Rogue Comet presents Adventure Location cards: a great tool for quickly creating roleplaying adventure scenes.
There will be one deck each for Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Modern settings. All the cards can be used with any tabletop roleplaying game system.
About half the cards in each of these decks have locations that are generic enough to use in any setting. Each deck will have 52 location cards with a plain, unmarked map on front, with additional location and adventure details on the reverse side.
Each card will feature:
- Location Name: Name is listed on the GM side, but not on the player side of the card, in case you want to hide the name from the players.
- Card Type: M for Modern, F for Fantasy, and S for Science Fiction, each with a genre color code.
- Thumbnail Map: These maps are intentionally not highly detailed. They are meant for inspiration and to allow you to quickly sketch a map for players during the game. Each location has areas labelled.
- Zones: Some larger areas are subdivided into ‘Zones’ to give you a sense of size, and are especially useful in game systems which use Zone based map mechanics.
- Area Descriptions: Each area has a labelled area description, along with a few Aspects.
- Area Aspects: Aspects are short tags which give a quick way to describe the area to players. Sometimes these Aspects give you adventure ideas: a room with ‘Trigger-Happy Fire Sprinklers’ just might lead to interesting results! Aspects are especially useful in games that use Aspects as game mechanics.
- Adventure Scenarios: Each card will list 3 to 6 quick adventure scenarios. Some are genre specific, but many could be easily adapted and used in any setting.
The back of the card is an unlabeled larger map. You can toss it across the table to the players for them to inspect. Better yet, have the players draw the map while you work on planning and setting up for the scene!
Some adventure locations cards will come in sets. In this example, we have a city block which will have three companion cards. Use them by themselves or combine with other cards to create a complete adventuring area on the fly!
Unlike many card decks which come in paper tuck boxes which easy fall apart over time, we are packaging our Adventure Cards in deluxe plastic cases which will protect your cards and allow for convenient storage.
Adventure Location cards for Fantasy, Modern and Science Fiction genres will have 52 location cards in each deck for a total of over 150 locations, complete with inspirational adventure hooks. These will be great tools for gamemasters to create RPG adventures on-the-fly. Back our Kickstarter today!
All backers at $15 or above will receive digital copies of the decks they are buying. These PDFs work great on mobile or tablet devices as well as the desktop.
Additionally, for each card we will provide an 8.5x11 inch letter-sized printout so you can print out the map for your players as a larger handout. I’ll also provide printable A4 versions of the Location Cards in addition to the US 8.5x11” letter size format.
We will also provide one comprehensive PDF of just the adventure scenarios in case you want to use these adventure ideas separate from the cards themselves.
Our goal is to reach $15,000 which allows us to complete the art and text for the 156 cards and bring the physical card deck products to our fans as soon as possible.
As we have done in our past crowdfunding campaigns such as our Dungeonesque RPG and adventure module products, we plan to have a private Google+ community where backers can view our products throughout the production process. This private community will serve as a forum where we can get feedback and improve the final product.
From font size to card layout, we'll want to get your feedback and will make changes as needed to make these cards the best products we possibly can!
Update: With the above community-feedback driven process in mind, we've made our first design improvement based on your comments. See below for a new candidate design which will remove the logo and make more room for text (and be less distracting to the player side of the card).
How do you support this project? It's very easy, just choose a pledge level and click "Back this Project." Here is a breakdown of the pledge levels (see sidebar text for additional details):
- $1 — Project Fan: You want to share your love of this project! This special pledge level doesn't include any of the rewards we're unlocking for backers, but is a way to show your support for these and future products.
- $15 — Digital Rewards: Gain access to the digital versions of all Adventure Location cards products.
- $18 — One Card Deck: One physical copy of a card deck of your choice with a deluxe plastic case as well as PDF versions.
- $40 — All Three Decks Early Bird Special: Available until first 100 pledged. Get physical copies of all three of the Adventure Location Cards decks with plastic cases as well as the PDF versions.
- $45 — All Three Decks: Get physical copies of all three of the Adventure Location Cards decks with plastic cases as well as the PDF versions.
$15,001 (UNLOCKED) — The Fantasy & Horror Instant Background Cards (instant PC or NPC backgrounds for High Fantasy, Gritty Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, and Eldritch Horror)
$20,000 (UNLOCKED) — Modern & Science Fiction Instant Background Cards (instant PC or NPC backgrounds for Sci Fi, Apocalyptic, Supers, and Western settings)
$26,000 (UNLOCKED) — Fantasy Puzzles & Traps (each card is a unique trap, riddle, or puzzle)
$35,000 (LOCKED) — Stations and Starports (galactic adventure location cards for planets, asteroid belts, space stations, and starports)
If you want an add-on additional individual decks after you've bought one or more physical decks, simply add $18 US to your pledge for each additional card deck that you want. We'll wave the shipping costs since you're already paying some shipping costs and we want to keep things simple. We'll do a survey after the Kickstarter ends to identify what products you want.
Here are some example scenarios:
>> If I wanted to get all 6 decks (3 map + 2 backstory) what should my pledge be?
You would pledge $45 (for the 3 location decks) and up your pledge $36 (adding on 2 x $18 for each Backstory deck) for a total of $81, plus shipping for your country.
