About

T.E.R.R.A. is an FPS (First Person Shooter) team-based game with RTS (Real Time Strategy) set in the near future against the background of the Solar System. Terraforming is the key to Humanity's survival after a deadly World War 3 decades previously and the focus of changing the Galilean moons of Jupiter to habitable zones. 

T.E.R.R.A.is a short name of the full title:Terra Extra-terrestrial Rapid Response Assault

The game has been Greenlit on Steam Greenlight for full global release on the Steam Platform. To get the game over the line, we need your help here on Kickstarter to make it happen. 

Gameplay

The unique highlight of the game is the ability to swap instantly between FPS and RTS at anytime, anywhere. This brings with a press of a button a whole new level of game-play swapping at will between FPS/RTS. T.E.R.R.A. brings is a fresh approach to both genre's while maintaining the important game-play experiences of both. At the core of the game it is an FPS game with strong RTS parts - fast and fluid gaming.

Multiplayer: Various game type modes to choose from such as DeathmatchCTFEscapeConquest, Arena and the headline mode: Formations

In Formations, teams must build Generators at various points of either end of the map until teams reach the middle and start to capture enemy Generators. Each Generator protects the team with health saving atmosphere where leaving this sphere of protection against the backdrop of the solar winds on the moons will cause you to lose health. This mode starts off with building and expanding with sneak attacks to a tug of war to capture enough Generators to reach the enemy base. 

The Escape mode is team-based again but with only two teams involved with everyone starting as Humans until a random player is infected with Alien DNA, transforming into the alien Maraud creature. Maraud players must infect (no weapons) the rest of the Humans escaping and the Humans must survive to the end in order to win or be overtaken by the Maraud aliens. We have a few other twists in this mode to enhance the Escape. Teamwork is vital.

Conquest is a game-play mode involving tactical decisions to capture various points on a map and secure key bases. At any point the other team can take over another area which you must reclaim in order to win Conquest. A force brute attack on all points will not win this mode, your team needs a balance of different skills to win. Conquest involves generation of various extra buildings with strong RTS game-play. Use your resources well for your team.  

In Arena mode you’re playing in RTS game-play only, unlike all the rest. Four teams battle it out to wipe out each other with auto-spawning units. Let your army build up and attack other teams. Earn resources with each kill and upgrade your units. Different units will provide counter attacks to others and to win you must destroy the enemy base. 

Deathmatch & CTF is what you would expect of these modes and without any RTS game-play involved. At the heart of T.E.R.R.A. is a First Player Shooter game. Deathmatch is a team-based competitive mode with small to medium size maps and CTF uses the larger outdoor maps. We do not overlook the importance of having a strong FPS game with balanced weapons & game-play. We are making T.E.R.R.A. stand out as a solid FPS game as it is with the other genre merging modes. 

Story

Terraforming is the key to Humanity's survival after a deadly World War 3 decades previously and the focus of changing the Galilean moons of Jupiter to habitable zones. The four main moons known as the Galilean moons discovered in 1610 by Galileo Galilei, have become man's last hope to relocate the population over after an outbreak on Earth, which has followed to Mars afterwards. 

Each moon is at a different phase of the terraforming cycle when the game starts and we all discover a horrible truth that we are not alone. An alien species called The Maraud have appeared out of nowhere on the moons, the battle for the Solar System has begun. However there has been whispers in the wind as the story develops that The Maraud might not be as alien as we all think..

The Concept of Instant FPS / RTS

This an FPS game first and foremost, fast play, competitive and team-based. Jump into any multiplayer map and start kicking butt. A range of weapons to use, vehicles to help break or scout upcoming attacks and co-op game-play that you are part of an team battling the enemy. As an FPS player you know the deal here, but with RTS thrown in - your team can help build up resources to buy more powerful weapons or attacking with their Droids before you break the enemies defence. Even if RTS is not your game, we have made the RTS very easy to use to assist the FPS player and not to get in its way or slow the game down.

Key to RTS mode is not to slow down the FPS game-play with micro-management. We are keeping the core features of an RTS intact that works smoothly with an FPS game. Spawn Droids, mine Minerals or get kills for income and construct Generators. Improve the Droid's abilities as they act as your warriors as well workers. Every Player can enter RTS. 

Players can use the instant FPS to RTS for creative and tactical game-play across the different modes of the game. In RTS you can only look around the map a short distance from your player character. Your player character is vulnerable to attack while you’re in RTS as it’s frozen at the point of entering RTS. T.E.R.R.A. from early versions of the game to the current one is a lot of fun with the instant FPS/RTS - it plays smoothly and with large teams it gets insane!

