About this project

Here's what we're doing;

The project: El Comienzo

This project encompasses several parts, each different but relating to the same ideals of community. The first part of the project will document Radical Street Art in Mexico during a time of political upheaval, mainly concentrating on San Cristobal de las Casas and Oaxaca. This area has been home to radical action such as the Zapatista movement, the student strikes and struggle for autonomous communities, and La Lucha to save the remains of the Lacondon Jungle. Street Art creatively portrays the resistance and is one voice for people and communities whose voices have been suppressed. It can also bring the community together to express a call to action, mourning, outrage, anger, celebration and the range of human emotions tied to resistance against oppression.

Parte Dos: Y Continuando

The second part of this project involves working with and documenting Maya Pedal, an NGO in San Andrés Itzapa, Guatemala that empowers Indigenous communities by building and teaching about "Bicimaquinas" (pedal powered machines) to live sustainably and autonomously. To sustain ones own community brings the community together in a way that liberates individuals from reliance on an oppressive system without reverting to the harsh effort of using solely hand power.

El Fin

The project will culminate in a book published at a worker-owned collective print shop that can share these diverse means of community resistance in Mexico and Guatemala. Street Art is both a call to action and a visual manifestation of the emotional complexities of a community in upheaval while Pedal Power provides a practical service to the same community. This book seeks to share the struggles in Mexico and Guatemala through photography, interviews, and observation and highlight sustainable community and its forms of resistance. A crucial aspect of this project is to relate the documented struggles with those in America and inspire empathy, solidarity and replication. This book will not be just a document but a tool to build community and empower others in their struggles.

Why We Need Your Help

We need money to buy film, process it in the darkroom, make digital prints and cover some of our travel expenses. The more money we raise, the more film and prints we can afford!
