We're going to record and release our third record! It's called Sqwonk + and will feature recent compositions for Sqwonk in collaboration with some of our favorite Bay Area artists.
This album grew out of several concerts in recent years where we shared the bill with another ensemble and often joined forces with them in a new piece or arrangement. We absolutely loved this form of collaboration, and are thrilled to document some of the projects from these shows, as well as to create some new ones especially for this record.
The artists we're recording with are:
- Vocalist Amy X Neuburg, in her composition She Got Away
- ZOFO piano duo, in Jonathan Russell's Sqwonkzoforus Rex
- The Living Earth Show (guitar and percussion duo), in a new arrangement of selections from the Rite of Spring
- Nonsemble 6 (mixed chamber ensemble) in a new chamber version of Jonathan Russell's Bass Clarinet Double Concerto
- Rootstock Percussion in Barbara White's Repetition Compulsion
- The Real Vocal String Quartet, in a new work by Alisa Rose.
We've already recorded most of the tracks for the album, and are very excited with how things are going so far. We were also fortunate to receive some funding from the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music's Musical Grant Program, and a Faculty Development Grant from the San Francisco Conservatory.
However, we still need to raise funds to pay for the extensive work involved in editing, mixing, mastering, design, and production of the CDs -- that's where you come in! Any support you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
We plan to release the album in March 2014 with a CD release show in the San Francisco Bay Area.
As we mentioned in the video, we have some really exciting rewards, some of which are due a bit more explanation. Most importantly, we are very excited to announce SLAPSTICK, the world's first lip balm/cork grease combination! That's right, you can finally use it for both! This is a custom, all-natural, small-batch, handmade, free-range, cage-free recipe developed by Sqwonk that will keep your corks and lips healthy and happy!
We're also excited to offer one-of-a-kind items - a piece written by Jon just for you, or a custom clarinet barrel made by Jeff at Clark Fobes' workshop (it can double as a candlestick holder if non-clarinetists are interested).
And, get yourself invited to our listening party in March to celebrate the pre-release of the album!
Risks and challenges
Sqwonk has a strong track record, having successfully completed two self-produced albums in the past. This project is a bit more complex since there are more musicians involved, and since one member of Sqwonk (Jon) is no longer living in the Bay Area.
However, we have already managed to record most of the album, and are all set to record the final track this fall. Editing and mixing will also be more complex tasks than on our past albums, but we have great confidence in our recording engineer and producer. We are fully confident that we are on track to complete an album of the highest quality on the schedule we have set, but we will update you all immediately if anything looks like it will change.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
