How's Candle doing?

Hey there, long time no see! It's time for the next big campaign Update. We've been super-busy with the development and now we have really big news for you.

First public appearance

We really wanted to have this posted by October, but some things happened that prevented us from having the proper spare time to write it. As some of you may already know, we attended last week to Madrid Games Week, Spain's largest videogame expo, and players were able to play the very first (Alpha) demo of Candle. It was the first time we ever attended such an event, and we really wanted to bring the best demo we could make, so we worked against time to have an early playable version of the game. But the good news is that everyone enjoyed the game a lot! Both the ones who already knew about it and those who first heard about it right there.

How about my rewards!?

We're proud to announce that the incredible guys at Humble Bundle will be handling all your digital rewards (digital copies of the game, OST, artbook and so). All you will need to do is setup an account on their site and follow the steps below to get your unique redeem links. This way, you will get the DRM-Free version and the Steam key version of the game, as well as any other digital item you may have backed for, and it will be linked forever to your Humble account. This allows us to deliver your rewards in a faster, safer, better way. And for those who pledged for a WiiU version, fear not! We will have a similar solution for you soon (in fact, we will sure also end up giving you the eShop keys via Humble Bundle). Here's the process:

You can receive your download page for your Candle digital rewards by going to and entering your email address (the one you used for backing, that is, your KS account). Once you have done this you should receive an email containing the download page link. Note that this will only guarantee that you will get your rewards when we make them - they're not ready yet. Please let us know if you experience any trouble!

Wait, there's still more?

Of course! The guys at Humble Bundle are not only helping us with the digital rewards, they're also helping us selling Candle on our website through their Humble Store widget. Now, everyone who missed the campaign will be able to pre-purchase the game at a special discount price using PayPal or Amazon Payments as any other regular Humble Store item. Every copy of the game will give us a little boost on our budget, and we will add every dollar that comes from those sales to our Kickstarter funds. Help us spread the word so all those who weren't able to back the game on Kickstarter can do it now on

Time to talk about a release date then

This is the hardest part of the post, although we're sure you will understand what we're about to tell you. This is the first time we're making a full, international videogame and we didn't see some things coming. We are doing very good so far, we have a very big piece of game done, you saw it already running on Wii U, and we even had Candle playable on an expo that was flooded by 50k+ people. But our handmade process is being slower than we expected. We are pushing everything as hard as we can to have it done as soon as possible, but we're afraid that Candle won't be out until this Spring, a few months after the initial scheduled release date.

But the best part is that we are saving as much as we can from our KS funds and we're only spending the necessary to pay the bills, software licenses, etc. This means that we still have 20.000€, half your budget, left to keep working a few extra months. Of course, this also means that, if we get enough extra funding via the Humble widget pre-orders, we will expand the game to the new contents of the next stretch goals, although we are most definitely adding some new content due to this extra time (some extra zones and puzzles). We are working hard 24/7 to make Candle the best game we can and to deliver you a full, long, polished experience.

Also, 2 more professionals have joined the crew. Teku Studios now has a dedicated particles FX artist and a sound designer. Candle now looks and sounds better than ever.

We will post another update soon showing you new gameplay, some words concerning the narrator voice for the game and maybe even the very first Candle trailer. Stay tuned!

One day I'll back a KS video game project that accurately estimates development time. And then I'll fall down dead from shock. :P

Glad the game is going so well, and thanks for the update!

Oh glad to hear a playable demos version debuted so well. Yay! That's good solid progress.

I think most people understand how impossible it is to project a solid timeline for a project of this sort. If you run over the expected "due date" that's fine, so long as you keep your backers informed. I think you'll find people are reasonable and quite accepting of delays, as long as they are kept in the know. Leave people hanging and that's when people start to wonder and get bothered.

Thanks for keeping us posted on your progress and schedule. I agree with the other comments below -- though I'm really eager to play, I'd rather the game be done right.

@Robert Anyway, those who backed for the $15 pledge on Kickstarter will get the exclusive Concept Comic and the wallpaper, both KS exclusive rewards (players who pre-order it on our website only get the game). We think that's a nice way to add some extra value to your pledges.

    5. Teku Studios Creator on November 19, 2013

@Robert Yeah, we are aware of that :( however we thought it could be dishonest for those who preordered it now (since it is not the final price), but we wanted to somehow still mantain our crowdfunding promise, and that's why the early bird pledge here was cheaper than that.

It's very hard to correctly measure these things.

Thanks for the update! Looks like some really cool stuff is going on! I might have suggested waiting to put up the preorder for sale at a discount. At $12 to pre-order, that means almost 500 backers paid more to help get the game to where it is now, but others can preorder it for cheaper...

    8. Teku Studios Creator on November 19, 2013

@Jesús Pues ya te vale, porque el stand era bien vistoso y Candle estuvo todos los días con demo jugable ;D

No me j-, ¡pero si no os ví! :( Me habría gustado saludaros (y daros la enhorabuena) en persona...

Just as Peter said: no hurry. Better to wait some more months than get a game full of bugs. :-)

    11. Teku Studios Creator on November 19, 2013

Thank you for being so understanding. We were scared to announce that little delay, but I'm glad you get it's for the best (we're saving as much money as we can from the KickStarter funds).

      Cheers :)

Thanks for this great update. No rush, i like quality games with eye for detail, so the extra months aren't a problem. quality above all. That's why i also don't always get things done in the time-schedule at first. If it is good for the end result it's good for your wallet. More people wanting your game. Keep up. Don't overwork yourself. Cheers.
