We are Spanglish, a group of four friends from Puerto Rico that all live in Raleigh, North Carolina, and are excited to bring inspired Puerto Rican food to our community!
Living in North Carolina, we've fallen in love with the local cuisine, but were missing a slice of home that would warm our hearts (and our bellies). We found solace in several local spots for our traditional food fix, but then it dawned on us... not many people know what Puerto Rican food is! This led us to the idea that instead of having to hunt for Puerto Rican food, we should bring our food to you!
We want the community to experience the flavors that always make us relive sitting at our mothers' dining table and devouring amazing food. The problem? Our abuelas never measured anything! It's like they were allergic to measuring cups! So, we spent months to get the right measurements that would allow us to make consistently flavorful food.... and now we got it right! Abuela would be so proud!
We took inspiration in local dishes when we were making our foods, understanding that the Carolinian palate is just about as particular as Puerto Ricans are when it comes to flavors. So we wanted to make sure we welcomed everyone to our culture, and we sat around and wrote recipes, actually writing them in Spanish and English, and as such, Spanglish was born!
So... now that the food is nailed down in its awesome awesomeness, we've decided to start a food truck! What better way to bring the food directly to our compadres than a truck? I mean, it has wheels, right?
So, let's dance some salsa, and talk about where we are:
In the last few months, we spent time finding honestly-sourced ingredients, contacting suppliers that can meet our standards of quality and flavors. We partnered with some local NC farms to source some of our ingredients, as well as working with local distributors for access to the freshest ingredients. Even with all this work, and the dance we had to learn to navigate regulations, we're still committed to this being successful. We even took it as far as signing up for a food truck class at the local community college! If we can sit through class for hours after a full workday, we're in it for the long haul.
Here's another huge step... We already own a truck with half of a kitchen! We have it in our possession and it's presently getting retrofit at a local shop to bring it to the highest standards of kitchen and food safety. It took throwing some financial ninja stars to make it work, but this is the biggest step in this process and what we feel can lead us to success. We have a lot of skin in the game, and we just need you to give us a push to make it to the finish line.
Some things we're missing:
- Food truck design and wrap (very expensive!)
- Commercial refrigeration (fridge, freezer)
- Specialty appliances (Sandwich presses, heat lamps)
- Cooking equipment (pots, pans, fryer baskets, plating, utensils, food warmers)
- Food service materials (ingredients, spices)
- Food transportation equipment
- A generator (we need more power!)
- Health and Fire Safety equipment (extinguishers, first aid, sanitation)
- Marketing!!!! People have to know about us!
- POS System
Please help us achieve this goal. We're almost there, we just need a push over the top!

Risks and challenges
Every project could potentially encounter unexpected obstacles (we hope it doesn’t come up, but it happens!). This project is a passion of ours, but we have to understand there can always be challenges.
There could be unexpected delays due to the retrofit build, the design and wrap, not to mention any delays due to permitting. Even so, we have so much skin in the game, that we can't see ourselves not launching.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
