Rendered in beautiful 3D animation, Alice enters the "Otherlands" of London's most beautiful and terrifying minds.
3,389 backers pledged $222,377 to help bring this project to life.

July and the Final Stretch

Posted by American McGee (Creator)

Dear Insane Children,

"Are we there yet?!" Almost there! The animations are complete and the disc factory has been reserved. We're just waiting on Ed to put finishing touches on the DVD/Blu-Ray menus. Don't blame him for being slow - he has two good excuses for not yet finishing: First, he's just moved house from Shanghai to New York (just in time for the 4th of July). More critically though, *I* screwed up and gave him an incomplete list of backer names for the credits! Oops :(

As soon as the menus and backer credits are done... off to the factory with the DVDs and Blu-Rays! (Hey, Ed... psst... hurry, the children are getting impatient!) ;)

DVD Box Art (Yes, there's other art for Blu-Ray)
DVD Box Art (Yes, there's other art for Blu-Ray)

Last update caused a bit of stir with the art style in Ed's animation of Alice's adventure through the mind of Jules Verne. While everyone is certainly entitled to their opinions on art (of course!) it's also worth keeping in mind (pun intended) that each journey into a new mind would-could-should be represented in an art style fitting the narrative and tone of that particular mind.

Anime-style Alice is, to my mind, unique, fun, and well worth exploring. She even brought to life a range of new dresses, which I hope we'll see make their way into the cos-play community...

And that's the beauty of Otherlands. Each mind is a different expression of materials and influences. A chance for a director or artist to bring a fresh perspective to Alice's world. Troy's stop-motion adventure into the mind of Wagner plays in stark contrast to the anime style of Verne's mind:

My only hope is we're given an opportunity to explore even more styles throughout a wide range of other minds. What I wouldn't give to see all these minds opened for exploration on a VR platform like Oculus! Ahem, EA?

Beyond the animations, serious progress is being made on the "Art of" book. Alex says, "...all is going according to schedule. I'm on track, will be working and polishing it off this week/weekend. Should have no problems supplying a complete (or near complete) proof for next week. (pending Ed's copy and the Bio's at the back). "

We have another test-print of the book being made this week. I'll send along pictures of that as soon as it's delivered from the factory.

Last, but certainly not least, is the Otherlands Storyboard poster, which a handful of backers will receive. (Special thanks to backer Matthew for his input on the design and content on this reward).

That's it for the July update. As always, your comments are questions are welcome in the feedback below.

CRITICAL REMINDER: As we are getting very close to shipping items, please take a moment to check your profile on BackerKit to ensure we have your current address and PHONE NUMBER. I cannot stress how important it is you include a phone number with your contact details. Here's the link:

Does the art book include more details about the new dresses aside from the images included above?
I am looking to bring one of the new designs to life for a future costume project!

is there a way to update shipping addresses?

    3. Milana Stanic on

Thank you for the update. I cannot wait for the films to be available for download. Also I have only just now seen that there is an anime alice present, kudos on that I am an anime fan and cannot understan why would anyone complain on that. But hey I guess they are just excited as I am to see it asap and got a little impatient. Great job, keep it up.

It's odd to me that an art style caused such violent backlash. After reading the petition, it's pretty clear to me that every argument they put forth is just a weak facade around the fact that they have an extreme dislike for anime. I can understand the disappointment when the artistic direction goes in a direction counter to your preferences. I felt the same disappointment when I learned the 'Zone of the Enders: The Second Runner' would be going with cel shaded graphics, but it didn't lead me to cancel my preorder and renounce my love for the series. My love for the series remained despite worry that the art style would detract from my enjoyment. (In the end it came out gorgeous, but I digress.)

I forget my overall point, but I wanted to through in the fact that the notion of seeing Alice in an anime style has only gotten me more hyped for this release. I hope the love of your diehard fans can cancel out some of the hate from these petitioners.

Thank you, for your help with the poster design! :)

Tthe petition creators and people signing the petition are not backers. If they were, or if they had legitimate complaints about the campaign and rewards, they could just post here and we'd all talk about it.

