CarMOBgeddon! It's Carma1 on your MOBILE THINGS!!

It's Philanthropy Phriday!

Thanking YOU for ALL your support!

We want to let you know how much the massive support you’ve shown so far means to us ALL here at Stainless. So, we’ve decided to officially announce some NEWS today, and extend an offer to you all as a way of expressing our eternal GRATITUDE.

We’ve had a couple of talented Stainless guys beavering away in a cupboard for just a few months. They’ve been assigned the task of converting the original Carmageddon to run on the iOS and Android platforms. And a day or two ago they staggered out, to announce that they’ve NEARLY FINISHED! And so, we're able to announce today that Carmageddon will be coming to your iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad and a variety of Android devices THIS SUMMER!

Fully optimized for mobile devices, Carmageddon features include:

  • Universal App.
  • A wide selection of touch control methods.
  • Intuitive gesture system allowing repair and recovery of the player vehicle in game.
  • Action Replay allowing players to save a movie and upload it to YouTube.
  • Game Center integration on iOS.

Game Center integration brings Achievements and Leaderboards to Carmageddon for the very first time. How much higher than your friends’ can your pedestrian count rise? Who’s pulled off the most Cunning Stunts? Now you’ll know!

Now, we plan to SELL this new version of the original game on app stores, in order to add to the funding for Carmageddon: Reincarnation. BUT, as a way of saying THANKS to YOU ALL, we’re going to launch Carmageddon on the App Store FREE for the first 24 HOURS!

NOTE: This offer relates to both the iOS AND Android versions. BOTH will be available FREE for the first 24 hours after they launch!

Yes, that's right...

CARMAGEDDON ON YOUR MOBILE THING - FREE for the first 24 HOURS!!

So you guys, and all our fans, will have an opportunity at launch to get the game for NOTHING, with our sincere THANKS for your support during this Kickstarter Campaign!

It’s impossible to get across in a video how much fun it is to play Carmageddon using the intuitive touch controls, or what a blast it is playing with the Action Replay controls – and SAVE MOVIES that you can the UPLOAD DIRECTLY to YouTube! But, we’ve made you a little taster video anyway! Here it is:

Looks FUN, EH? Well, we can confirm that it's by far and away
The Most Fun You Can Have With Your THUMBS! (TM)

Oh, and on a related note – we also plan to bring out a groovy little “PratCam App”, featuring Tony and Faye as Max and Die Anna! Have hours of fun laughing like a loon while doing your best to bash their brains out! Watch their innocent (what?) little faces react to your finger on the touch-screen as you shake ‘em, poke ‘em, and prod 'em... PLUS they also react to the motion of your phone’s accelerometer! Mount them in your car’s phone cradle, for your very own personal PratCam accompaniment to a journey! Make Tony's eyes pop out by repeatedly emergency stopping all the way down the street! Twat Die Anna's head against the rollcage by handbrake turning into a parking bay!*

Again, ALL the monies from the sale of the PratCamApp will go directly into funding Carmageddon: Reincarnation!

*Probably best NOT to do any of these things. Unless you own an abandoned airfield...

THANKS AGAIN, EVERYONE! And here’s the Official Carmageddon Mobile Press Release:

June 1st, 2012. Southern England, UK. Stainless Games unveils the iOS and Android versions of the original Carmageddon, and rewards Kickstarter Backers with free download offer.

Stainless Games today announced that the original classic "points for pedestrians" driving game Carmageddon will launch in the summer of 2012 on iOS and Android. Gamers around the world will soon have Carmageddon in the palm of their hands!

And as a way of saying a massive Thank You to their Backers on Kickstarter.com for funding their forthcoming brand new PC title Carmageddon: Reincarnation through a successful campaign on the crowd-sourced funding site, Stainless Games will be launching the iOS version of the game FREE on the iTunes Store for the first 24 hours after launch – so that Backers and Fans can enjoy the mobile touch-screen Carmageddon experience at NO COST!

The game is a conversion of the original Carmageddon PC game, with improved game engine and graphics.

“To get Carmageddon working on these new devices, and looking the best it’s ever looked, is just fantastic.  And what’s more, I’m now finally able to play Carmageddon on the toilet!”  said Stainless co-founder and Executive Director Neil Barnden.

“Carmageddon on a mobile is the most fun you can have with your thumbs,” said Patrick Buckland, co-founder and CEO of Stainless Games.  “And as a way of saying THANKS to our fantastic Kickstarter Backers for their amazing support, we’re going to launch Carmageddon on the App Store FREE for the first 24 hours!”

“Always remember – look both ways before crossing…” he added, “Particularly if you’re playing Carmageddon on your mobile at the same time…”

Carmageddon will be made available to download on app stores across the globe this Summer.

Pledges for the new game, Carmageddon: Reincarnation, on PC are still rising, with it looking likely the studio will make its first “stretch goal” of $600,000 (to fund Mac and Linux versions of the game), and head on towards the further stretch goals for special PratCam and Co-Op Multiplayer features to be added.

