An independent, feature-length film set during the time of Enterprise.

About this project

 OPENING SCENE

ABOUT THE FILM

Horizon is a two-hour feature film that follows Captain Harrison Hawke and the crew of the Earth vessel NX-04 Discovery. In 2160, the Coalition of Planets, a young alliance of worlds led by Earth, is at war with the Romulan Empire. Desperate for a chance to gain the upper hand in the war, the Coalition forms an alliance with T'mar, a Romulan defector, in the hope that she can provide valuable intelligence on her former masters.

It is our goal to create a film that is worthy of the franchise and can close out the story threads left hanging after the untimely cancellation of Enterprise (the final Trek TV series) in 2005. However, if you have not seen any of the previous franchise films or TV series, this close tie to Enterprise is not cause to worry. While this film will close out story threads that began in Enterprise, it will also certainly tell an original story and be able to stand alone as a science fiction feature film.

We've slowly been making our presence known on the world wide web via social networks, YouTube, and various forums, but now our official web presence is live!

MAIN CAST

Paul Lang

Harrison Hawke, the captain of the NX-04 Discovery for the past two years, has a strong knowledge of battlefield tactics through many encounters with the Romulans and other species.

Commander Jackson Gates is the first officer of the NX-04 Discovery and a long-time friend of Captain Harrison Hawke. Logical and deeply devoted to duty, he wears the hats of first officer and chief science officer with ease.

 WE NEED YOU!

"Anything worth doing, is worth doing well."  These words by author Hunter S. Thompson perfectly capture the spirit behind the creative process of this film.

While it would be entirely possible to create a low-quality, second-rate version of this film on an extremely limited budget, we want to go above and beyond the mediocre to produce a visually stunning, artistically engaging story worthy of its place in the franchise canon.  Fans of the Trek universe deserve nothing less.  But in order to do this, there needs to be an availability of funds to cover the cost of production goods and services, all of which are necessary to complete the film without compromising its value or integrity along the way. So, where is your money going?

The money will first go to Kickstarter and Amazon Payment Services. Approximately 10% of the total funds raised will go to the fees charged by Kickstarter and Amazon. From there, another 10% can be set aside for the rewards. Finally, there are invariably some pledges that will not come through; the average drop-out rate for pledges that don't get paid is approximately 5%. This means that at the end of the day, we see approximately 75% of the total money donated.

After that, where are we going to put that 75%?

Your generous donation helps fund the production of this film through the provision of the following goods and services (among countless others that go into a production of this scale):

  • Computer Storage: Horizon is a modern production with high production values. Shot entirely in the realm of digital cinema, the storage and maintenance of large and heavy reels of filmstock will never be a problem for us. That said, Horizon is shot in digital “raw” camera format, which simply means that the files we’re working with are huge! We literally don’t have enough space on our computers to hold all of the footage. Increasing our digital storage capacity is an absolute must. ($2,500 minimum.)
  • Computer Software:  In keeping with our high production values, we need to purchase additional visual effects software licenses in order to complete all of the shots in the film to the high standard we have set. Production-quality CGI (computer generated imagery) software is costly, but well worth every penny. ($500 minimum.)
  • Camera Equipment:  In addition to things such as props, computer storage, and software, we also need to purchase and build additional equipment to aid in filming. One piece of equipment, detailed in the video, is a platform that will allow us to rotate actors in front of the green screen, rather than rotating the camera. ($500 minimum.)
  • Costuming and Props:  The out-of-pocket cost of creating the ten already-completed Starfleet jumpsuits has been very high. Additional costumes and props, including Romulan uniforms, weapons, and props, are costly to produce and time-intensive; it’s not simply a cost in fabric or sewing supplies. Romulan uniforms will include various molded prop pieces, such as helmets and armor. ($2,000 minimum.)
  • Computer Upgrades:  One of the most important aspects of being able to create a high quality sci-fi feature film is having the computer processing power to handle the work. By the very nature of this project, the work is much more involved than simply splicing footage together. Computer upgrades will allow a much more efficient and high-quality workflow in order to achieve the best possible results. ($1,000 minimum.)
  • Network Rendering Services:  After all of the work has been completed, there is one final stage to go through: rendering. This final stage in putting visual effects shots together is incredibly time-consuming. Even short shots that are only a few seconds long can take up to 300 hours or more to render on a normal computer. Having the ability to purchase network rendering services in order to render the most complex shots would be an incredible boon to our production. It can reduce a 300-hour render down to a few hours, but it’s not cheap. ($1,500 minimum.)
  • Cast/Crew Compensation:  Last, but most certainly not least, are cast and crew expenses. We’re all in this for the love of the work, but being able to compensate our incredibly talented cast and crew for their hard work, travel time, and expenses is crucial to creating the best film possible. Most cast and crew members live two hours away from the primary shooting locations; not to mention, shooting days can be incredibly long and tiring. Reimbursing them for their time and travel, and providing proper craft services, is nothing short of a necessity. ($2,000 minimum.)

