This Kickstarter will fund the production of
rewards, not the photo project. I am funding the photo project myself.
You'll find all the details below, contact me if you have any questions.
30 Days: June 1 through June 30, 2012.
30 Photos: Collection curated in collaboration with the project's backers.
30 Dollars: Pledge amount for one 11" x 14" archival photographic print.
All photos will be taken along the Southern California coast, mostly in Venice Beach, Marina del Rey and Santa Monica.
WHY 30 DAYS?
There are 30 days in June. One month is good length of time to put the collection of photos together. Not too rushed and not too drawn out.
WHY 30 PHOTOS?
Because the prints are limited editions. In order for my photography to remain valuable, it's important to limit the production of each image. By having 30 photos in the collection, there are plenty of choices for the backers and I won't have to over-produce any one image.
WHY 30 DOLLARS?
A lot of people can afford $30. Well known artists sell plenty of work because it is continuously visible and available to collectors. The more people see my work, the greater chance I have of building a name for myself and selling more photographs. Although I think the usual $200 is a fair price for one of my limited edition 11" x 14" prints, offering them for $30 makes the work accessible to a lot more people. Because I want to have my photographs on display in the homes and businesses of hundreds of collectors as soon as possible, I am pre-selling them for $30 until May 31st. After that date, the price will be $200.
It's the minimum needed to be able to offer prints for $30. After discussing quantity price breaks with labs and suppliers, I calculated that by selling around 350 prints, I could afford to sell archival quality 11" x 14"s for $30 and fulfill the goal of making my work affordable to a large number of collectors. I thought the number 333 was more interesting than 350, so I rounded down a little. If 333 people buy a print for $30, the total is $9,990.
USE OF FUNDS
Funds will be used to produce the rewards and an extra set of prints for my portfolio. Specifically, the money will be used for: professional, archival quality printing of the photographs; professional, archival quality mounting, matting and framing; museum boxes for portfolio print storage; shipping supplies; shipping costs; Kickstarter fees; credit card fees; and administrative costs to manage and fulfill the orders. I added 20% contingency for unforeseen expenses. In the event that there are none, I will use the funds to promote my work.
The purpose of this Kickstarter project is to build awareness of my work by making it so affordable that hundreds of collectors can own and enjoy it NOW. I also think the audience-curation makes it more fun to be involved in the project and gives backers a personal connection to the photographs. I want people to talk about the project and tell their friends about my work.
HOW THE CURATION WORKS
Everyone who pledges $10 or more gets the right to help curate. You can participate in the curation process as much or as little as you like. The collection starts with the ten images shown below; 20 additional images will be added in June, during the 30 day project period. As a backer, you can help select which images will be included in the final collection by giving feedback and voting as new images are added. By June 25, the collection will be finalized and you will have until June 30 to select your print(s).
FUTURE BOOK AND EXHIBIT
I plan to create a book about the project that can be viewed online for free at blurb.com. I expect to design and write the book in July. Once it is finished, I may do another Kickstarter project to pre-sell printed copies. I will also work to secure an exhibit for the collection. All curators will be credited in the book and exhibit.
If you have further questions, contact me.
The project has been covered online by the San Francisco Chronicle, Yahoo! News, Digital Journal, and a number of blogs. If you know any bloggers or journalists who might want to write about "30 Days. 30 Photos. 30 Dollars.", please share the news release with them.

MIX AND MATCH PRICING
You can mix and match prints in any way to create a custom reward package. Choose "MIX AND MATCH" as your reward, use the price chart below for reference, and make your pledge amount enough to cover all the items that you want.
All prices include shipping. Prices are slightly higher for international customers to cover the increased shipping costs. There are no quantity discounts.
Mix and Match Examples: If you wanted three prints, two standard and one framed, your pledge would be $180 ($30 x 2, plus $120 x 1). Suppose you want to do your holiday shopping early and buy three framed prints and three standard prints... the price would be $450 ($120 x 3, plus $30 x 3). If you need help calculating your pledge amount for a custom package, send me a message.
16" x 20": (20 available) These limited edition prints, normally priced at $900, are available for a pledge of $500.
24" x 30": (10 available) These limited edition prints, normally priced at $1,900 are available for a pledge of $900.
Both larger sizes are signed on print verso. If you prefer that your print be framed or mounted and signed on mat recto as well, contact me for the appropriate pledge amount as it will depend on your matting or framing requirements.
Prints will be shipped by the end of July, 2012.
All backers are entitled to one download of "Sunset Cocktail", the song I made for the project video.
Below are the first ten images in the collection. You can choose your print(s) from these ten, or from the additional 20 images that will be added in June. Larger versions of these images and my other limited edition prints can be viewed on my photography website.
