À propos

Imagine being able to control our telescopes to explore the sky in both hemispheres from the comfort of your living room. Go from the heart of the Milky Way to the Clouds of Magellan, sail by the sun and past the planets of our solar system.

Stargazers is a project dedicated to making astronomy and astrophotography available to everyone. We plan to create a network of high-grade telescopes around the world and let you steer them in the easiest and most natural way: from the tip of your fingers.

Last news !!

We are pleased to announce that everything is almost ready to build our first site.

To celebrate this milestone, we are honored to offer to all Kickstarter backers an exclusive lifetime access to this R&D site. Only you will have the opportunity to book for free this site while it will not be in use by our technical team.

Would you like to know more? check news N°5

Contemplating the sky is always wonderful and stress-free. The view gives us an insight into the world in which we live. Throughout the ages, the sky has always inspired humanity.

Stargazing doesn’t require much to start with. The first instrument can be your bare eyes, except if you’re living in a city with so much light pollution that the stars are barely visible, or if your weather is not cooperating.

With Stargazers App, you are no longer limited by local conditions. Select one of our international sites, and then watch live-streaming video from its telescope. No matter the time of day or the weather!

If you want to get more involved in astronomy, add binoculars or even a telescope to your explorations. You can also add a camera for more details and deeper sky observations.

We encourage you to join an astronomy group near your home. They’ll help you improve your skills. Imagine getting to share your love of the stars with others! We encourage you to share your explorations! You can instantly upload photos from our Stargazers App to your favorite form of social media.

With Stargazers App, you will add to your starwatching skills. Because our telescopes are in different hemispheres, you can see and show sky wonders at any time. Just travel instantly to the other side of the planet to contemplate the skies.

With the Stargazer App, you can book time on a remote observatory. Each 12-inch diameter telescope is fully equipped with a high-end digital camera for astrophotography and assisted with an 80mm apochromatic refractor. Our system is also equipped with a cooled camera. This hardware is under your control on your remote device, such as a tablet, from Stargazers App.

Our goal is to create a seamless system that is as natural and easy to use as possible. Use our star map to find a feature or point to a location and click. Our telescope will automatically move to this position. Our cameras are ready to take photographs at your discretion. You can also choose a space object from a pre-programmed list, such as a nebula, our sun (during daytime), or a planet. Our telescope will move automatically into the selected position. You can also just use the camera feedback and point to a location or use our directional pad to change your target.

All the complex technology is hidden behind the scenes and maintained by a team of experts!

 The Stargazers App Journey

 The Genesis of Stargazer

In 2014, Philippe Lopes Pinto, Stargazer App’s Co-Founder & Chief Executive, invited friends to dinner. One of his friend’s daughters saw his telescope and asked if she could look through it. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t cooperating. Philippe met up again with his friends few months later, but this time, it was too late for the girl to observe the sky. It occurred to Philippe to build a set of telescopes worldwide so people could observe the sky no matter their location or time zone.

 The Proof of Concept

The first step of developing the Stargazer App was to enumerate what our solution was supposed to do. We then needed to see if our idea would work on any device, like a tablet or smartphone. Our critical steps on this qualitative approach were:

  • Capturing, editing, and streaming a video from a specialized camera.
  • Steering a telescope using a high-grade mount directly from a tablet.
  • Managing the power supply and equipment status.
  • Preserving the local environment. If possible, we pick sites located in isolated places away from city lights and pollution. Astronomers care about the health of their observation places. As a result, we rely on solar panels and batteries anywhere there is no available electrical grid.
  • Having enough bandwidth to meet our needs.
  • Implementing fully automated behavior of the hardware and software to preserve the site’s integrity. For instance, in case of bad weather conditions, the dome should be able to shut itself down.  Integrating all electronic equipment with our own software so we can handle every unexpected situation, without being limited by manufacturer’s software. This means that, unlike most remote solutions for personal use, we do not rely on stacking existing software. We have built our own complete solution from scratch.
  • Making our solution available remotely with limited latencies (time lags).

Our plan required that every single step described above had to be successfully tested. Otherwise, the project would have stopped immediately. Using separate software, we have tested every component.

All the hardware, such as our cameras and mounts must have an exposed API or driver so that we could create our own software from scratch.

We’ve also tested the video streams captured from several cameras. We ensured that we could combine the different videos and restream them to your mobile device.

Finally, we also tested automated aspects to help us choose which platform was best fitted to our needs. According to these tests, we can use both a microcontroller and an embedded computer. This will allow us to use each to its best advantage.

A Well-Advanced UI App

The user interface (UI) has been designed to be as friendly as possible. Every command is easily accessible, and as understandable as possible for ages 9 to 99. It is “fluent” which means every action is accessible with minimum steps. Our goal is to make astronomy accessible to everyone so no prior knowledge of astronomy is required. If you can point and touch, you can use this system. More experienced astronomers will be able to focus on observations and retrieve session files for post-treatment.

