We (Rick and Staj) are fortunate to have fallen in love the outdoors and the ocean at a young age. It is through this shared passion that we've become a part of an amazing community made up of water-lovers and surfers; cyclists and climbers; and artists, makers and activists.
It is YOU, our community that excite us about life. You inspire, educate, and even challenge us to take risks, and to be courageous and adventurous, ever-learning, healthy, productive, proactive and compassionate people that care about people and the planet.
We are asking you to join Community for WAVES to help us spread our community's zeal for life—along with our passions and skills—to enrich the lives of Peruvian youth by teaching them about the art, craft and economic opportunities associated with with the trade of woodworking.
Your donation will help us raise $4000 to facilitate a wooden surf hand-plane building workshop in Lobitos, Peru with non-profit, WAVES for Development.
The workshop will allow students to experience fun, basic woodworking skills and tool safety, and provide them with a product they can use to experience the ocean and the waves in their own backyard, which many of them only watch tourists enjoy.
Your support will go a long way to empower the Lobitos community on many levels... through education, a hands-on trade experience, the courage and confidence that come through intimate moments when surfing waves, and via the economic and development possibilities linked with woodworking.
And... by joining a community-supported project like this, you are helping to advance this growing sustainable travel movement concept across the world! Just think, if every time someone traveled, they immersed themselves in the local community and shared their skills and passions with them, the world might just be a stronger, closer community.
In return for your contribution, we are offering some amazing gifts (see to the right) from several of our community members who believe in the power of hand-made craft, including posters by NW surf artist Todd Fisher, limited-edition Portland-made Truce Designs backpacks, wooden hand-planes by Rick himself, and even a chance to get your very own custom-shaped surfboard by Portland shaper, John Koenig.
THANK YOU so much for being a part of this project! We greatly appreciate any size contribution you can make, as every bit truly helps us reach our goal.
If you are looking for other ways to contribute, we are also bringing down wood working tools and 2 large bags full of used wetsuits to donate to the new Commuinty Education Centre that WAVES for Development is building/starting. So, if you've got a wetsuit you'd like to donate or any wood working tools, please email us. Thanks!

Risks and challenges
There is always an element of risk when traveling abroad, so we are keeping an eye on security in Peru, and will do our best to keep ourselves safe when traveling. We also realize there is a risk associated with wood working and we will do everything we can to adequately teach tool etiquette and safety.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
