The Eyes of the Setting Sun
Yezeletta wasn't born in the traditional sense. She's a creation - a beautiful, exotic creation in the way the scientists wanted her to be. Her intelligence knows no bounds, and her sentient mind is still struck by youthful wonder by the world around her. She also has no desire to be the perfect slave she was built to be. For years she has been weaving a tangled web for freedom. She has KILLED to get it. When her web catches a snag, it looks like she may be caught in another web woven by someone else.
The book, the project (updated 5-6-2016)
The Eyes of the Setting Sun is a high-tech science fiction written by Christian Madsen. This is Christian Madsen's debut novel, and we here at the Writers of the Apocalypse are thrilled to help him get out there for you to read.
Our projected release date is July 4! Backers - if all goes according to plan - will get an "advance copy" as we hope to mail your copies early!
5-24-2016 - The Goodreads poll winner has been chosen! Stacy will be receiving a hardbound copy of the book and small poster of the cover! Way to go, Stacy!
5-6-2016 - Three early copies arrived today, all in the name of correcting mistakes and making things purtier! (And sending to review.) They're 6x9 with a gorgeous wrap around cover, if I do say so myself. Here is what they look like so far for the curious of the curious!
This is your chance to get involved with the production of a great book in a way only readers can do. Show Christian your support and you'll get one of the following things:
- The hard copy first edition of the book with a special Kickstarter-only bookplate inside the cover
- Ebook (sorry, these do not have bookplates)
- A small poster of the cover art
- Both together
A taste of the book: the opening bits. An excerpt for your enjoyment:
C'mon, doll," he said, his baritone voice cajoling, nagging, insistent. "It's time to go back."
He stepped forward on the greasy surface. A single step.
She couldn't step back. Can't, she thought. The heel of her foot, her left, touched the wet gray wall behind her.
His expression was of a dissatisfied owner. Or the owner's agent.
"Roger sent me."
The damp grayness around her, gray like her master, her overlord,—no more!—surrounded her on three sides. The only exit was through the man before her. She looked up, down, to the sides, Trapped! the thought entered, an animal trapped in a huge corner filled with car carcasses, decaying branches. Junk.
The run had been long, from a home she couldn't remember very well to this meeting. With this one.
I could just charge him, knock him over. A part of her hadn't given over to panic. She clung to that, now.
Behind him, lights from the street turned him into a black apparition delineated by a bright outline. His solid dark shadow covered her, a ghostly rapist.
There was a sharp sound from the street. He paid it no attention, his gaze fixed on her.
... So you should know... Not your grandma's science fiction...
The Eyes of the Setting Sun contains a lot of adult content. It's got car chases, chases by bad guys, and mental issue chases. It also has sexual content. You have been warned!
Another way to get involved
Speaking of posters and cover art, we are currently running a poll at Goodreads to let you, the reader, choose what it shall be. Wanna cast your vote? Edit: Stacy won! The cover is chosen!