This video shows you how to use an iPad to select an observatory site using Stargazer App and get quick information. The video was captured in real time on a 9.7” iPad Pro.

Our First Observatory Sites: Australia and Europe

For astronomy observations, time lag is crucial! This is particularly true when we decided to offer daytime steering. That’s why we’ve selected remote sites in Australia and Europe.

In Australia, you can marvel at the southern sky within the heart of the Milky Way. This location is located three and a half hours from Melbourne in Victoria State. It is in a remote area far from light pollution. Our host and caretaker is very involved in astronomy. This enthusiast will take care of our installation. He already has two domes installed! We will be completely autonomous with solar panels and 4G for communications.

In Europe, we opted for the Saint-Véran site, an observatory built in the mid-60s in Provence (France). Saint-Véran is a unique and fantastic location far away from light pollution. The observatory is located at 2940m (9,650 feet) and offers a very pure and dark sky. This observatory is already well known and valued by the astronomy community. We are very proud to be able to make it available for you, soon.

The people of Saint-Véran are very enthusiastic about the project and love the idea of sharing their beautiful sky with the rest of the world.

 Stargazers App plans

 Why Kickstarter?

Kickstarter is a way to raise capital through donations. Through Kickstarter, we won’t lose company control as we might through investors. Kickstarter donors will help us complete our minimum requirements before we launch the Stargazers App. Funds will help us complete both iOS and Android applications for tablets and our first telescope site.

We’ve already started or completed parts of our Stargazer.Space project. We will offer ten observation sites worldwide. Each takes time to get local authorizations, so we have lined up these sites already. As a result, we know we have the best possible sites for very dark skies for the highest quality of astronomical viewing.

Each site requires individualized testing and modification of both software and hardware. We are working to ensure that each site will respond to specific weather and power challenges.

The core R&D parts of our project are completed. Our next goal is to create infrastructure and the tools that you, our supporter, needs. We wrote software for iOS first, but we expect make it available for Android, as well. To achieve this, we must port the software to Android devices.

Our back-office uses Microsoft Azure as the backbone of the infrastructure. All our databases, websites, web services, and application logging will be seamlessly hosted on Azure.

We already have the telescopes, cameras, and supporting hardware. All we need for this part of the project are a 32 sqft (3m2) dome and solar panels.

Thanks to your support, our first site will be ready to take you to the stars. Future sites are ready to be completed and added to our system as our funding continues.

What Happens with Any Extra Contributions?

Our initial campaign will complete our first installations in Australia and France. The complete Stargazers App project will host ten telescopes installed across the world. It is the minimum infrastructure that will allow anyone, anywhere, access to the whole sky surrounding the earth at any time... as promised!

We want ten telescopes not only for complete sky viewing but to keep as many telescopes up and functioning despite locally bad weather or maintenance. We also want to ensure that there are enough telescopes for every subscriber to have convenient steering sessions. Eventually, we plan to add extra telescopes to each site.

Each site costs between $80,000 and $140,000. Extra contributions will help us bring our dream to fruition that much sooner.

Risques et défis

Since our telescopes are used remotely, they must be autonomous. Our challenge is to identify external risk factors and allow our telescopes to react immediately to an unexpected event.

The Weather Station. It is critical to have weather sensors that can trigger a security mode immediately, without waiting for a remote administrator to react.
We cannot afford to have network disruptions that compromise site security.
We’ve identified and planned for many contingencies. These include extreme temperatures, wind conditions, snow, and rain. We’ve also planned for animal intrusions (like snakes and weasels), faulty power detection, and hardware halting that requires a reboot.

The Internet. Internet access with a wide-enough bandwidth is essential to stream videos. Internet access is more complex. In some areas, we will use satellite communications. On other areas, we rely on mobile 4G or even radio communications. Our systems are adaptable, thanks to being written by our team.

Power Supply. Our systems be hooked into the power grid and can also use solar panels and batteries.

We also plan to implement redundant solutions to switch from one server to another in case of hardware/software break down. We want as little downtime as possible.

The Hardware. Before creating our own hardware, we looked for existing solutions. Since we could not find what we needed, we designed our own. For instance, existing weather stations did not meet our requirements for power supply, communication, or API for programming.

Solar Filter. Another critical aspect was the solar filter. This is mandatory for daytime solar observations. We created our own retractable system. The solar filter activates itself during the day and removes itself at night. Another factor, absolutely critical to preserving our telescopes, is heat deformation. The solar shields will protect our telescope main tube from the intense heat of the sun.

Auto Aligning. The ability of the system to auto align the finder with the main tube using stars as references is critical. Again, we have created our own software so that the process is seamless.

Hiding Complexity. Ours is a very complex system. Our user interface is easy enough for anyone to use. Hiding that complexity was possibly the biggest challenge of all our challenges.
