A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Speedo Minder comprises a smart-phone navigation based App and a vibrating Device the size of a USB thumb drive.
The Speedo Minder app can be configured to your chosen 'Over-the-Speed-limit' threshold for warnings and to your chosen ‘repeat’ warning frequency.
I set my 'Over-Speed' to around +5 Mph over the speed limit, and to repeat every 8 - 10 seconds . . . until I slow down.
The device vibrates for 0.2 seconds . . . which makes you lift your foot off the gas.
Speedo Minder options allows for the user to receive persistent repeat warnings every few seconds until you drop to your set Over-Speed.
This Speed Minding app/device has changed my driving habits from a lead-foot with speedometer anxiety . . . to an 'eyes-on-the-road' focused driver.
Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) is growing in acceptance and innovation. Haptic feedback systems are likewise becoming an integral part of many European designed cars.
The Speedo Minder system is part of both those worlds.

Why are we on Kickstarter?
We decided the best way to launch our product world-wide was crowd-funding. We will be using the funds raised to pay for the poly-carbonate housing injection molds, aluminum stamping, components and PCB manufacturing. Thanks for getting us off the ground!
Speedo Minder is a GPS based App and Bluetooth Low Energy – BLE - warning Device.
• How does Speedo Minder work?
Speedo Minder uses Bluetooth Low Energy to connect your smart phone with the App to deliver vehicle speed and fixed camera data Haptic alerts via the BLE device.
• How big is it?
The Speedo Minder device is 2.4" x 1.2" x 0.75" (~60mm x 30mm x 20mm)
• Does it work in my country?
We use HERE.com (originally Nokia Maps) for our speed limit and speed camera API database. We will provide free updates via the app store and play store. HERE.com provides maps and speed limit/speed camera API data for over 42 countries. See the full list above.
• How long does the battery last?
We have optimized the battery life to last as long as possible. We are expecting the two AAA batteries to last up to two years. With AAA’s we get the most bang for size. The device delivers a single 0.20 second ‘buzz’ for over-speed alerts and a double 0.10 second buzz for Speed Traps. We have tested the buzzer to over 150,000 x 0.20 second vibration events. But rest assured your SpeedoMinder device has easy access to replace the batteries.
• How can Speedo Minder have such a long battery life?
The Speedo Minder Device has a sleep function that saves battery life until it is needed. When your smart phone comes within range of the Device, the auto-pairing wakes the device to start saving you money and worry!
• How many Speedo Minders can I have to one smart phone?
Each smart phone will be able to connect to a maximum of 1 Speedo Minder Device.
• How do I attach my Speedo Minder to a surface?
Speedo Minder comes with a sticky pad so you can wrap/stick it to any surface. If you’re like me and want to secure the device to your gas pedal, just use the sticky pad to ‘wrap’ it onto the pedal stem. Be careful to determine if you have achieved a secure attachment. We recommend adding the use of zip ties through the zip tie channels for additional security. If the pad gets dirty, just wash it with soap and it will be as good as new. With the batteries located on the base of the housing you'll be able to magnetically mount the device anywhere you like.
• Should I mount it to my motorcycle?
The best option for motorcyclists is to keep the BLE Device on your key-ring and simply detach and pop it in your pocket when you’re riding. With your smart phone in your pocket (with clear access to the sky for GPS) the app will auto-pair with the device and start working. The device is designed to stay asleep until it is both movement activated and in Bluetooth signal proximity to your phone.
• What phones does it work on?
Speedo Minder will work on iOS (iPhone 5, 6, 7 & 8) and Android 6.0.1 onward.
• Do I have to connect my phone every time?
No! Once you have paired your Speedo Minder with your smart phone the first time, it will remember next time. We have built in a range finder and movement activation module to keep the Device and App both asleep until they are both in range AND moving. 100% hands-free!
• Aren't there apps that already do this?
No !! . . . there are no other apps that can provide Haptic Feedback Warnings for ‘over-speed’ and ‘speed cameras’ the same as Speedo Minder does through a secondary device.
Some navigation apps will provide an audio/visual alert for speed limits and speed cameras, but, no-one has our unique combination of user configured ‘Over-Speed’ threshold AND ‘Repeat-Alert' frequency options that come to you as Haptic Feedback. Our system is not only hands-free and non distracting, it is compact, portable and critically, persistent with the warnings. The only way to beat the cameras is to stay under the limit!!
