The origins of the Spherificator
The Imperial Spherificator is a project years in the making!
We run a small company in Montreal, Quebec, Canada which manufactures a seaweed based caviar substitute called Kelp Caviar. The manufacturing basis of this product line is the same as the one used by chefs all over the world in the process of Spherification, where Alginate, a seaweed extract, is mixed with Calcium to form a caviar, or pearl-like shape.
For years, chefs, foodies, bakers, bartenders and home cooks have been asking us to find a way to down size our caviar substitute-making machine for household and professional use. After months of R&D, we are ready to introduce to the world the only pearl and caviar handheld forming device: the IMPERIAL SPHERIFICATOR.
About this Project
Once we downsized our technology into a household handheld device for everyone to enjoy at home, we built a prototype to show the world how it works and what can be produced with it. Simply put, the Spherificator can be used to make everything from breakfast to dinner, and even dessert and drinks, more exciting. The Spherificator has no limitations - what you do with it is up to your imagination and creativity.
We now have a fully functional prototype and have put it through its paces. We are ready to move forward with production, but need your backing to help us fund the molds and the tooling.

Spherification is the culinary process of shaping a liquid into spheres that visually and texturally resemble caviar or roe. With the Spherificator, you will be able to shape almost any item in your kitchen into a pearl/caviar. Whether using raw ingredients (ideal) or commercially available products, the rule of thumb in spherification is to avoid citric acids and ingredients with high acidity levels at all costs. If a product is highly acidic (like tomatoes, Coca Cola, or Tabasco sauce for example), you can dilute the original product to cut the acidity and add a little extra seaweed extract - aka Alginate. Every Spherificator comes with a recipe and quick tip booklet to help you get started. Our website will also have plenty of fun recipes, ideas and tips by delivery date.
Risks and challenges
1. This is a brand new product in the global market and we know that "tons of people want one", but unfortunately that is not a quantifiable order. We hope after two weeks of running our project on Kickstarter it will give us a clear idea of how many Spherificators to order in our first production run.
2. We will ship on a first ordered first delivered priority and will give 100% priority to Kickstarter backers. YOU ARE OUR PRIORITY! We will ensure you receive your Spherificator before the holiday season.
3. We will be shipping globally, we just have to make sure every destination receives the right 6V DC wall plug. To that end, we'll send out a survey after the Kickstarter closes, to ensure you get the right plug!
