Of Animations and Directors

Posted by American McGee (Creator)

Back when we were developing Alice: Madness Returns I posted online a stop-motion animated short which caused a massive stir. The animation attracted a huge amount of attention, got people very excited about A:MR and caused more than a few marketing people to have aneurysms. You can see that video over on Vimeo.

Troy Morgan, the video's director and a long-time friend of mine, has produced a beautiful collection of darkly themed stop-motion animations over the years. You can check them out on his website. And today I'm happy to announce that he's agreed to contribute to the Alice: Otherlands project. His video(s) will live alongside contributions from other directors, in other styles.

One of the things that excites me most about the Otherlands project is that we'll be able to see creative expression from so many different directors, animators and writers. We'll see slick pre-rendered 3D animation similar to the trilogy of marketing animations produced by Shy the Sun, 2D animation in the style of the intro sequence of Alice:Madness Returns and stop motion contributions like Troy's. The possibilities are as limitless as the mental landscapes Alice will invade and explore. What a cool collection of videos we could end up with!

We'll have additional announcements about directors, musicians and animated styles in the coming days. This is just a small sample of what's to come.

A little housekeeping and promotion. As I write this we're at nearly 70kUSD (35% of our goal) and trending towards nearly 500kUSD (245%+ of our goal). This is wonderful and amazing! Thank you again, everyone, for helping support this mad dream. Together we're going to build a collection of Alice animations that make history and live on for years to come. I get chills just thinking about it!

A new poster being added today. After many requests we’re adding the Alice with Sunflowers Van Gogh image. It will be printed on the same canvas as our other poster and measure in some number of feet.

Just because we're being so awesome doesn't mean it's time to relax. Make some noise! Write blog posts, post Cheshire cat pics on Imgur, upload Bumby's favorite brownie recipe to Pinterest and shave your head with "Otherlands!" There are plenty of negative Tweedle Dee's and Dum's out there on the Internet talking about how we're not going to make this work. Go give them some Insane Children what-for!

I think Machinema with A:MR's engine would be pretty cool. Maybe Avatar style with live actors in mo-cap.

@Dill, you can purchase it through the Kickstarter as an add-on. Simply add the appropriate amount to your pledge; then, when the surveys come around at the end of the Kickstarter, indicate what the extra monies are for.

I really love the Troy Morgan and Shy The Sun videos. The 3D rendered video is beautiful, it really helps to share the amazing beauty and infernal atrocity of Alice's Wonderland, the two sides are perfectly rendered. For me the stop motion one is perfect to pass the feeling of madness, it has a huge shady and opressing feeling, simply viewing it gives you a really unpleasant feeling that in my opinion matches perfectly the state of mind of Alice.
Just viewing them gave me the urge to play Madness Returns again XD

Troy Morgan for the win! I must have a copy of this poster it combines my two childhood loves; Carroll and Van Gogh. I assume they'll be available via Spicy Art, yes?

Hey, sorry but how do I get hold of the Van Gogh Alice canvas/poster?

Oh, sorry :P Being half asleep, I didn't really read carefully the update. If the animations will be as gorgeous as the ones in A:MR....i'm sold even more than now :)) Guess I will have to save some more cash for the 60$ tiers :D

Would it be possible to put a 2D animations in the movie? Those in A:MR were absolutely brilliant.

I hope to see some rotoscoping, like in waking life!
Linklater has quite the mind for dreams within dreams.

Hey America, Im posting here because I can't comment on your facebook. Don't let the negativity discourage you man. I got your back. Don't really understand all the hate about A:MR. I have my own opinions about the game, but the artistic direction was everything I wanted in a new Alice game. Loved it! I also enjoyed Grimm. Godfather Death was my favorite episode! Hope this kickstarter makes it big for the film rights. Been paying attention to rumors about the Alice film based on your work for years. Its very saddening like most video game to Hollywood adaptations that it could never get off the ground. Hope you reach your post kickstarter goals. My childhood dream would come true to finally see your rendition of Alice on the silver screen.

American, I don't know if you have ever checked out any Alice fan fiction based on your game on fanfiction.net. If you haven't you should. There are lots of them and some are really really good too.

Just checked right now, there are 628 entries based on your game. http://www.fanfiction.net/game/American-McGee-s-Alice/

Love the 3D animation by Shy the Sun, it is spectacular and I would love to see the Alice shorts rendered like that. I also like the 2d intro sequence in the AMR games, and if a short was done in that fashion i think it would work out really well (and bring nostalgia back to AMR). Stop motion on the other hand (like the Alice one you linked) just freaks me out.. nightmares right there >.<

I personally enjoy the pre-rendered 3D animation by Shy the Sun the most. I enjoyed stop motion in Coraline and ParaNorman, but out of those two ParaNorman fit stop motion better. So I'm not sure how I feel with stop motion and Alice.

I love stop motion. So excited to see that included. :D