• What about radar detectors or GPS units?
Radar detectors are illegal in many countries. GPS and Satellite Navigation units often will only provide a single audio/visual alert that is easily missed or ignored. Speedo Minder offers a solution that is both inexpensive and legal.
• What about my privacy?
Your smart phone’s GPS module uses the HERE.com offline maps within the app to determine your local speed limit and proximity to speed cameras. We do not collect information from you other than as necessary for normal app downloads. We do need to be able to send you mapping data updates via the app itself.
• Can I still use Speedo Minder if I have other Bluetooth connected devices?
Yes you can! Speedo Minder uses Bluetooth Low Energy system which does not interfere with your smart watch, or music or the car's Bluetooth hands-free phone use.
Some relevant facts:
• Over-Speed warning/alert SatNavs and apps are at best distracting or at worst easily ignored, easily disabled or completely unnoticeable.
• Driving is inherently dangerous.
• You need all your powers of sight and sound focused on the road in front of you.
• Distractions are everywhere.
• Drivers spend more time looking at their speedometer than looking at the road.
• Over-Speed thresholds are getting lower and lower as governments and road safety bodies make creeping over a massive transgression.
• Safety (Speed) Cameras are ‘everywhere’!
• Satellite Navigation devices and apps can ONLY deliver audio and/or visual alerts that are often borderline inaudible, invisible, infrequent, inefficient, inadequate or simply too easily ignored.
• At the other end of the scale they are dangerously distracting or turned off.
• The key problem facing drivers is how to monitor your Over-Speed status without getting distracted by things that take your attention 'away' from the road..
• Drivers should be concentrating on the road in front of them not worrying about checking the speedometer every few seconds because going even just a few Mph over the speed limit can cost a fortune and possibly your license.
• Every driver who, like me, needs reading glasses to see the speedometer but cannot have them on whilst driving. To accurately try to focus my eyes on an analogue speedometer (with my eyes distracted away from the road) takes far too long.
• Every driver who has ever had a Speeding Ticket will benefit from Speedo Minder's assistance.
• Learner drivers who NEED to slow down 'need' a co-pilot.
• Young Male Drivers are over-represented in road trauma statistics.
• Motor Cycle riders who need assistance to monitor their speed, whilst keeping their eyes and ears on the road.

Risks and challenges – Speedo Minder
Three years of research and development, prototyping, 3D printed housings, testing and measuring and now using (for many months on the back of my gas pedal) has now culminated in the fully functional BLE device and app.
We have some truly awesome people on the team. Two Electronics Engineers, an Aerospace Engineer plus hardware/firmware/software experts as well.
We have the road mapping data license for speed limits and speed cameras fully developed within the app.
We are all committed to successfully bringing this project into full production. We are geared up with the CAD for the device housing, the electronics and PCB designed and both the iOS and Android apps fully developed.
There's always the possibility of an unknown factor that can delay the process, however we believe we have mitigated that risk with every perceivable issue considered.
Everything that needed testing to have 100% confidence in the system has been completed. The electronic components are well known, well respected with excellent performance. We have not had to reinvent the wheel with this project; we’re just putting it together in a never before thought of way . . . to enhance your driving experience.
Speedo Minder was built to work for you.
The device contains components that come from different suppliers and there is always the risk of not receiving the right components on time. If any of these suppliers have a change in lead time or short supply, it will delay production on our end. We will keep all of you in the loop.
We will continue to improve and develop the Speedo Minder system, with updates to the software and manufacturing Quality Assurance.
Quality takes time and attention to get it right so your experience is excellent right out of the box.
There is always the risk of product getting stuck at customs. However there is nothing unusual in what we are producing nor shipping so this is not expected to create delays.
After more than two years of research and development, the risks at this stage are minimal.
We have the Bluetooth Low Energy Device fully developed, pairing with the app that now incorporates Speed Limit and Speed Camera API data for 44 countries from our partner, HERE.com Mapping.
The device housing CAD has been completed and 3D printed by a Stratasys printer at the Flinder's University's NVI facility at Tonsley, South Australia.
