Hello! / Привет! We are Sputnikat Press, a Moscow-based comics press, committed to publishing the best independent comics from talented Russian and international illustrators and cartoonists.
What is PersonaЖ?
We are seeking funding for our second book, PersonaЖ: A Week in the Life of Daria. PersonaЖ (pronounced like 'personnage' in French and meaning 'character ' in Russian) is a 64-page, two-colour risograph-printed comic book, that takes a novel approach to the comics anthology - seven artists come together to create a new character, and then tell the story of one week in the character’s life, one day per artist.
This is our second book - the first edition of PersonaЖ gathered together four artists from Russia, UK, Switzerland and Netherlands and we came up with Nikolai, a quiet van driver from Moscow. The stories in PersonaЖ #1 were by Andrey Petranin, Arina Shabanova, Evgenia Barinova, Irina Troitskaya (Russia), Christopher Rainbow (UK), Lika Nüssli (Switzerland) and Jeroen Funke (Netherlands).
For our new book, we have assembled another fantastic team of illustrators and cartoonists from around Europe, to create a new character - Daria, an intrepid TV reporter from St Petersburg. Accompanied by her loyal cameraman and beloved pet snake, Daria encounters swarms of malevolent angels, the hunt for a corrupt businessman, an escaped tiger, lust at first sight and the curious case of Nina Petrovna’s deceased dog.
The team for PersonaЖ #2: A Week in the Life of Daria is a fantastic array of comics and illustration talent.
MONDAY - Irina Troitskaya (Russia)
TUESDAY - Katya Dorokhina (Russia)
WEDNESDAY - Mikkel Sommer (Denmark)
THURSDAY - Martoz (Italy)
FRIDAY - Andrey Petranin (Russia)
SATURDAY - Anton Mariinsky (Russia)
SUNDAY - William Goldsmith (UK)
The beauty of Riosgraphy
Each copy of PersonaЖ is hand-numbered and printed in two colours on our Risograph MZ 970 on 120gsm Olin Regular paper, with a 250gsm laminated cover wonderfully illustrated by the ridiculously talented Martoz. Risography is a manner of printing especially suited to small press and short run art books, on a machine that looks like photocopier, but in fact prints in separate colour layers, similar to silkscreen printing. This gives the work a lovely texture, with minor idiosyncrasies and imperfections that locates the result somewhere between mechanical printing and printing by hand.
A summary of the stories in PersonaЖ 2:
RewardsIn addition to digital and physical copies of PersonaЖ 1 and 2, we have some great higher reward tiers, including our first solo artist book from Sari Szanto, an original limited edition silkscreen print of Daria by Irina Troitskaya and our top reward, a personalised mini-PersonaЖ risograph zine, with 7 one-page stories with YOU as the main character!
Why are we asking for your help?
Primarily, we are asking for support to help with printing, binding and distributing PersonaЖ 2. Every reward level gives you great comics and/or art for your money, and as well building our audience and providing funds for us to help to cover the cost that we have put into buying our printer and producing these first books.
Sputnikat Press is a long-term project, and our PersonaЖ anthologies are just the start of a whole catalogue of books that we will publish by Russian and Russia-based artists. This will involve paying advances to our artists, working with designers for new book projects, buying new drums for our Risograph printer, (we currently have 6 colours, but we want to grow our collection, to give more printing options for future books) booking travel and participation for comics festivals around Europe and producing additional merchandise such as pins, prints, sketchbooks and t-shirts.
Sputnik Press is currently a personal investment project, driven by the desire to showcase the wonderful comics and illustration talent emerging in Moscow, and to provide a home for local illustrators to develop their voice as visual storytellers. This is not a profit-driven enterprise, but in order for Sputnikat to grow and become a long-term concern, we must eventually reach a point where we are self-funding. For that, it’s important that we are able to build up a decent-sized catalogue quickly, and if we are able to meet and exceed our goal for PersonaЖ 2, then we can reach this point quicker, and speed up production on our next round of books and products.
We currently have around a dozen books in various stages of development. Below are some images of our first solo artist books: Housewife: What a poor lesbian does when her girl goes away for the weekend by Sari Szanto; Welcome Home by Anna Sarukhanova and Arcaneville by Katya Dorokhina.
Thank you! / Спасибо!
Risks and challenges
All our pages are printed and we now just need to bind and finish the books. We have produced the book at Sputnikat HQ in Moscow on our very own MZ 970 Risograph printer. The pages look fantastic and we have seven wonderful comics stories, in a terrific variety of styles.
Also, this is our second time running the PersonaЖ collaborative project, so from an editorial standpoint, we have learned how to find a nice balance between the individual styles and storytelling concerns of each artist, and having a flow of narrative consistency with the characters across the week of stories.
As the the Russian postal service is somewhat unreliable, we will send all books and prints from our UK base in London. (Except those for postage within Russia)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