I appreciate the support and kindness you and other backers have shown over the course of the project. Very happy that we'll be sending out more physical rewards soon. And hope everyone is pleased with the results.

      Hey American,

Thanks for the shout out! I am glad to have had the opportunity to help out! I hope all the other backers at the storyboard level are just as excited as I am for the wonderful piece of artwork Alex was able to produce.

I am very sorry to hear about a petition from our very own backer community. It's bad enough that people outside of the Otherlands campaign are spewing hate and disappointment without even understanding the true intent of this project. Especially without seeing the final product!

"The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance."

In the end, production took way longer than expected, but given the budget, I think you, and everyone else involved, delivered something I will cherish and be proud to own. Your fans are super excited, and I can't wait to watch these animations for the first time!

    7. Jacob McClenny on

I guess it's too late to add on a Blu-ray? I've always been disappointed that I couldn't afford to add it on during the campaign.

    8. Matotron on

I don't know what the petition is on about. I like Anime.

    9. Daniel on

The detractor's understanding of art costs shows them as a little naive. It is sad how much had to go on the rights though. If only each subsequent animation had been a stretch goal, nobody would have been able to complain.

BUT on better topics, the stop motion screens look utterly amazing and disturbing (in a good way!), and while I've never watched much in the anime style, doesn't she just look cute as a button. I look forward to seeing that too.

    10. Kaze Trinidad on

I'm sorry they even created one. I think it was really rude and an objection to all the ideas that have been presented throughout this campaign, but I thought if you didn't know it would get worse. Thank you for responding to it so quickly.

    11. American McGee 3-time creator on

@Kaze, that petition is a real kick in the teeth. I cannot fully express how angry it makes me to see people willfully distort the truth just to attack an art style they don't agree with. Just awful.

Anyway, here's my (somewhat angry) response to the whole pack of lies:

This is looking really great! The anime-style is really neat too

I've been looking forward to seeing this, but suddenly i'm superexcited about it. Looks like it's going to be really amazing.

    15. Kaze Trinidad on

I am super excited! But as a heads some people are not and started a petition. I wish you could comment on them without signing or I would give them a piece of my mind. The new art looks stunning!I can't wait to watch, also thank you for reminding us to check our phone numbers.

    16. Claudia Tinúviel on

@American How much will you declare the packages when you send it? Because I will have to pay 60% of it to the customs and 60% of the full value of my pledge will hurt a lot in my pocket

And the new dresses are lovely <3

actually, i think a simple way is via YouTube + Google Cardboard. i just happened to chance on this video. FF towards the middle and you can see how VR is being utilised. Works on YouTube apps or even PC browsers.

    19. JagGentlemann on

Uf, thanks for remind people about confirming their shipping address, mine was very wrong. Two numbers were swaped and it didn't have the town name.

    20. Donovan Bell on

@American - I've sent a message across to have my option changes from blu-ray to DVD, it's not too late is it?

    21. American McGee 3-time creator on

@Laszlo, Uncertain what you mean by "second batch" of art books. There is only what's been made for the KS campaign - books that will be sent to backers as rewards. Nothing beyond that.

    22. American McGee 3-time creator on

@Lucian, if we were able to offer them for sale, it would be through a different channel. The problem is not *where* we sell them, it's simply IF we can sell them. The agreement we have only allowed us to manufacture/sell physical items as rewards or give-aways. We cannot sell them beyond the KS campaign. That's why I've recently attached them as free give-aways for purchase of items at Mysterious. If we can find other ways to do that sort of thing in the future, I'll be sure to let you know.

    23. Lucian Cruor on

Oooh, that DVD art is beautiful! I really hope that the future sees an option of unsigned ones for sale, perhaps at Mysterious? :D

    24. Laszlo Ivanyi on

Hohoo :D Good to see it coming together.

Still, is there any news about the second batch (?) of the hardcopy "Art of" book? It seems I cannot order it via Backer kit anymore and I'd really like to get that..

    25. Sarah Larrabee on

So excited, can't wait to watch this collection of art masterpieces.
