As avid fountain pen users, we have been on the lookout for the perfect Tomoe paper notebook for quite some time. Something with a whole lot of paper, yet with all the cool features of traditional journaling notebooks.
What's in a name?
The name Hippo Noto was largely inspired by our son who passed away too soon. Hippos were his thing, and now he is our hippo in the sky. We wanted to create a large, hippo sized notebook, and the name seemed fitting. Noto means "notes" in Japanese, which is where the Tomoe paper is imported from. We hope you enjoy taking hippo notes!
Why Tomoe paper?
Tomoe is an incredibly thin paper that is both feather and bleed resistant. Made in Japan, it has superior smoothness while being durable. Tomoe paper brings out the magic in a variety of inks, many times showing sheen or shading that might otherwise be left dormant. The Hippo Noto has 500 pages of cream Tomoe paper, so feel free to experiment!
Hippo Noto has a variety of features, many of which are not found on other Tomoe paper notebooks.
Hippo Noto is a "Pocket A5" size. It is a little smaller than the traditional size, measuring 131mm x 208mm. Being a 500 page notebook, we figured making this hippo shorter would only make it more portable and enjoyable.
Initially there will be three color options.
Stretch Goal Color Choice: Forest Green!
We have been lucky enough to have Robert Oster create an ink exclusive to Hippo Noto. It is a very well behaved ink that is the true color of hippos. Custom purple, with shades of pink, brown and a black/plum sheen. Manufactured in the Coonawara wine district in South Australia. Choose an inky reward and this color will be yours!

Risks and challenges
We are anticipating a smooth project but there is always the potential for bumps along the road. These notebooks are being made overseas, with the paper being imported from Japan. From there the books get assembled in China. The timeline is probably the greatest challenge but we have a great team and an excellent manufacturer who will work hard to produce this product in a timely fashion.
