FULL SPEAKER LIST ANNOUNCED
As if you needed any convincing that Starship Congress 2017 is the space conference to attend this year, take a look at the complete list of speakers this year in Monterey:
Alice Qannik Glenn
Juan José Díaz Infante
Leah Alissa Bayer
STARSHIP CONGRESS–The Most Forward Thinking Space Science Conference on Earth
Icarus Interstellar has made it our mission to remake space science conferences by way of example. From making accommodation for hearing, sight, and physical disabilities; to strategic relations with LGBTQ community organizations; to insuring children of 1st Nation, Black, Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander, Caribbean, South American, African as well as all global, economic, and cultural backgrounds are inspired and empowered to imagine their place in our civilization's space future, Icarus Interstellar is building a foundation of actual work and investment in accessibility–one Starship Congress at a time.
Let Go of The Past, Look to the Future
With Starship Congress 2017, this is our 3rd Starship Congress Kickstarter campaign. Both 2013 and 2105 were solid successes.
Now in 2017, we are upping the ante for Starship Congress. First of all, since 2015, we have formed a strategic alliance with space science Kickstarter and merchandisers Chop Shop to handle fulfillment of good and rewards. Besides successfully staging a number of very successful Kickstarter campaigns of their own, Chop Shop is a brilliant design partner.
And second of all, based on our takeaways over the past four years of two summit-style space conferences, we are moving Starship Congress to a new permanent home. Starship Congress is moving to Monterey, California.
Between the sheer number of West Coast-based Charters Members and contributors to Icarus Interstellar who hedged for a California-based Starship Congress, the support for the audacity of interstellar space exploration by science and arts professionals who call California "home", and the matching pro-science/pro-society standards we saw in the State of California (and, frankly, to the stunning natural setting and geographic convenience of Monterey), it just made sense to make Monterey, CA, the new home to Starship Congress.
Which brings us to accessibility. There is no other way to put it than this: Unless space is for everybody then space is for nobody. Humanity cannot move to space without societal buy-in. Therefore, space exploration represents a much broader observation of goals worth pursuing and uniting people behind common goals. In terms of allotting resources for, making commitment to, and generating interest in space exploration, reality demands accessibility. Without accessibility, space exploration as an exclusive resource is a fantasy. Space exploration which is not inclusive cannot function or succeed.
This is why inclusion, diversity, and equity bring everything into play. Accessibility is a determinator–it reduces all obstacles to zero. When society puts its collective aim towards any goal, no matter how audacious or far-sighted, that goal is achieved.
Space is for Everybody
The fact of the matter is that the best parties are the ones where everybody shows up. Which is why the theme for this year's Starship Congress is Space is for Everybody. Teacher-Astronaut Christa McAuliffe most famously declared, "Space is for everybody. It's not just for a few people in science or math, or for a select group of astronauts. That's our new frontier out there, and it's everybody's business to know about space." In terms of backgrounds, ideologies, professions, and cultures, the speakers at Starship Congress 2017 reflects McAuliffe's observation.

One more thing. For Starship Congress 2017, Icarus Interstellar has a special guest.
Theoretical physicist Miguel Alcubierre, creator of the Alcubierre drive.
Rarely has a single individual's work done as much to impact and make real the possibility of one day traveling the universe as that of Miguel Alcubierre.
To quote Alan Shapiro: "[Alcubierre's] paper has been hailed by many as a landmark in the transition from warp drive being “merely fictional” to being a real scientific topic. Alcubierre’s scheme violates no known physical laws, and provides a valid mathematical description and metric, based on hyperbolic tangent functions, of the precise curvature of space that would permit round-trip travel between two locations separated by light-years in an arbitrarily short time."
(And in OTHER words, namely those of none other than William "Captain Kirk" Shatner, "Brilliant! Alcubierre's theoretical ship means you can travel across the galaxy in a reasonable period of time without trashing Einstein's equations…"
Dr Alcubierre resides in Mexico City, Mexico, where he teaches at National Autonomous University of Mexico. He rarely speaks publicly on faster-than-light (FTL) travel, warp mechanics, or his now-legendary paper "The Warp Drive: Hyper-fast travel within general relativity". For this reason, attendees at Starship Congress 2017 will share a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet Dr Alcubierre face-to-face, hear him speak on his famous work, and even ask questions. Icarus Interstellar is honored to being hosting Dr Miguel Alcubierre at Starship Congress 2017.
What Does the Moon mean to Interstellar?
But wait there's more! Realizing interstellar space exploration is far more than sociological–without good science we are staying home, without good art there's no reason to leave–Icarus Interstellar is flexing its organization's collective muscle in posing this amazing conceptual question to the presenters and attendees of Starship Congress 2017:
"What does the Moon mean to Interstellar space exploration?"
In the very least, as a thought exercise the premise of an interstellar achievement demands fantastic allocation of resources. We cannot overlook any to get from here to there. And aside from Earth itself, the nearest and most comprehensive collection of space resources is the Moon.
How can the moon best be put into play as an asset for interstellar space exploration? At Starship Congress 2017, the Moon is given respect as the next most practical stepping stone to getting something from earth to another solar system.
Building a Starship, Together
2017 marks Icarus Interstellar's third Kickstarter campaign for interstellar space science summit, Starship Congress. Starship Congress 2013 and 2105 were both successes in terms of Kickstarter funding, attendance, and events. Between the first two Starship Congresses we had over 500 attendees and over 50 presenters discussing the most exciting challenge humankind will ever face: Building a Starship, together.
We ask for your support of our Kickstarter for–and hope you will attend–Starship Congress 2017. Thank you.
Risks and challenges
Again, associated risks are minimal, as Starship Congress 2017 is taking place in early-August in Monterey, CA. Speakers are booked. Conference center is reserved. Reaching our fund-raising goal allows for this technical summit to be better marketed, and professionally presented and documented. Icarus Interstellar wishes to make as much knowledge surrounding interstellar spaceflight and exploration as publicly available and as accessible as possible.
IMPORTANT NOTE: As Icarus Interstellar is a non-profit organization, 95% of backing is tax deductible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
