About this project
For 21 years now, Reel Loud has been a way for UCSB students to demonstrate their passion for filmmaking. We want to continue this tradition by simply allowing our student community to do what they do best: make fantastic films for a larger public upwards of 800 attendees. Reel Loud is unique in both concept and practice — it melds the tradition of silent films with the creativity of modern filmmakers and begs for a reinterpretation of a style that has lost popularity over time. As was the tradition in early theaters, Reel Loud requires that all films are shot on 16mm film stock and accompanied by live music, creating an ambiance that is unlike any other in contemporary cinema.
All we hope to do is to continue this tradition for filmmakers who currently attend UCSB and to do this, we need your help.
Less Money, More Problems
We're reaching out to the public due to a lack of funding from sources that have traditionally sponsored Reel Loud in past years. With the economy in its present state and the UC system fairing even worse, businesses and the UCSB student government have been less generous than previous years in helping Reel Loud get off the ground. While we are grateful for the donations we have gotten thus far, we still need to raise an ambitious amount of money to fund our event.
That's where you come in.
We welcome any donation you can afford, and we appreciate the supportive UCSB community that surrounds such a great tradition like Reel Loud. At the end of the day, Reel Loud is really a grassroots event and we're looking to the same community that provides all the creative backing to help us with the financial part as well. Whether you give $5 or $500, we're happy to have you on board.
Since Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing venture, we MUST reach $2000 in just a few days or we don't get a single dollar from this site.
Where Does It Go?
In short, the money raised via Kickstarter will go towards funding the festival itself. Some of it will cover event rentals including red carpet, lights and tables. Some of it will go towards purchasing materials to build props and decorations for the evening, and yet another portion will be saved for advertisements, ticket, poster and program printing costs. As of now, we have the venue secured but we need funding for the bulk of materials and resources that will turn a lecture hall into a film festival.
It is the 21st year of this prestigious festival. We welcome you to join us in mourning the Death of Cinema. Attend a wake you will never forget while enjoying some of UCSB's finest students collaborating to create an amazing event.
Thank you so much for all of your help in contributing to this year's Reel Loud festival. The support we've gotten from the public has already been fantastic — we just need that last push to secure funding for this death-defying event.