I haven't seen any News coverage about the mobile app showcase at Eurogamer Expo. Update us, please :)

    2. Creator Giuliano Giórgio Vegini on September 26, 2012

It was great news, thanks a lot! But I've been thinking, you guys should at least tell backers when you release it, though I think it'll still be unfair if backers miss the date and don't get to download it, I'd ratter have a redeem key given to all backers.

    3. Creator Nagy István on August 7, 2012

Hopefully we'll get some new about this. No updates on the site for a month. I understand that i haven't pledged enough for the private area but please post some screenshots a news about how the project is going. I'm fine without beta testing and other stuff. Thanks! :)

    4. Creator Antonidas|Archmage of the Obsidian Order on June 4, 2012

      Wow, this is awesome new!

      Hail Britannia!

    5. Creator Billy Wellen on June 4, 2012

I'll definitely get it on my other wifi-only devices (Kindle Fire, iPod), BUT I'd love to see this on WP7 or WP8 so I could play it live from EVERYWHERE!!!

    6. Creator David Metzener on June 3, 2012

@Mike Dennis, did it occur to you that Stainless Games may have looked at the development environment for WP7 and decided it wasn't worth dealing with at the moment? Or maybe they don't have any developers that know how to code for WP7?

Aside from the developer issue... The numbers are everything. At least when it comes to which platforms to develop for. For example, Android has shipped 89.9 million units, iOS has shipped 35.1 million units, and ALL OTHER PLATFORMS shipped a COMBINED 28.3 million units. Windows Phone 7 shipped 3.3 million units.

Are you saying that Stainless should just ignore 125 MILLION potential customers to try to attract gamers from a pool of 3.3 million?

Now, to develop for 125 million or 128.3 million. How much effort is necessary to develop for that 3.3 million when you have developers that have already developed for 125 million? Clearly, they looked at the numbers and decided that, FOR THE TIME BEING, Windows Phone 7 can wait.

    7. Creator cdar on June 3, 2012

Will it be a Carmageddon 1 version for Linux?

    8. Creator Dmitry Smirnov on June 2, 2012

Free only on ios? It's unfair!

    9. Creator Trond Solberg on June 2, 2012

Oh, when reading the update once more I see that it clearly states "this summer". Guess my eyes are failing on me. :-p

    10. Creator Trond Solberg on June 2, 2012

@Thomas; Thank you for clearing that up. I saw the 24h free and thought it had been released.

    11. Creator Thomas Loeb on June 2, 2012

@Trond It isn't out yet, it'll arrive through out the summer, which is suspected to be the time that the original Carmageddon will arrive on gog.com too

    12. Creator Trond Solberg on June 2, 2012

Is it out yet? I can't seem to find it in the AppStore.
      Is it only US?

    13. Creator Joakim Johansson on June 2, 2012

Finally we will be able to use our mobile phones for something good :)

    14. Creator Dave Woods [Owner of the Daffy Duck] on June 2, 2012

I'd go out and buy a Vita just for this...

    15. Creator Arubaro on June 2, 2012

Vita would be awesome, and 3DS would also be perfect. Carmageddon must be very satisfying in 3D!

    16. Creator starry on June 2, 2012

Awesome idea guy, but would definatly be better if it was made available for wp7 also.

    17. Creator Charles Clive on June 1, 2012

It would be great if the Windows version being released has the touch controls as an option - with Windows 8 tablets coming out soon, it would be awesome.

    18. Creator Tim Magoolaghan on June 1, 2012

Like others have stated, I LOVE that its coming to iPhone/iPad and will install it to my iPhone... But, I would really love to play Carmageddon on my Playstation Vita too! Is there any way you can port this to the Playstation Vita also?

    19. Creator Josh on June 1, 2012

Wow, you rock, Stainless!! Although the game is going to be free for the first 24 hours upon launch, you guys should add in a free copy of the portable version to one of the reward tiers. It would be a great incentive for people to pledge.

    20. Creator John Lewis on June 1, 2012

Is the android version going to take advantage of android 4.x native gamepad controls? I would very much like this feature.

    21. Creator Mike Dennis on June 1, 2012

@RageRiot, they made no statement about even considering a Windows Phone version, even after quite a few people commented on it. I know people like to use the market share of Windows Phone as a reason not to care about it, but even if you use the numbers for every smartphone users, those percentages aren't all that different than OSX and linux are compared to PC market share. I'm not saying they shouldn't have those versions of the game, just making a comparison here...

    22. Creator RageRiot on June 1, 2012

I pressed post comment once and it appeared twice.

    23. Creator RageRiot on June 1, 2012

To ask for a windows phone version is one thing but to whine for it and claim they are being unfair is unfair on them. I'm sure they'll be looking the possibility of doing it but each platform requires time and knowledge to complete.
the fact that they are offering a mobile phone version on 2 platforms for free for 24h is generous considering there are trying to fund the main project and with a large user base on both platforms they have a very good chance at making some extra cash.

