If you've been part of our journey since December of last year...you'll know that we've been able to establish a very important community initiative, in a very short period of time--and with your amazing support!
We’re extremely excited to see our new storefront location up and running, after only first few wonderful months of creative workshops---and to show Ottawa and the world, really, some of our member's amazing work!
theSpace is an innovative forum for the creative use of media and various technologies, and an exciting range of artistic and social enterprise opportunities.
Members are independent adults on the Autism Spectrum, or with an intellectual disability, who, along with a group of new friends and acquaintances, are guided through the stewardship of their own community---and building a self-generated identity.
Originally fueled by a grassroots initiative and our first, very successful December, 2017, Kickstarter campaign, led by Ottawa-based social community advocate, Mignon Mildenberger, theSpace has turned a ground-breaking vision into a prototype to support Apprenticing for Creative Self-Employment!!
As we say on our website---theSpace is addressing a gap in opportunities for individuals often assigned to 'work' situations which are difficult to sustain and repetitious. Whether just striking out on their own, after completing high school and post-graduate programs, or many years on, many individuals can find themselves in a situation where they feel isolated and disconnected from community.
This means, basically, with our truly groundbreaking focus on member's interests, through facilitator-guided, social skill building and mentoring activities, alongside the digital enhancement of creations and ideas--theSpace is bridging that gap---and personal expression and entrepreneurship has reached new heights!
Our workshops support the use of accessible technology, including using computer editing software, photo manipulation and other digital tools and techniques.
We’ve even begun to begin sharing work with the larger community--- by way of an innovative social enterprise platform called Patreon!
TheSpace has just begun an exciting journey, slowly expanding our reputation and demonstrating to our immediate and wider community and networks, that this approach really works!
Right now we are at a critical juncture---and after a first year in operation (as of February 2018)--where we need to ensure that we can pay our monthly rent, while continuing to increase our core group of members...and become even more sustainable, as we grow our brand!
We anticipate that by this time next year...if we can continue to grow at this rate---that we will be completely sustainable !

Risks and challenges
With a hard working and diverse team we have successfully made theSpace an increasingly viable prototype for a respectful, safe and comfortable environment for individuals with Autism and intellectual disabilities to learn, create and connect. It has been a lot of work and quite a journey of discovery.... and we understand that we can only thrive with the continued support of community.
We understand too that maintaining staff and members is the key to our continued success. We have asked a lot of our small team, and they have sacrificed a lot of time and energy, while working as efficiently as possible to reach our goals and respond to our vision---and we'll continue to depend on them for their innovation and dedication!
Continuing to be creative, and following a sometimes bumpy and untried path, will always be a challenge we willingly accept. We will continue to seek out new partners and support, and to find a better way, as well as ensuring that we retain a focus on providing the highest quality of workshops and facilitators, to ensure that we spark a desire to learn.
At the same time, our vision entails promoting our current and future artists, using online platforms and offering more apprenticing opportunities.
A final and major challenge: Time. Not enough time do everything! We have the creativity and vision; we have members who are continually expressing new ideas, and creating some even more amazing things! With your support, we will have the continued opportunity---and time may actually be on our side!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
