Welcome to The Indies on Kickstarter! Please enjoy this wallpaper as thanks for stopping by!
Natalie Alastair doesn’t have any real problems. She has a stable technical career, a supportive social life, two cats and a childhood dream of becoming a professional artist. Unfortunately, she’s been chasing her dream so hard for so long that she’s burning out completely. Now, on the verge of giving up, Natalie must look to her closest creative friends to discover why art is too important to abandon.
Ryan and Whitney of The Grizzled Mighty held a (successful!!) fundraiser a while back for their second album. They're one of my favorite bands ever so I kicked it as hard as I could. As thanks, They wrote a song for The Indies!
Ladies and gentlemen, Draw My Lines by The Grizzled Mighty.
The Indies is a comic that was posted weekly on my blog from March 2010 to February 2013. The book is currently complete, compiled and ready for press. A successful Kickstarter will enable me to send it to Gorham Printing in Centralia, WA. The book will be 168 pages, hardcover bound. It can be read for free in its entirety on The Indies website. The font used is JerFont, which I made myself from my own handwriting. The retail price of the book will be $30.
Here's a rundown of the many fabulous kickbacks you can receive by helping me print The Indies!
Chip in a couple bucks and get a copy of my 2006 comic book, The Elves of Iax #1. It's an early work, but I still love it.
Jump in early and get your copy of The Indies at a modest financial reduction. Scientifically proven to be 46% more enjoyable than a worm.
No need to be fancy. Get a copy of The Indies for the good old-fashion retail price. This copy is the only one to come signed, doodled in with a gold star sticker, because you're a great person who deserves to feel special!
Get a copy of The Indies, plus a copy of The Elves of Iax #1 and a super secret surprise only available at this level! I absolutely swear on my honor that the secret surprise is neither adhesive nor fun. (I'm lying! It's totally stickers!)
Get a copy of The Indies and The Elves of Iax #1 plus my 2009 collaboration Studio Splurd's Papyrus and The Indies 11"x17" poster, all signed and personalized for good measure! Butter goose not included.
Wow. Such nice. Much kindness. Very thanks! Get the Smörgåsbord plus your name enshrined on The Indies Website along with a permanent link to a family-friendly website of your choosing!
You, sir or madam, are an individual of undiminished character. In addition to The Smörgåsbord and a thank-you link, Jer will draw an awesome high-resolution icon of your beautiful face for all your social media face-icon needs.
No joke here. Internet literacy is vital to indie arts. Come spend a day with Jer and have a cup of fancy tea as he walks you through making a website from scratch. You'll learn the basics of HTML, CSS and FTP, or if you already know that, you'll ramp up in either jQuery, SQL or Object Oriented PHP. Oh, and you'll get The Smörgåsbord, a thank-you link and a custom icon as well. Not your ordinary "spend the day with" reward! You are gonna need to be in Seattle, though...
Update: The Stickers!
My name is Jer. I drew my first comic in the third grade. It was about an easy-to-draw gelatinous martian named "Zero" with a backwards "Z" because "he liked it that way." Since then, I've spent a lifetime drawing comics and meeting others who do the same.
When I started The Indies in 2010, I was feeling nearly defeated. My art had never reached a quality I was proud of, my day job took all my energy, no one was ever willing to offer help or get excited about my plans and I felt trapped in a struggle nobody seemed able to understand. The Indies started as a practice project, a chance to develop my skills and vent my frustrations. I didn't realize I was beginning one hell of an adventure.
Over four years of writing The Indies, I escaped abusive friends, traveled the country to help people, indiscriminately collected a library of underground comics and helped organize SICAGA - the most incredible and fun gang of underground artists since the Dadaists.
The Indies is about what artists can do for each other. Alone, our voices are tiny but with friends we can make our message clearer, make our voices louder, make our journeys more fun. We can shoulder each other through those pesky real-life struggles and keep each other going until we finish our great works.
Just about anyone can be an artist and just about any artist can succeed on their own, but being an indie doesn't have to mean being alone. Sometimes you find someone who understands what it's like to be a struggling artist. Sometimes, you can understand them right back.
So here we are, at journey's end. I started alone, but I ended with a family I'll have for the rest of my life and a story to inspire other artists to never, ever quit.
I hope you enjoy The Indies. Thank you so much for stopping by.
Risks and challenges
I've already sent The Indies to Gorham Printing in Centralia, WA. I've ordered a very small print run on my own for Emerald City Comic Con. A successful Kickstarter will help me pay for all the production costs and let me order a larger print run so I can distribute the book nationally.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
