Spartickes Dyes was started in August 2012 for two reasons: 1. I had just attended my first fiber retreat (SSK 2012) here in Nashville, TN, and I knew that I wanted fiber to become an even bigger part of my life, and 2. I lost my teaching job, for the second time in two years.
The name Spartickes Dyes is a play on words--Spartacus (the gladiator movie/tv show) combined with our last name, Ickes. I changed history by saying Spartickes Dyes instead of DIES, because color makes the world a better place!
I hand dye unique yarn colorways-inspired by pop culture: movies, tv shows, books, or even music. I also use a professional serger, handed down to me from my mom, to sew bags to store fiber projects. They are good for storing other things too-my kids use them as lunch bags.
When I first opened, I was overwhelmed by the support of my fiber friends! I have had a very successful 3 months, and I would love to be able to introduce two new series of yarns and fiber to Spartickes Dyes and sell them at The Middle Tennessee Fiber Festival in Dickson, TN on May 24th and 25th, 2013. I have been dreaming up colorways, but I don't have any "naked yarn" or "naked fiber" to put all the colors on. I am launching this kickstarter project so that I will be able to offer sock weight, worsted weight, aran weight, chunky weight, and roving in the two new themes, which are of course based on pop culture: Winnie the Pooh and Firefly. I plan on offering two different yarn/fiber and bag clubs in the beginning months of 2013 which feature these two new themes. Although the specific yarn and fiber colorways are exclusive to the club, I will be offering different colorways based on Winnie the Pooh and Firefly in the shop as well.
The kickstarter project goal ends on my 36th birthday. Please help this day to be an amazing celebration! If I am able to raise more money than the $1,200 goal, I will put that money towards storage shelves, a new ball winder (mine is broken, so I do it all by hand!) a better skein winder, and entry fee to the Tennessee Fiber Festival in Dickson, TN.
Thank you for considering backing my project!!
Risks and challenges
I have worked hard to find generous rewards that will give something of value to my contributors while still enabling me to reach my project goal.
I am offering a lot of rewards that will take time to make, as well as stocking up dyed fiber and sewing bags for sale in the shop. I am confident that I will be able to fulfill the order. I've allowed myself plenty of time, and I am not above enlisting the help of my family. In fact, they are quite used to it!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
