Originally written for Labyrinth Lord rules, Barrowmaze author Greg Gillespie and Rogue Comet have partnered to produce a 5th edition version of this classic megadungeon adventure. Over 250 pages of adventure with more than 600 dungeon rooms, a fully fleshed out local village and setting, new monsters, new magic items, maps, and a custom character sheet. It is great for a short adventure but with enough content for years of gaming!

Artwork is abundant and well-placed, picturing dozens of evocative scenes and situations. Fourteen artists are at work here. There are multiple, gorgeous full-page pieces, half-page pieces, quarter-page pieces, and smaller square pieces, all scattered throughout the volume.

The village of Helix, the starting point for the campaign, is detailed in full to provide a threshold to the adventure. Locations like The Brazen Strumpet Tavern (with a random patron generator), as well as the Shrine of St. Ygg (and many others), are laid out. Numerous sub-plots are included for the PCs to pursue both in town and to piece together information gleaned from Barrowmaze. The town includes a map of the various locations.

The Gazetteer for the surrounding towns and settlements, new to this ‘Complete’ product, is excellent. The geography includes 3 settlements, 3 rivers, 3 forests, a very large swamp, and a mountain range, all indicated via text description and hex map. The three settlements are Bogtown (village), Ironguard Motte (town plus castle), and Helix (village). The first two are detailed in a page or two each, whereas Helix is very detailed - at least eight pages of text description - and includes a village map with numbered locations. This is important, because Helix will be the PCs main base camp as they travel to and from the Barrowmaze. About forty NPCs are described across these three settlements (with handy pictures for fifteen of them, and stats for 22 of them), and the map for Helix details about sixteen places to visit. Stan Shinn — Stan has been playing RPGs since 1978 when his first character survived all of 90 minutes before dying in a fiendish dungeon trap. He's been hooked on role-playing ever since! Dr. Greg Gillespie — Dr. Greg Gillespie is an Associate Professor (Tenured) of Popular Culture at a university in Ontario, Canada. He regularly teaches a senior undergraduate course entitled The History and Culture of Role-Playing Games (for realz!). He is also the author/designer of a very popular Old School megadungeon called Barrowmaze Complete. You can read widely about the prior edition of Barrowmaze on the internet or you can find it here. Greg has a very successful, crowdfunding track-record and has completed three crowdfunding campaigns over the last four years either on-time or ahead of schedule. You can find them on Indiegogo. Through his professional expertise, he knows how to create, manage, and deliver outstanding game projects.
Risks and challenges
The original Labyrinth Lord version of the product is already complete, so we know what is going into the final products. The only work that remains is the 5e conversion and layout. We have already done initial work on the conversion and we think we can deliver this project without problems.
However, as with any manufacturing process, things can go wrong. We have identified that delays in layout and delays in printer setup could happen. So we have allowed additional time in our schedule as a buffer to enable us to avoid such delay issues. If all goes as planned we may even be able to deliver the project a little sooner.
We understand the printing process as our founder has published several fiction and nonfiction books before and has worked with multiple printers. With projects like this there is nearly always something that costs more, so it makes business sense to have contingencies for this. We have built this into our costs.
Conventional Kickstarter risks of fulfillment and printing are virtually nonexistent since we are using OneBookshelf's DriveThruRPG front end for printing and shipping on an at-cost basis for print-level backers.
