Snippets is the fast paced anything goes word game!
Perfect for a party or family game night, Snippets is for 2-8 players and takes about 45 minutes. It can best be described as a combination of Scrabble and Scattergories, but unlike Scrabble, you don’t need a crazy vocabulary to win, unlike Scattergories there’s no ambiguity, and unlike most word games, the “smartest” player doesn’t always win.
A "snippet" is a short sequence of letters that can be found as a whole within one or more words. For example, the snippet IPP can be found in the words SNIPPETS, QUIPPED, and HIPPIE but not in SHIPSHAPE, PIPE, or HOPPING.
Players have 60 seconds to write down as many words as they can think of that contain each round's snippet. Anything goes! Dictionary words, people names, place names, brand names, fictional things, technical terms, slang, acronyms, abbreviations, contractions, hyphenations, non-english words, the snippet itself, and even plurals and alternate verb tenses are all allowed!
When time's up, players compare answers, earning points for unique words and fun bonuses. The player with the most points wins the round and the first to 3 rounds wins the game!
With its unique "anything goes" rule, Snippets isn't like most word games, requiring more of a creative mind than a large vocabulary. And with only 60 seconds to think, everyone’s answers will be equally hilarious.

Hi Kickstarter, I’m Shaun Salzberg, the creator of Snippets!
A software engineer by day, I’m also the founder of The Master Theorem Games, a game company that continues the legacy of M’s The Master Theorem puzzling society from 2011. (For those of you familiar with the society, you may remember me as M’s lackey and tech guy, P.) Like The Master Theorem, The Master Theorem Games aims to cultivate the minds of tomorrow with smart games and puzzles that are accessible to everyone. Snippets is our flagship product, and we need your help to get it off the ground!
I came up with the underlying concept for Snippets over a decade ago on a long road trip. As I stared out the window at billboards and the surrounding scenery, I noticed that certain words had some really cool -- and really unexpected -- letter combinations in them. For fun, I’d give some of these combinations to my friends and challenge them to think of words that contained them.
Ever since then, I’ve been obsessively playing with and refining this idea. Back in 2008, I made a web game called Substring, then soon after turned it into an iPhone game. After writing some custom software to generate optimally fun letter combinations and going through multiple iterations of the game’s mechanics, I developed the most recent version of the Substring app, which has been mentioned in the New York Times, on Z100’s morning show, and has thousands of downloads.
Now I want to bring this unique concept to you as a completely reimagined tabletop party game, great for families and friends alike. I’ve carefully crafted the “anything goes” rule to make Snippets a word game that even people who don’t like word games will like... unlike Scrabble, you don’t need a crazy vocabulary to win, unlike Scattergories there’s no ambiguity, and unlike most word games, the “smartest” player doesn’t always win.
But to make this game a reality, I need your help! As an engineer from Columbia University and MIT who’s worked in manufacturing before, I’m confident I can produce this game for you. But still, it's not easy to manufacture small quantities of board games, and it's even harder to do it in the United States at an affordable price. So please, help me meet a reasonable minimum order quantity of 1000 units, and together we can bring a fun, smart, and accessible word game to homes everywhere.
With the exception of the “Art Lover” reward tier, shipping is not included with your preorder. For US orders, shipping for 1 game is an extra $7. For shipping to other countries, you’ll be able to see the cost at checkout.
I do apologize to all you international backers out there for the higher shipping costs! This is our first rodeo with the logistics of fulfillment, so creating a world-wide, customs-friendly shipping network right out of the gate is unfortunately not possible for us at this time. We promise to improve our shipping costs the next time around though!
Risks and challenges
I’ve been hard at work over the past 6 months making sure there are as few hiccups as possible in getting Snippets to your door.
Snippets started out as a very different game, with a slew of issues typical of any initial game design. But over the months, I’ve extensively playtested it with dozens of focus groups comprised of game designers, non game designers, word game lovers, word game haters, adults, children, friends, and strangers. With each test, the game has gotten stronger and stronger, and I’ve carefully incorporated my playtesters’ feedback into the final product. I’m now very confident that the current set of rules is extremely solid (and extremely fun!).
Snippets also started out as a simple black and white paper prototype with no graphic design. But I’m lucky to have had the chance to work with a brilliant designer and branding expert, James Gibbs, whose artwork really makes the game come alive. With all the thought and effort that’s already gone into it, and after working out the kinks through multiple iterations of actual, physical prototypes, the graphic design is basically print-ready.
In terms of manufacturing the game and getting it to your door, much of the legwork has already been done as well! The fundraising goal and reward tiers are all based on actual quotes I’ve received from manufacturers, so I’m confident that if this project gets funded, I’ll have the necessary financial resources to execute on it. I’ve also chosen to work with a US-based manufacturer to avoid the common logistical issues that so frequently cause delays in the fulfillment of Kickstarter projects produced overseas (i.e. communication problems due to timezone differences and language barriers, the hassle of freight shipping, getting stuck in customs and/or hit with import taxes, setting up a separate domestic fulfillment center, etc). The factory I intend to work with has come recommended from other successful project creators, and can handle everything from production to fulfillment.
Despite all of the hard work that’s already gone into making the production of Snippets a seamless process, there are of course always unknown challenges ahead. Once funded, I will have to work closely with the manufacturer to make sure that the final product is made with high quality materials and packaged well, which may take some back and forth to get right. And depending on when the order gets placed, the production and shipping times may vary slightly.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
