Hi, I’m Helen – Founder & Inventor of the Spand-Ice™ Revive Tank. My team and I have designed an innovative wearable solution for on-the-go back pain relief. Our Revive Tank provides an easy and effective way to help you manage your back inflammation and pain without taking time out of your day.
How the Spand-Ice Revive Tank was born:
Five years ago, I started to dream up a solution to a problem I was having: making time to manage my back pain while balancing a busy life.
I’ve suffered from back pain for as long I can remember. At one point, my back inflammation was so intense that after sitting for 20 minutes, I would get shooting pains down my legs. After years of physical therapy, cortisone shots, and a stomach ulcer (caused by too much pain medication), I learned that icing my lower back after any activity reduced my inflammation and relieved my pain.
Icing and heating (thermal therapy) can be very challenging to apply effectively. It's messy, uncomfortable, hard to maintain the right temperatures, and you have to sit still. I've found it nearly impossible to do all of this, and having to sit still or lie down was a deal breaker.
I searched high and low for something that could give me thermal back pain relief while moving around, without slowing me down from living my life. I was frustrated and surprised by the lack of available solutions out there, especially given that back pain is more common than I thought: Eighty percent of the population will experience a back problem at some point in their life.
So, I set out to create a garment combining the best elements of current therapy products into a versatile, flexible and mobile design. My mission was to develop a wearable ice and heat solution with these features:
- Effective icing and heating of low and mid back.
- Holds therapy packs securely in place so you can move around.
- A discreet and comfortable article of clothing.
- Worn on its own or underneath clothing as a base layer.
- Easy to put on, even if you’re injured or have limited mobility.
- Made in the USA.
The Revive Tank is a full-zip therapy garment designed to reduce pain and inflammation in the low and mid back. Our patent-pending design incorporates dual therapy pockets, long-lasting reusable thermal packs, and an adjustable compression strap. Now YOU can get easy and safe therapy to relieve back inflammation and pain on-the-go.
The Revive Tank is very easy to use:
Fabrics, Gel Packs, and Sizing:
We’re making the Revive Tank right here in the USA. We’ve built partnerships to source the best technical fabrics including neoprene, spandex and breathable meshes to give you the most comfort, support and durability for your therapy sessions.
We've partnered with a leader in the thermal therapy space for our hot / cold packs. Their patented gel technology allows the pack to remain frozen for up to 3 hours in a single session, which is nearly twice as long as the typical icepack. The same therapy pack can also be placed in the microwave for heat therapy.
With this Kickstarter campaign we will produce the Revive Tanks in both Men’s and Women’s designs, sizes M - XXL, in black. The size charts are listed below with measurements in inches. Don't worry about giving us your size now, we'll get this when the campaign closes.
JUST ADDED: Size SMALL :)
Spand-Ice was founded in October 2012. Since that time, my team and I have taken our product from an idea to reality.
We worked closely with a product development team to ensure a versatile design that appeals to back pain sufferers everywhere.
"Spand-Ice has taken my pain level from a place of chronic pain where I had trouble doing simple hiking and walking to a place where I can run, hike and do other outdoor activities with minimal pain." - Patty Chabala
"I rarely iced because I never sit down. I think this product is great since I could keep going as I’m helping my back. It made me ice and it helped significantly." - Nancy Bianculli
"As a fitness professional, I found that this allows me a lot more freedom. Before I'd have to take an hour out of my day to ice. Now I'm icing while I'm working with my next client and it's fantastic. This product is for anybody, not just for people with chronic back pain." - Brendan Bagin
"I felt Spand-Ice it did a great job of alleviating my back pain. I also found it to be a very practical way to ice after activity." Carol Martin
"There almost seems to be a lift of depression because I'm able to do things that I once wasn’t able to do. For me, being able to put on the Revive Tank and go is a major relief. I don't feel like I'm missing out on things."- Leah Cwynar
"Compliance is always a challenge in patients and fitting into their daily activities. Ice or heat take time to apply…I see the Revive Tank used in any active person because you always have bumps and bruises and sore spots. I also see it used routinely for individuals with chronic conditions. Those that have had surgery, those that are trying to avoid surgery, it’s a great way of managing your pain without being incapacitated by your pain." - James L. Cosgrove, M.D.
"Previously, my patients would have a hard time securing a hot or cold pack to their low back for pain relief. They would either sit in a chair and lean into the pack, or lie on top of it, which is not safe for the skin, as you risk a burn or frostbite. The Revive Tank solves this problem by providing a neat little pocket with compression at the same time. Plus, it’s comfortable and looks and feels like high-end athletic wear." - Jamie Glick MS, PT
The Spand-Ice Team:
I couldn’t have developed the Revive Tank alone and am incredibly proud of the local team of experts who assisted me in bringing the Revive Tank to market:
- A 4th generation seamstress who constructed all early prototypes and was instrumental in the development of the final design.
- A softgoods design consultancy that led design and advised on commercialization, sourcing and manufacturing.
- A technical design consultant who helped fine tune material selections, detailing and fit.
- An expert patent attorney who helped file our patent.
- A marketing research expert who helped analyze market data and customer base.
- A US-based manufacturer that helped to refine our garment for mass production.
- A network of media consultants who helped with social media, PR, video, and photography.
- A collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh’s Panther Lab Works, the Small Business Development Center, and local Pittsburgh incubator Thrill Mill.
- Alpha testers who dedicated their time and provided candid feedback to help us create the best possible product.
- An Advisory Board consisting of a Board-certified physician, a seasoned retail executive and operations executive. They have been integral in guiding business, product, and market decisions, from the very beginning.
Where we are now:
After 2 years, we have honed our design into the perfect blend of high quality materials to make our Revive Tank a reality. We’ve lined up all of the materials for production, set up the entire manufacturing process and are ready to share the Revive Tank with the world.
Why we need your support:
Until now, Spand-Ice has been self-funded with assistance from family members who believe in my vision. We're able to partially support the costs for our first manufacturing run, so at this point we need your help to get us all the way there! In order to manufacture our Revive Tanks right here in the USA, we need to meet the factory minimums. This is where you come in! By supporting us and buying a Revive Tank, you are letting us help you and others achieve a better quality of life.
We know that we can make a difference in the daily lives of back pain sufferers everywhere. This campaign will kickstart that success, and help not only to build a great back pain product, but also to launch a brand dedicated to helping people who suffer from other muscle pains. Low back is just the beginning.