Simply put:  We can't do this without you!

BACKER REWARDS

So, after reading about the film, watching the videos at the top of this page, and learning more about what's needed to get it done, you may be wondering what's in it for you?  Why would you want to donate even a dime of your hard-earned money to this project?  We hope it's because you like what you've seen, you believe in us, and you want to play a part in watching this project come to fruition.  And for that, we can't thank you enough.  To express our gratitude, we've put together some awesome backer rewards.  We've broken them down by pledge tiers, to make it easy for you to select which rewards you'd like to receive.  And even if you don't want a reward in return...well, there's an option for that too.

From a "thank you" on our official Facebook page to a custom-made Starfleet jumpsuit, we think there's a reward that will appeal to just about everyone, whether you're a self-described "Trekkie" or not.  You could even get credited as an Associate Producer or as an Executive Producer in the film credits and on our IMDb page.

Above all, we want you to know that we appreciate your interest in our project, and we hope to be able to share our success with you!

STRETCH GOALS

Now that we have surpassed our initial funding goal of $10,000, we'd like to show our appreciation to our backers by unlocking additional rewards once specific increased funding levels are reached. Reaching these goals will allow us to go beyond the bare minimum that we need and really take things to the next level.

$15,000 STRETCH GOAL (UNLOCKED):  All backers who donated $10 or more will receive one custom-made Admiral-level rank insignia pin. Passing this stretch goal will allow us to fully fund the film in terms of additional props and costumes that we otherwise would not be able to create. This money will go to fabricating original props such as helmets and body armor for Romulan soldiers.

Measurements and 3D rendering. Prop will be 3D printed and painted.

$20,000 STRETCH GOAL (UNLOCKED):  All backers who donated $10 or more will receive one futuristic Romulan Star Empire uniform patch. Passing this stretch goal will allow us to fully upgrade our computer systems and software licenses the way we need to in order to get the film out quickly and in a very high quality. With our budget of $10,000, it's possible to complete the film, but this additional money will allow us to drastically reduce rendering and production times due to enhanced computer speeds and more up-to-date software, thus getting the film to all of you much sooner. This goal will also allow us to purchase all of the additional camera equipment that we need as well, such as a motion control rig that will enable us to film shots with a repeatable camera movement, thus allowing much more complex shots to be created.

$25,000 STRETCH GOAL:  All backers who donated $10 or more will receive one high-quality, matte-finished 11x17 Horizon poster. If we pass this stretch goal, we'd like to reach out to Scott Bakula, Connor Trinneer, and Gary Graham to help make this a fan film truly worth of its place in Enterprise canon.

IF OUR STRETCH GOALS ARE MET:

  • For backers who have chosen a pledge tier which includes a physical reward (DVD, Blu-ray, patch, jumpsuit, etc.):  Shipping cost is factored into the pledge for each tier.  No additional shipping cost will be required, since your stretch goal reward(s) will be shipped with your initial reward.
  • For backers who have chosen a pledge tier which does not include a physical reward:  Because stretch goal rewards will need to be shipped to you, we ask that you please include an additional $5 domestic shipping fee ($15 international shipping fee) to your original donation if you would like to receive a stretch goal reward by mail.

From Alec Peters, Executive Producer and Writer of Star Trek: Axanar -- "Tommy is an amazing filmmaker who is doing what no other similar project is doing, because he is doing almost everything himself, even sewing the costumes! I have jumped on board to help Tommy and asked him to join the Star Trek: Axanar team because I think so highly of him."

Risks and challenges

When embarking on any new project requiring time, energy, and various types of resources, risks and challenges come with the territory. Filmmaking is no different. In the case of Horizon, these risks and challenges include delays due to weather, family emergencies, cast/crew illness, location availability, issues with equipment, and the like. In the face of these challenges, the cast and crew have risen to the occasion, and have put forth their best efforts to keep this project on track. As dedicated visual storytellers, each of us has looked these challenges in the face, and made a conscious decision to overcome the obstacles created by each. We know the final product will be worth every ounce of struggle we have endured to bring it to life.
