Over the course of the last few days since I released my NYU GRAD ESSENTIAL FILM LIST I have been rightly told that my list did not have at least One Woman Filmmaker. This serious omission has been corrected. These Films will be added to my list.

Oh, and you've got The Hurt Locker but not Point Break? For shame.

Glad to see love for Sugar Cane Alley.

Partially directed by a woman but there's Gimme Shelter, in my opinion one of the best documentaries ever made. Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation is a great one. Maya Deren's Meshes of the Afternoon. Leni Riefenstahl's Olympia. Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis.

Hey guys & Girls: Did you know, that the FIRST director of a feature film (so we are not talking about incoming trains) in film history was a Woman? Yes, Alice Guy-Blaché! They say: She also directed the first feature film ever with an all afro-american cast! Actually, a very promissing film-documentary about her widely forgotten career (lots of films, first sound sync movie 1906, she had her own filmstudio in New Yersey!) is also in KICKSTARTER right now: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/benatural/be-natural-the-untold-story-of-alice-guy-blache….
It's beautiful! Take a look! And certainly: Keep this Spike Lee Joint rocking! Let there be blood!;-)

Improvement! Every list must have its limits, but could we push the diversity envelope a little further? Maybe Mira Nair, Salaam Bombay?

On behalf of all the women filmmakers struggling to make it in the boys club- THANKS for updating that list.

      I would also suggest
      JULIE TAYMOR ~ TITUS ~ 1999

    10. Creator Ricky Bardy on August 9, 2013

Varda's Cleo from 5 to 7 was also a very great film by a female director

Thanks for correcting the omission. This looks like a great list. I will have to check out Wertmuller's work, as I haven't seen a single one of her films.