The Worlds

The TERRA Worlds / Maps are spread across various moons in the Solar System, terraforming into different types of landscapes. In total the completed game will end up having at least 35 very different maps of various scale & size. Some maps are small for fast FPS action, mixtures of outdoor and indoor with the largest maps spanning vast distances (this is where your vehicles come into play!). 

Dynamic day / night changes along with dynamic landscape changes appearing with planting Generators or capturing them in the Formations mode. We see the worlds as a player character and the world changes your game-play unexpectedly so every time you play - it's always fresh.

Concept Art & History

TERRA has been in active development and in-active for the last few years. As an Indie studio it can be challenging to develop out a major title and in the last year we have been going full steam with the development to getting it over the line to a finished title. 

The game has jumped across an few game engines during this time as gaming technology improved to where we are now on the Unity Game Engine. With a long time of the game on different engines & versions, it's actually worked out well for the game as we have been able to test various ideas out and throw out parts are seemed cool but didn't work right. In the end we are trying to keep the game as simple as possible but packed with quality features that is fun to play. 

Most of the artwork you see in the screenshots and video dates back a number of years as well. We are focusing on the game-play, making sure the game rocks and then we will give a long overdue upgrade to the visuals of the game. If you like the look of TERRA already, that's great as it is going to get even better in quality & effects - by a mile!

As an indie title funded by ourselves, it takes time and while today the team is a small number of people activity involved - we hope you will support our Kickstarter Campaign

The Release

The funding of this campaign will allow the game to be finished and in good timing. We expect to release this game by March 2015 to all backers first. By April we expect the Global Release on the Steam Platform to the public. 

The proceeds of the funds here will be used to cover the art assets upgrades (they really need a new lick of paint!), the new game modes we have mentioned above to be finished off in full and along with advancements to the AI (vital to the RTS side). We get to spend more time on the game, hire in expects on certain parts (this is a small team!) such as AI mentioned, extra Artwork and get this game finished. 

The people behind TERRA have worked on various PC and Console game titles since 1994 up to present day. In total about 30+ games under the belt. We know what we are doing and the scale of TERRA is why it's taken so long to get to this point and now that we are here, we are close to finishing all major parts of the game but an little help from your support to this campaign will mean an big boost to team moral and completing it in the near future.

Kickstarter Funding

TERRA continues to be funded by ourselves and we are matching the funding here as it would be unrealistic to complete such a title on the small amount here. If this campaign exceeds the amount, we will be able to offer the following campaign stage targets:

1. €50,000 funded: Mac / Linux Releases and introduction of the 3rd Race to the game (including the Humans & Maraud already there).

2. €100,000 funded: Single Player Campaign Mode added with strong storytelling, cut-scenes and 15 missions. As we are an Irish (Ireland) studio, we are pretty good at storytelling and creativity! Telling the story of TERRA is where we want to go, introduce you and capture your imagination with characters, their backgrounds and the world around them.

3. €250,000 funded: Ports of the game to consoles (Xbox One + PlayStation 4). We will tailor and adjust the game for Consoles. Parts of the game would work different but the core will remain the same. This is to make sure the console versions work for console game-play compared to the PC/Mac/Linux game-play. The PC / Mac / Linux version will get a small expansion pack to boot.

Play TERRA

We have planned a private multi-player battle for Christmas (shortly after this campaign is over). This is to test out 20 vs. 20 players in one or two modes of the Demo we will give out. 

So if you can't wait for the finished game, we will give you the demo at Christmas. In order to gain access to the demo list you will need to select one of the Rewards in this Campaign. Experience the sheer joy and excitement of playing TERRA in FPS & RTS. 

After this event, we will take on board your thoughts for improvements in the game-play and balance it out further for release. We will likely do another major battle event before the release with all the new features working well and once again you will get access to this before anyone else. 

Risks and challenges

Making games is a difficult process filled with unknowns. Lots can go wrong. We’re a small team and it will still be possible to fail, even if we are successfully funded on Kickstarter. This is true of every small to major games title (PC or Consoles) be it with backers or publishers - things can go wrong.

- Team, Everyone on our team is necessary but if something happens with one person for any unforeseen reason, this could cause an delay as we replace that person.

- Technical: usually games can present enormous technical challenges. This is a low risk for us, as we’re using the Unity Games Engine, an engine that we are all very experienced with.

- Design: Making games involves taking design risks, and they don’t always pan out. The team can lose time correcting those choices that don’t end up working as well in practice as we imagined they would. Thankfully we have had plenty of time during the rebuilds to test and get over the major humps involved - but there still maybe one or two more yet.

- Project: Completing the game and on time is the biggest issue overall for us and for anyone developing an big title. We are lucky to have such an good engine like Unity that takes away many risks and speeds up development. As well we are highly experienced for (dare I say it), 20 years of games development - but not everyone in the team has this, however having some veterans certainly helps to avoid rookie mistakes.
