A concert of the music from horror cinema!
Imagine the shower scene from Psycho without Bernard Herrmann's ear piercing murder music. Or the shark attacks from Jaws without John Williams's ominous two note... duh dum.
They wouldn't be the same movies! Or, at the very least they wouldn't stick in our memories and nightmares with such fondness. It's obvious that the music of horror cinema is is engrained in to our culture and our minds. It's part of what makes watching scary movies so fun and lasting.
THIS IS A CONCERT TO CELEBRATE THE MUSIC OF HORROR MOVIES.
I have taken 13 of the most iconic, beautiful, and frightening themes ever composed for horror films and created custom arrangements to be played by a professional string quartet. I don't want to give away the whole concert, but here's a smattering: Psycho, Jaws, Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and The Exorcist.
HOROR IS AT HOME AT THE HISTORIC TOWER THEATRE.
We were lucky enough to book the historic Tower Theatre located in the 9th & 9th area of Salt Lake City, UT. This theatre is home to the midnight classic horror film showings every October, and where all the Sundance horror films are played each year.
The best part. ALL OF OUR TICKET SALES ARE GOING DIRECTLY TO SALT LAKE FILM SOCIETY. That's right. I'm not keeping a penny. I'm doing this concert because I love music and horror films. Salt Lake Film Society is an amazing organization, and we're lucky to have them. Giving them the ticket sales is just a small thank you for everything they do.
WHY STRING QUARTET?
Well... because string quartet is one of the COOLEST ensembles of all time! That's right. They aren't just for weddings and funerals. String quartets can play just about anything you can think of: rock, pop, country, Scottish pirate metal... ANYTHING! Check out the video above to hear previews from the concert. Luckily, lots of film music is written for orchestra so it translates very easily to string quartet. And by the way. I'd love to hire a full orchestra. Just give me enough money and I'll make it happen. For now though, we'll stick with quartet.
Also, just for flavor we're also adding in a little bit of PIANO AND BASS.
I'm very excited to be working with this group of musicians. They are all extremely talented!
Also, a little about me. I will be playing piano in the concert I'm a classically trained composer and pianist. I graduated from the University of Utah School of Music with a degree in music composition. Since then I have composed music for several short and feature films, video games, web content, and the concert hall. I have coordinated events like this before with great success. My last big event was the Utah Buddhist Arts Festivals. (my website: http://kaganbreitenbach.com/)
I have also hired some amazing local artists to put together new materials to be projected on the big screen while the music is being played. Check out some of their awesome work!
Where will this Kickstarter money go?
100% OF ALL MONEY RAISED WILL PAY FOR THE MUSICIANS AND ARTISTS. Yes indeed, every bit of money raised on Kickstarter will go directly to my musicians and artists. Enough said. I'm not pocketing any of this dough. It's not going to pay for fancy advertising or anything like that. Every dollar you send our way goes to the musicians and artists! Did I say that already?
If we get up to $1700, I have to be honest, I’m just going to pay my musicians more. They aren’t working for very much and they deserve the extra cash. They are putting together over an hour of music in two months while doing other full time work! The original goal is just the bare minimum. We can also use this money to pay for wireless stand lights to use in the theatre!
*This is an altered stretch goal that more fits with reality. At $2000 can get a beautiful multi-page custom program printed for the concert. Printing costs are not cheap, and this stretch goal gives you an awesome piece of physical art to remind you of the concert! I've got some other cool surprises lined up for this level! Looking forward to it :)
If we get to $2500 I'm going to approach more dancers to choreograph for the show. We only have 3 pieces so far with dancing in them, which is great, but I want more. Also, I will to hire someone to do some professional lighting and stage decor. At the Tower Theatre we pretty much have light, dark, and somewhere in between. With a bit more money I can hire a few stage designers that can really set the mood of the pieces. Maybe even a fog machine because who doesn’t love fog! At this level of donation we have a full event and not just a concert. Please help this happen!
My final stretch goal is $3000. If we get this far I will be ecstatic! What we’ll do at this level is do a studio recording of some of the pieces. It would take a couple days of studio time to make these recordings, so it wouldn't be cheap but it would be amazing to have! All kickstarter donors will get a free copy of these recordings. At this level of donation, a follow up concert the next year would be imminent!
*If we double the goal ($3000), I will dress up as Carrie and have a bucket of fake blood dumped on me.
Risks and challenges
The primary challenge for putting on a concert is making sure the music is of an artistic merit that won't make the audience fall asleep, walk out, or boo us, and instead leave the audience wanting for more.
To accomplish this, everything needs to be planned out, well rehearsed, and expertly executed.
I've spend months creating these arrangements. I created the scores myself. I have about 100 pages of sheet music that I've gone over several times to make sure the details are correct. Now we have a group of seasoned pros ready to play these pieces.
We are all well aware that problems can arise in the transition of paper to performance, which is why we are planning extensive rehearsals before the concert. All the details will be worked out, and problems will be addressed days before the concert even happens.
Our main commitment to our audience and our donors is to bring this music to life in a way that makes you remember hearing it for the first time. We also want this to be a new experience to make your Halloween festivities memorable.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
