About

UPDATE

I have been in contact with the owner of a 1947 Guy Arab similar to the one above, it is clear inside and mechanically all there and running too! He has promised to hold onto this vehicle for me to have a look at if all is successful, and if not he has some others available too within the budget of this project! Looking good!

About Us

My name is Mike, I am a fire performer, equilibrist, juggler, and lover of tea, buses, and festival life. I dream big and love life, and I want to make something amazing. I have a crew helping me with this project, designers, builders, mechanics and artists, as well as a lot of very happy willing supporters.

The Idea

I have grown up in a family where tea is important. My mother still makes a brew with real tea leaves rather than a terrible tasting tea-bag which is more than likely why I have this love affair with decent tea. Far too many places don't care about tea the way coffee shops care about coffee. Tea is a very flavourful drink and if you put dust in a bag, it is hardly tea.
I want to get decent proper brews out there, and I want to do it in style. My plan is to get hold of a vintage bus and give it the second life it deserves, transforming it into a mobile tea supplier for travelling around the country to festivals, events, and private hires.

Tea!

We plan to create a unique tea experience in a truly British fashion for this project. We shall be hosting a very wide range of other teas that are favourites around the country, including many fruits, herbal, green, and of course, a proper British brew.
I have been in contact with Teapigs who supply loose teas around the country and they are very excited about this project, offering us support and help, as well as their menus for our testing.

Plan

Tea in my own personal opinion is something very magical, blooming flower teas may have been around for a long time now but they are rarely seen outside of specialist suppliers, shops, or China. We have an idea of what we want this to do for all senses, an amazing taste and smell, along with an interesting visual in the cup in the form of the blooming flower, set off by the heat of the water.
We then need to deliver this tea to you by the best means possible, in a customised vintage bus, with full kitchen to produce these wonders along with some other home-made cakes and things, as well as a seating area.

The Bus

First I plan to purchase and restore a suitable vehicle and give it a full work over. This is not a cheap process for old tired vehicles however with help from some family craftsmen I plan to get it in full working mechanical order. Next I shall take it to a specialist and get it fitted out with proper leisure batteries and electricity supply, new eco lighting, plumbing, bespoke kitchen and seating inside. I would also like to have solar panels on the roof for charging the batteries if budget allows.
As it will be a travelling business, I plan for the upstairs to be used as somewhere for storage, and a place to sleep for staff, along with spare beds for pledgers to stay with us if they join in at festivals. There will also be toilet and washing facilities on-board.
A brand new paint job will be the finishing touch. I have already talked to a willing artist who is currently designing a new look for the bus which will keep the aesthetics at a premium.
The preferred vehicle in question would be the same model that Sir Cliff toured with in his film Summer Holiday, an AEC Regent III RT, this being the inspiration for the project itself, a classic British icon. All plans and designs will be using this as a base model so we can have a definitive space to work with, but it is subject to change if the vehicle changes too.
Artwork, plans, contracts, budgets and everything else will be added as and when it comes, keep you in the loop of how my project will work, and how it will turn out.

Where we will go

I would love to be accepted in the future to places like Glastonbury, Smallworld, Boomtown, and other big events even though I know that these already have a large amount of sellers already. Seeing as I am focussing my attentions to Steampunk though, I have plans to stay local at first with the Medway Festival of Steam and Transport, Rochester's Dickens Festival, and also the Kent Steam Gala in Tunbridge Wells, as well as try and attend a lot of vehicle rallies and events locally. So far I have had support from the British Juggling Convention primarily and am still in talks with others.

Funding and budget.

Your help with funds will go on developing and testing for our new tea and for help with the bus. We will be doing taste tests and a lot of research as to what teas and cakes people would actually like to have access to. I have been in contact with the company Teapigs, and they have offered us their services when we start.
My breakdown of budget consists of £15,000 for the bus cost and restoration together, so lets say a suitable vehicle is purchased for £8,000, then there is £7,000 for restoring and getting mobile. £7,500 will go on parts and labour and £2,500 on stock. About £3000 will be from kickstarter fees and the remainder for getting the bus to various locations.
I understand that this is a very small budget for such a huge project, but I am asking for your support to get this Tea Bus up and running on the streets of England where you can see it. The starting point for what will hopefully be a long and exciting journey!

Goal

My overall goal of this project is to make a new tea experience just for you, to be delivered in the best possible way. It will be, without a doubt, perfect, ready for every festival, convention, event and party known to man. I am confident this will be the best use of an vintage bus, giving it a new lease of life, with amazing flavours being the headline.

Risks and challenges

As for every project, you budget very carefully what needs to be done and the biggest worry is that once that work gets underway, new costs crop up. I therefore need to keep a close eye on every detail of the bus conversion, so as to ensure that every penny is spent as it should be.

The main challenge I foresee is that our donor vehicle may well be over 50 years old. Upkeep is high and parts difficult to source however the first overhaul is to be done by an expert mechanic who will coach me in upkeep.
I am always on the lookout for vehicles, and I have many options but finding a cheap but good bus is a challenge I am hoping to overcome.

Another challenge will be designing the interior of the bus in a way to make sure it is workable. Often you don't spot this until you start working in a space, and then suddenly find everything takes much longer than it should, as every time you go to a cupboard, the door opens into where you are trying to make the tea! These are things I have set aside for my designer to overcome, she has been doing interior design for about 5 years now and is a lot better at working out spaces than I am.

Setting up any new business is a challenge, I believe that because we will not have any rent to pay, the outgoings of this final project will be a lot less, however it has been taken into account petrol, insurance, and large quantities of stock. I have willing volunteers to help in many aspects of this project, and I hope they will help me see it through to its full potential.
