The Sport Princess brand provides a new angle on princesses that is yet to be explored. The magical stories combine princess prettiness with rugged sports. There can be more to being a glamorous princess than just dressing up, having tea parties, and waiting for her prince to rescue her! She can also be outdoors, learn about sports, gain feminine strength, and feel empowered, while learning that it is best to be true to her self.
It doesn’t stop there: the Sport Princesses unite different nationalities, cultures, and world sports. The theme is consistent: Anything is possible. Limitations can be overcome. It doesn’t matter where you come from or what other people believe. Together, girls can change the world!
This kickstarter project launches the first three books in the series, in hardcover and eBook formats!
Bethany is a mother to two sprightly children and wife to a super outdoorsman, living in the country outside Austin, Texas. She grew up playing soccer, running races with her father, and watching him play baseball and basketball. For her birthday in 6th grade her father took her to her first NFL football game, the Kansas City Chiefs with Joe Montana, in the first section on the 50 yard line. She was hooked! Soon her bedroom was plastered with pictures of Steve Young and other football heroes that she began to follow and cheer for.
After an afternoon in 2009 where her 3 year old daughter, Mackayla, insisted on Bethany buying her a new princess book and doll in all its pink and frilly glory, the seed was planted that the world needed more princess options. Why weren’t there any Sport Princesses? Tennis shoes and cleats and mud mixed in with the glitter and pink and glamour? If most little girls are going to go through this princess phase, why not mix it with sports, too, so they can learn to love both early on?
The idea took immediate flight, and it wasn’t long before Mackayla traded in her plastic heels and Cinderella gown for hot pink soccer socks and cleats with her play dresses… requesting only ponytails and sport headbands… choosing to wear a football jersey to preschool with her skirt and asking for glittery football stripes under her eyes. Soon she was responding faster to the name “Jo” and having Bethany cut out Sport Princess paper dolls to play with every day!
By 2010, Bethany had the first stories written and had initial illustrations drafted up, and attended the London Book Fair, landing just hours before an Iceland volcano shut down all flights in and out! With a less than busy book fair, she was able to meet with publishers for input and was signed by Literary Agents from Ireland. In 2011 they signed with Murray Books in Australia, a brilliant publisher known for their “Think Out Of The Square” TOOTS brand of tactile gift books, mostly in sport ball shapes and textures. It was Murray Book’s first children’s book though, and what they discovered is the higher price point for making this tactile version did not leave room for any profit when taking orders from retail and book wholesalers. The price point for a children’s book needed to be lower, and the tactile gift format wasn’t going to work. They parted ways with Bethany retaining all rights and the remaining first run of the beautiful hot pink Soccer Princess tactile books.
Fast forward to 2017, and Bethany has watched Mackayla continue to grow into the epitome of a Sport Princess. Now 10 years old, she plays football on a boys’ team, soccer at recess, and is interested in starting Ice Hockey. She wants to work for the NFL when she grows up, and told Bethany she "hopes the rules are different in Heaven so girls can play football in the NFL!” She still plays with the Sport Princess trading cards and takes them to school, and wears football stripes under her eyes even to practice. She is brave and outgoing and inspired. It is time to share Sport Princess again, this time in a format that will work in our market, and be able to grow into also making dolls, jerseys, sport accessories, and more books in the series! We want to empower girls to be true to their self, active, adventurous and outdoorsy!
Kristin Abbott works as a freelance illustrator from her studio in California. Her favorite thing about her job is when children come to her house and see her illustrations and they say, “Ooh! I want to go there.” When she has time she also teaches illustration at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Long ago she graduated with a degree from Stanford University and later from the Academy of Art University as well.
Kristin joined the Sport Princess series in 2011 after the London Book Fair input, and has been a perfect fit ever since! She takes every note or sketch from Bethany and transforms it into something that takes our breath away! We can’t wait to showcase more of her work in the rest of the series.