It's a shame the iStore version is coming out before Android... Any idea on how much delay between the two?

    26. Creator Smeghead on June 1, 2012

Completely mental. Can't wait for this summer.

    27. Creator Angel Baker on June 1, 2012

sweeeet! awesome choice in music as well! man, seeing that brought back so many awesome memories! I cant wait!

    28. Creator Tom B. Zømbie on June 1, 2012

If you can do this it must be really easy to port it to Windows 7 x64? It'd be great to see a high resolution version of Carma1 for windows!! Please? Please!!! I'd up my pledge by $100!

    29. Creator Mike Dennis on June 1, 2012

    31. Creator Chris Horner on June 1, 2012

How about Windows Phone 7? Or just android/iOS?

    32. Creator LarseTheArse on June 1, 2012

Ryan, ThinkGeek sells add on joysticks... I haven't tried them, but I know that have been selling them for a while..

    34. Creator Daniel Bachschneider on June 1, 2012

Yeah, do a Vita version too - i'd increase my pledge definitely.

    35. Creator Ryan Smith on June 1, 2012

I'd prefer a PSVita version so I can have some physical controls.

    36. Creator Elliot Franford on June 1, 2012

Can't wait for my apple store download link for this bad boy!

    37. Creator BFishY on June 1, 2012

      Editting Carma wiki...

I would like to clarify... Are we getting this port due to the success of Kickstarter, or would this have happened anyway?

      Thanks.

    38. Creator LE BESCO on June 1, 2012

Thank for all your work, hope than you will say us the date of release for carmageddon on Android ;) And do you know when that will be available on GOG?

    39. Creator Martin Joakim Ulstein on June 1, 2012

Why not distribute the game for free with adds and unlock it banner free by paying.
You can also share a unlock key for the app that will connect the game to your carmageddon.com forum account where you activate the game. Maybe you can even log into your Carmageddon.com account from the gog version as well and sync stats between PC and mobile play?
      That would be awesome.

    40. Creator Jefferson F Santos on June 1, 2012

wow, cool graphics... i was wondering if theres possible to do a remake of the engine or some adaptation to run like this in the pc windows as well (maybe in the gog version)

    41. Creator Charles David Gibson on June 1, 2012

Awesome, just one more thing. WINDOWS PHONE 7!

I've had all of the OSes and WP7 beats the other two hands down. Shouldn't be difficult to port this to WP7. DO IT and I'll give you another $100!

      -Dave

    42. Creator Walter Carlton on June 1, 2012

I love how you always announce your best news on our wedding anniversary! :-D

    43. Creator Jeff on June 1, 2012

yah where is the port XD

    44. Creator Jared on June 1, 2012

      Err, where is it?

    45. Creator Jimday on June 1, 2012

ok ok, but when will we get the carma1 and splat pack from gog.com for free?

    46. Creator Chris Langevin on June 1, 2012

I hope you guys give us notice before it goes up on the APP store... i would hate to miss out on the oppurtunity to get this for free...

    47. Creator pureatheist on June 1, 2012

So Android version won't be free even for a day, only the iOS one? I wanted to raise my pledge, but if so, I think I'll hold with it. If you favor big companies, who don't give a damn about their customers (hello, Apple), I'm not sure that I can trust you. Probably I would wait those 24h to pay for the game anyway, but I don't like that you treat one group better than another.

    48. Creator Mike Dennis on June 1, 2012

Eric, iOS is on the iPod Touch, which is basically the iPhone, most people who have iPods don't have those, but have some other type. Also, biggest mobile gaming, if it actually is, would be for all users. Fans of the original were into PC games, since it was a PC game, which would generally be people that are more technically savvy, since you need to know specs and how to fix it. Other than people who are just big Apple fans, they usually go with Android or now WP7 (which is now close to 2 years old). Regular people are more likely to buy iOS devices...and they probably aren't the type of people who would be interested in Carmageddon or had played the original game before. I know a made a bunch of assumptions here, but a lot of it is based on my observations in gaming communities and the tech community in my area.

    49. Creator David Metzener on June 1, 2012

@Mike Dennis: What? Are you serious?

"I know iOS is very popular, but maybe the least popular of the three for people who would actually be interested in this type of game."

iOS is one of the most popular mobile gaming platforms there is. It has well over 600,000 apps in the iOS App Store with a very large percentage of that number being games. Android closely follows iOS with similar claims.

Windows Phone is a great phone OS, but it's still quite new and only has a couple of phones out compared to Android's 4,000 unique handsets and iPhone, iPod touch and iPad's 50+ million devices sold.

I think a poll of what devices the backers used would show iOS and Android pretty close to each other and Windows Phone a distant 3rd. Just look at the stats in the real world to see what this microcosm of 12,600+ people would be.

    50. Creator TwIsTeDMiNd on June 1, 2012

WOW!! Just WOW!! You guys (at Stainless) will never cease to impress me...the game looks sharp and clean!! Great news to hear!! I'm SO happy a legend is reborn! :D
