It might seem paradoxical, but I got into the beef business because I love cattle. It is my mission to keep livestock out of feedlots and to promote the humane treatment of the animals that provide our food. Soon after moving to Wyoming, I met a cowboy and started helping him with his cows. We've been working together ever since, and I started Star Brand Beef in 2010.
Our cattle are calm and gentle around us because we are calm and gentle around them. We always employ low-stress handling techniques when working with our cattle and keep our mother cows for their entire lives, caring for them as they reach old age rather than selling them into The System when they stop having calves.
I provide pastured, grass-finished, humanely-raised beef to those who eat meat. Our stewardship - of the animals and the land - results in beef that is extremely healthy, and exceptionally tender and flavorful. Star Brand Beef is organically raised, always pastured, free from GMOs and antibiotics, exclusively grass-fed, and grass-finished.
WHY THIS KICKSTARTER?
A reefer trailer is a freezer on wheels: safe, reliable, with a refrigeration system that will keep temperatures to -10ºF during deliveries. It works just like the box on the reefer trucks I’ve rented for the past four years, and I will pull it behind my F250.
With my own reefer trailer, I can expand my delivery area and offer more delivery routes each year. Having my own trailer will allow greater flexibility for my customers and for me, and will eliminate the massive stress associated with renting reefer trucks from Montana and Colorado.
A reefer trailer, and the subsequent delivery expansion, will also allow other like-minded ranchers to collaborate with Star Brand Beef and sell directly to customers. I currently have two other ranchers working with me, providing pastured, grass-finished, humanely-raised mini beef and lamb. Working with other ranchers supports their autonomy and stewardship, and helps change the status quo locally and industry-wide.
In exchange for your support, I offer my gratitude, along with special edition products I have never offered before. Please see the reward descriptions in the sidebar on the right for more details on each reward.
Pictured here is Grandma, who lived to age 21. We keep our mother cows for their entire lives, caring for them as they reach old age rather than selling them into The System when they stop having calves. We also keep a menagerie of “special project” cattle who need extra help. And you know what? They each take on valuable roles within the herd. This isn’t a “cost efficient” way to run a ranch, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.
All beef starts out grass-fed. If beef is labeled ‘grass fed,’ it is true, but unless it is labeled ‘grass-finished,’ it was also fed grain, usually corn or soy. When cattle eat a 100% grass diet, as they are meant to, this is called grass-finished. The meat is leaner and more flavorful, and the fat is the good kind: high in omega 3s, including EPA and DHA. Grass-finished beef is much healthier for the cattle, for the customer, and for the environment.
Grass finished beef from animals that are protected from stress is extremely tender. I take that one step further and have my processor (USDA-certified, independently-owned, run by a compassionate and competent woman) dry age the meat for two full weeks before it is cut and packaged. Taking this extra step results in beef that is exceptionally tender and flavorful.
We buy grass hay from farmers who use composted manure to fertilize their fields instead of chemical fertilizers, and lease thousand-acre parcels of pasture land which has never been tainted by chemical fertilizers. Year-round, our cattle drink pure, fresh water from artesian wells and natural springs.
FREE FROM GMOs & ANTIBIOTICS
My cattle have never been fed corn, soy, sugar beet by-products, pellets, or any GMOs. Thanks to our free-range, low-stress methods and practices, these animals have been free from illness and have never been treated with antibiotics.
CUSTOM CUT AND PACKAGED
Star Brand Beef is available in mini beef, quarter beef, half beef, and whole beef orders. It arrives packaged in individual portions and cuts - mini and quarter orders come with a variety of choice standard cuts, and half and whole beef orders may be fully customized.
The beef is first wrapped in high quality plastic wrap and then in high quality butcher paper – this combo gives it excellent protection for long term freezer storage, far superior, in my experience, to vacuum sealing. Even if stored for a full year, your beef will remain untouched by freezer burn or compromise of any sort.
ORDERING & DELIVERY
Star Brand Beef is available for purchase once a year, in the spring, with delivery taking place each summer (generally, throughout August). Star Brand Beef delivery is done co-op style, which keeps delivery efficient and gives us all a chance to meet and chat. Customers meet the delivery truck at a central location during a 1 to 3 hour window to pick up their beef. Specific times and locations are emailed to customers after ordering.
“I have to say, this beef is incredible tasting. And this whole process has made me much more conscious of the meat industry.”
"The beef is UNREAL. I grilled up some New York steaks and could cut them with a butter knife. I have never tasted beef like this. Ever. Bravo.”
“Been to some high end steak houses but this was THE best steak I’ve ever had. Seasoned with salt and pepper only. Wow.”
“We have been buying sides [of beef] for a long time and this is the best ever.”
“Star Brand Beef is what a hamburger is all about. Spouse says it’s the only beef he’ll eat from now on.”
“We grilled up a package of hamburger on Saturday night. It was unbelievable! It makes you wonder how it’s possible that we’ve been duped for so long into eating the tasteless stuff in grocery stores. I’ve been so thrilled with this whole experience.”
Risks and challenges
This isn’t my first rodeo. I’ve been delivering quality beef to rave reviews and repeat customers since 2012. This will be my fifth year of deliveries. I have proven my dedication and reliability, and the exceptional quality of Star Brand Beef. I truly consider this a labor of love.
Additionally, I’ve had a thriving online retail shop since 2007. After nearly ten years in business, I am experienced in production, quality control, and speedy shipping. All Kickstarter rewards, excluding beef deliveries, will ship no later than 45 days from the Kickstarter closing date, with the majority of rewards shipping much sooner. At that point, tracking numbers will be emailed directly to you.
