLMENT
We know that getting your product on time is of the utmost importance, and that is why we are working very closely with trusted shipping and fulfillment companies to get your copy of the game safely into your hands. We're working with trusted fulfillment companies right out of Singapore and Hong Kong so that there are minimal hiccups. These companies have shipped other successful Kickstarter board games before at various scales, and based on our consultations and conversations with them, should have no issues whatsoever with regards to our campaign fulfillment.
TRANSPARENCY, CONTACTING US, AND UPDATES
At the end of the day, there may be certain obstacles that are beyond our control, but we are committed to updating all our backers regularly during and after the campaign with full transparency. As backers of other games ourselves, we know the importance of being accountable, and as such we'll have our Discord channel and e-mails more than ready for you to contact us. We'll also be active in the comments section of our campaign page. During the campaign period, we want to communicate as much as we can with you, so feel free to reach out to us should you have any concerns.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
