Barrowmaze Complete for 5e is a classic, old-school fantasy megadungeon updated for 5th Edition of the world’s most popular roleplaying game.
Secret Doors? Check, Deadly Traps? Check, Hidden Treasures? Check, Terrifying Monsters? Check, Slim Chance of Survival? Check.
Originally written for Labyrinth Lord rules, Barrowmaze author Greg Gillespie and Rogue Comet have partnered to produce a 5th edition version of this classic megadungeon adventure. Over 250 pages of adventure with more than 600 dungeon rooms, a fully fleshed out local village and setting, new monsters, new magic items, maps, and a custom character sheet. It is great for a short adventure but with enough content for years of gaming!
The 250+ page book contains:
- A fully-fleshed out gazetteer
- A megadungeon
- Player handouts
- Pregenerated characters
- A custom Barrowmaze-themed 5e character sheet
Local villagers whisper of a mysterious place deep in the marsh - a place shrouded in mist and dotted with barrow mounds, ruined columns, and standing stones. The tomb-robbers who explore beneath the mounds - or rather the few who return - tell tales of labyrinthine passages, magnificent grave goods, and terrifying creatures waiting in the dark. Are you brave (or foolish) enough to enter the Barrowmaze?
Barrowmaze Complete for 5e will keep your players on their toes and your campaign going strong.
Art by the aforementioned TSR artists Erol Otus, as well as Tim Truman, Jim Holloway. New old-school artists include Peter Pagano, Cory Hamel, Stefan Poag, Zhu Bajie, Stephan Thompson, and others.
Artwork is abundant and well-placed, picturing dozens of evocative scenes and situations. Fourteen artists are at work here. There are multiple, gorgeous full-page pieces, half-page pieces, quarter-page pieces, and smaller square pieces, all scattered throughout the volume.

Barrowmaze Complete for 5e begins with a gazetteer to get your adventure started:
- Towns and Settlements
- Adventure Hooks
- Rumor Table
- NPCs and Factions
- Pregenerated Characters
- A vast field of 60 barrow mounds above the dungeon
The village of Helix, the starting point for the campaign, is detailed in full to provide a threshold to the adventure. Locations like The Brazen Strumpet Tavern (with a random patron generator), as well as the Shrine of St. Ygg (and many others), are laid out. Numerous sub-plots are included for the PCs to pursue both in town and to piece together information gleaned from Barrowmaze. The town includes a map of the various locations.
Greg W. gave a 5 star review of the previous edition of Barrowmaze Complete on RPG Now. Here is his summary of the Gazetteer:
The Gazetteer for the surrounding towns and settlements, new to this ‘Complete’ product, is excellent. The geography includes 3 settlements, 3 rivers, 3 forests, a very large swamp, and a mountain range, all indicated via text description and hex map. The three settlements are Bogtown (village), Ironguard Motte (town plus castle), and Helix (village). The first two are detailed in a page or two each, whereas Helix is very detailed - at least eight pages of text description - and includes a village map with numbered locations. This is important, because Helix will be the PCs main base camp as they travel to and from the Barrowmaze. About forty NPCs are described across these three settlements (with handy pictures for fifteen of them, and stats for 22 of them), and the map for Helix details about sixteen places to visit. The core of the book is the vast megadungeon. The content is broken up into sections so you can dive into the adventure without having to read the entire book first. The megadungeon content includes:
- Over 600+ dungeon rooms
- 36 lavishly illustrated player handouts (each referenced in the text of the megadungeon itself)
- A dedicated monster section each with individual illustrations
- New magic items and spells
- Random Encounters
- Patron Generator
- Random tables for Dungeon Dressing, Graffiti, Runic Tablet Results, Dungeon Restocking, Sarcophagus Contents and more!
- Random Crypt Generator to create your own Barrows
- Enough old-school content for literally years of gaming!
Purchasing the Digital product gets you the entire book, plus black-and-white and blue-and-white maps of Barrowmaze in separate, one-page PDF files. The print product comes with a hardcopy book which includes the large map broken up into six pages inside the book. The large PDF will allow you to print the large, poster-size map at a local print shop if you so desire.

What People are Saying
Here are some examples of what people thought of the prior edition of Barrowmaze:
“I’m hard pressed to find any real faults with Barrowmaze. Nearly everything about the product is well done, from the layout to the artwork to the content and cartography. Indeed, Barrowmaze is nearly a textbook example of how to make a compelling, well-presented dungeon module.” — Grognardia
“I had never heard the acronym OSR stand for “Oh S!@t! Run!” before reading Barrowmaze, but it certainly fits.” — Tenkar's Tavern
“Barrowmaze is the dungeon I wish I had written, and I can’t offer any higher praise than that.” Tales From the — Flaming Faggot
“The author has used some interesting techniques to reinforce the theme of plundering long sealed tombs. There are frequent calls for excavation, or smashing through bricked up walls, to reach the hidden room beyond; much of the treasure is interred in burial catacombs (niches) carved into the walls, which require careful searching. Time is always a factor.” — Dreams in the Lich House

Stan is a former US Southwest D&D Adventurer's League Coordinator for 5th edition games, moderator of the largest D&D 5e Google+ community, author of several indie RPGs, and creator of many 5e tools such as a GM Screen and 1e to 5e conversion tools featured in EnWorld articles.
Nathan Panke — Nathan has been playing and running RPGs for over 25 years. He played his first role-playing game at a Boy Scout camp. Since then Nathan has played every version of D&D and any other RPG that he can get a hold of. Paul Oklesh — Paul is a relative newcomer to RPGs, having only been involved in the hobby for 3 years. He got his start through the D&D 5E playtests but has since dabbled in many different systems. Paul has written several adventures for 5E and has been published by EnWorld Publishing's EN5IDER magazine - his work "The Business of Emotion" (which was coincidentally written for this campaign setting) serving as their free sample adventure.
Damien Goldwarg — Damien was introduced to RPGs with the advent of 4th Edition D&D. He quickly fell in love with GMing and has been designing content ever since. When 5E entered its playtesting phase, he was among the first wave of people to adopt and master the new system. Risks and challenges
The original Labyrinth Lord version of the product is already complete, so we know what is going into the final products. The only work that remains is the 5e conversion and layout. We have already done initial work on the conversion and we think we can deliver this project without problems.
However, as with any manufacturing process, things can go wrong. We have identified that delays in layout and delays in printer setup could happen. So we have allowed additional time in our schedule as a buffer to enable us to avoid such delay issues. If all goes as planned we may even be able to deliver the project a little sooner.
We understand the printing process as our founder has published several fiction and nonfiction books before and has worked with multiple printers. With projects like this there is nearly always something that costs more, so it makes business sense to have contingencies for this. We have built this into our costs.
Conventional Kickstarter risks of fulfillment and printing are virtually nonexistent since we are using OneBookshelf's DriveThruRPG front end for printing and shipping on an at-cost basis for print-level backers.
No matter what problems occur we will always keep our backers and supporters informed of any issues that arise so you will be aware of the situation and how we will be handling it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