>> So if I want the Fantasy and Sci-Fi decks and the two bonus decks, I would pledge for the Fantasy deck ($21) and then add $18 x 3 for a total of $75, correct?
We’ve just added a new ‘Two of the Three Decks’ option for $35, so you would pledge $35, and add $18 x 2, for a total of $71, plus shipping for your country.
Fantasy & Horror Instant Background Cards Add-on
All backers at $15 and above for any product will get the digital version of the Fantasy & Horror Instant Background Cards. You can up your pledge by an additional $18 to get a physical copy (no extra shipping costs if you are already buying a physical set).
This deck is a bit different than the location cards, but it’s a technique that I’ve been using in varying forms for the last five years. I find it invaluable to help new players quickly flesh out a character who has lots of background adventure hooks.
How does it work? You play a quick game of cards, and in ten minutes or less all players have a rich backstory which drives adventures, invests players into their character, and provides a set of a dozen or so NPCs.
The Fantasy & Horror Instant Background Cards is set one of a two planned decks. Each background card gives you backgrounds for four genres: High Fantasy, Gritty Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, and Eldritch Horror.
To develop your character’s backstory, hand out one or more each of the four Friend, Family, Foe, and Flame (a need or desire) cards. Players pick the NPCs and backstory they like best, and are welcome to trade cards. The players aren’t tied to the card’s backstory of course, but they do serve as great inspiration. Pass around Name cards to help players think of names for their NPCs.
Your backstory is a set of narrative hooks loaded with story potential to help you and your GM craft games based on your character. A basic backstory for a High Fantasy character might look like this:
“I have a friend who is a guild member of a secret organization. In my family, my stepfather looks to me to pay his gambling debts. My foe is a ruthless noble who sent my best friend needlessly to their death in a foolhardy mission. I want to obtain a magic weapon guarded by creatures of legend.”
If you’re in a hurry, you can stop there. Players hand in their cards, you as the GM stack them next to a note with their name, and boom: instant backstory!
Have more time? With some creativity, and feedback from your GM and other players, you can further modify the backstory suggestions. GMs should help players flesh out the backstory elements by asking questions. “Why did the sadistic warlord torture your friends?” “What will you do if you get the magic sword?” Encourage players to expand on these story starting points.
One common trick is to combine the Foe and Flame into one interconnected plot hook. Here is an example of the above backstory after some refinement:
“My friend Kandius is a member of the Black Shard, the local thieves guild. My stepfather Mardelbee looks to me to pay his perpetual gambling debts; what a pain! Not sure I’ll keep that up. More than anything I want put an end to Duke Sithgan, a ruthless noble who sent my best friend Landin needlessly to his death in a tomb-robbing mission to gain Sithgan yet another ancient relic. Duke Sithgan is heavily guarded by magic wards; to defeat him I will need to obtain the magic sword of Eleanir rumored to be guarded by shades in a lost cavern to the north.”
Another technique is to use these cards in-game to develop NPC backstories for people you meet. With just this one deck of cards, as a GM you’ll have nearly 200 adventure hooks to propel your games!
Modern & Sci Fi Instant Background Cards Add-on
As soon as we hit $20K, we will unlock the Modern & Sci Fi Instant Background Cards stretch goal. All backers at $15 and above for any product will get the digital version of these background cards, which work the same way as the Fantasy & Horror Instant Background Cards described above. You can up your pledge by an additional $18 to get a physical copy (no extra shipping costs if you are already buying a physical set).
All backers at $15 or higher will already get all Digital stretch goals as we unlock them. If you're buying only one deck, and you want get the digital versions of the other two location decks, just up your pledge by $10 and you'll receive all versions of the decks in PDF format.
- Shipping Costs — Kickstarter will collect shipping costs for physical products as you checkout. Shipping costs are $3 per deck in the US and $5 per deck for Canada. Internationally, shipping is $14 for one deck, and $23 for three decks.
- VAT and Duties — International customers are responsible for any VAT, customs fees, or duties that may be due at time of delivery. We are unable to estimate these fees. These fees are solely the responsibility of the recipient.
- Ship Dates — Final physical products sets will ship as soon as we have the products available, which could be as soon as 5 months but could take up to 11 months (if art production takes longer than expected or if we have high volume and print overseas).
Who We Are
Rogue Comet is an RPG company formed by fans of the hobby who want to create time-saving GM tools to make gaming easier. Together with a hoard of helpers and supporters we strive to create fantastic products for everyone! This will be our fourth crowdfunding project, and we look forward to expanding our product lines. Together with a hoard of helpers and supporters we strive to create fantastic products for everyone!
Risks and challenges
We have conducted multiple successful crowdfunding campaigns, and we think we can deliver this project without problems. However, as with any manufacturing process, things can go wrong. We have identified that delays in layout and delays in printer setup could happen. So we have allowed additional time in our schedule as a buffer to enable us to avoid such delay issues. If all goes as planned we may even be able to deliver the project several months sooner. We understand the printing process as our company has published several RPG products before and has worked with multiple printers. With projects like this there is nearly always something that costs more, so it makes business sense to have contingencies for this. We have built this into our costs. No matter what problems occur we will always keep our backers and supporters informed of any issues that arise so you will be aware of the situation and how we will be handling it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
