ENGLISH

Stardust, a small record shop and café in the heart of Aarhus, is launching a crowdfunding project aimed at releasing a record with a local jazz quartet. The hope is, over time, to put out a number of records by local artists.

About Stardust

Stardust has existed as a record shop and café for almost five years. The store offers new and secondhand vinyl records (mainly rock, pop and jazz), record players to go with these and music books in Danish and English. We enjoy to see our visiting customers become regulars, as they time and again make their way by Stardust, to check out the latest releases and enjoy a cup of freshly brewed, organic coffee. Several times each month our café is rearranged, and comes to function as a small concert venue: these are intimate musical events with aspiring and established artists of local, national and international origin. Entry is always free. Many interesting artists have dropped by, equipped only with their debut album, an instrumental weapon of choice and a racing heartbeat.

Stardust strives to support especially our local artists: this is done by providing a space for them to present their work live in concert, as well as by promoting and selling their releases through our shop in Klostergade, and on our web shop. For the first time we are now collaborating with a local band, working towards the release of our very own record; this will hopefully be the starting point for similar releases, with different artists, once every one or two years. This project, as a collaboration between Stardust and the artists being released, and funded through crowdfunding, is at the same time aimed at preserving Aarhus’ most “hyggelige” (<- a unique Danish word connoting cosiness and warmth of heart) record shop, and its importance to the local underground scene, be it rock, pop, jazz or any other genre of music.

On the project

In keeping with tradition, the jazz quartet Vuust, Kjær, Madsen, Windfeld played two exclusive concerts at Stardust during the annual Jazz-festival in Aarhus. The concerts were recorded by the band, with a view to a record release. At some point down the road the band members decided to hand over the recordings to Stardust, free of charge; the idea of releasing the record as a crowdfunded project took shape in collaboration, and eventually grew in scale as to include yearly “live in concert” releases from Stardust.

The grand idea comprises a series of record releases with local artists, in which the concert with Vuust, Kjær, Madsen, Windfeld is to be the first. As to what made the four jazz musicians simply hand the concert recordings over to café Stardust, drummer of the quartet Christian Windfeld explains:

Because we know that places like Stardust, which attach importance to artistic quality, don’t earn their money easily in these days, we have decided to donate the music to them. In this way, we can work together to stir up some attention to this place through a crowdfunding campaign. It’s important to us that Stardust exists as a concert venue, a meeting point for musicians and music lovers, as a specialty shop with knowledge on particular and peculiar releases on vinyl, cd and in book form, but most importantly as a showroom for our own music. Stardust has become a unifying factor, an umbrella under which the often self-released music can gather. It carries a great value for the artists of the city that customers from home and abroad can begin their search for local music through Stardust

The four musicians perform in this particular constellation, exclusively at Stardust during the annual Jazz Festival; this in itself marks this live recording as unique, and we firmly believe that the record will become a collector’s item!

Is an LP including download.
