SSRadio was born in 2005 out of a love of deep & soulful House music. Founded by a collective of DJs passionate about their scene, we put our hearts and souls into creating a unique platform that would offer House music fans a place to get the music they love, upfront and on tap.
It's fair to say that we achieved our goal, building a community of like-minded people where they could feel right at home. And all this before Facebook even existed. A project like this required an immense amount of enthusiasm to get off the ground, and we worked tirelessly within our beloved music scene to tell the world about it.
However, as the community grew, so did the running costs, and before we knew it we were having to deal with ever-increasing bandwidth bills and licensing costs. Thankfully, our DJs were happy to contribute a small monthly fee, which enabled us to support the growth of the station.
Being centered around a radio schedule, there is a limit to how many DJs we can host on our rosta, hence this caps the revenue that they are able to generate for us. Our only other sources of income are through advertising and listener donations, but these don't amount to much, and the time has come where we are forced to make the sad decision as to whether or not we can afford to keep the station going.
Hence, we are asking for your help to enable us to build a brand new platform with premium features that will allow us to generate the additional income that we need in order to stay on air. Whether you've been a regular listener to the station over the last 10 years, a DJ or producer that's gained exposure from the station...or just plain love House music – we urge you to give something back so that you can continue to enjoy our music into a second decade.
Planned features for the new platform include:
- Optimised for mobile devices
- Personalised playlists
- Real-time track IDs
- Suggestions & recommendations of shows/mixes you might like
- Simplified mix/playlist upload for DJs
- Social network integration
This really is 'do or die' for us – if we don't make our target then we will be closing the doors on 31st December 2014 as we will not have the funds to continue broadcasting. Please pledge your support, however small, and help us continue keeping the spirit alive since 2005.
In return for your generosity, not only will you have our eternal gratitude, but for those that pledge over £25 we have several rewards including annual subscriptions to the new platform and all-new limited-edition T-shirts. But every donation, no matter how small, will take us closer to our goal, and could truly mean the difference between life and death for SSRadio.
Risks and challenges
If we successfully raise our target, we will commission our team of designers and developers to start building the platform we need to sustain us into into our second decade of existence. These guys have been with us since the beginning, so know our audience inside-out – and they're itching to get started. We will carry out a survey of our existing users as to which features they would most like to see in the new platform, so that this can help guide the new specification.
The first stage of the project will be to give our existing site a refresh in terms of a responsive design, back-end technology upgrades, and performance improvements, which we would aim to roll out by the end of the 2014. This refreshed design will form the beginnings of the new platform, so it will allow us to collect valuable user feedback and usage data which can be fed back into the development cycle of the overall project to ensure that the new platform offers the best possible user experience upon launch.
One particular technology which we are very keen to integrate into the back end of the site is Shazam-style music recognition, so that our DJs don't have to manually type out their playlists each time they upload a mix. We have already been in talks with a partner who we can integrate with to offer this facility, so we don't see it as a hurdle, however even if this isn't ready in time then it won't delay the launch, as we can easily add it in once ready.
We welcome all suggestions and offers of assistance/services that may help in reaching our goal.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
