A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype.  PROOF OF CONCEPT -  Description  

This project relates  to a new mental fitness device in the shape  of a fitness hand weight, providing a general  brain fitness training method.

   For operation, the mental fitness device requires a connection over Bluetooth radio with with an external brainwave monitoring headset  that has  two sensors, attached to the user's head;  the MindWaveMobile™ brain activity monitoring headset of NeuroSky, Inc. of San Jose, Calif. 

 PROOF OF CONCEPT -  Use Cases

With the rise in the number of people affected by mental illnesses due to natural-born diseases or daily stress, the proposed novel fitness tool gives a low-cost electronic device alternative to a general user—regardless of their age, genre, or education level—to stay mentally fit and improve the mental focus and relaxation capability.

In general, there are few low cost mechanical toy alternatives like the "fidget spinner"  —considered to be helpful by some users to alleviate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety, absent-minded symptoms, meditation, boredom, and has the function of sedation. None of the mechanical options currently available, gives a user the possibility to monitor their progress, work with a group, review later, and share their training results for future analysis.This limitation is being addressed  by the functionality available in the proposed electronic device.

 PROOF OF CONCEPT -  Technical details 

 The preferred embodiment of the mental fitness device in a hand weight form, plus the lighting color scheme and sound vibration effects makes this mental fitness solution easy to use and appealing for any type of user. The tool encourages continuing exercise daily. In addition, if this project is successful, there will be  other type of embodiment that may be used with the present device, e.g wristbands smart watches or cylindrical form similar with the electrical tooth brushes.

  One aspect is to use the present device, along with a wireless link(20) to a computer (21), at run time or off-line, to improve the user's physiological state or physiological self-regulation according to predefined training levels (e.g., increase or maintain the maximum meditation or attention level during a time frame). The user may do so to perform better at general-cognitive activities e.g. encouraging the user's attention/focus. This is implemented by correlating the exercise's difficulty level with the user's attention and meditation level; the device has 6 levels/ranges of target meditation/attention color coded in multiple of 16 - represented by the number of RGB LEDs in the wheel (14) available on the top of the housing.

The connectivity of the device to the internal WiFi for data logging and analysis is completed using a configuration SW application  available for Windows and Android possibly. The level of training difficulty can be adjusted using the RampUp/Ramp down coefficients in the  PC SW configuration tool.

The device is intended to provide a training method including multiple levels of difficulty, beginner to advanced; and monitoring the levels of attention and/or meditation of one or possible more team member trainees, and recording the levels for analysis after. The basic web interface for the initial prof of concept is designed to display the meditation level after exercise, that was monitored and recorded over a period of time.

  If we 'll achieve our funding goal, I 'll start an aggressive  HW& SW validation activity with a team of 3 engineers, following an Agile type strategy for one month; the final release and the batch of devices ordered via pledges will be shipped during March 2020.

  In addition, a similar design(with more features) using different electronic components and appearance (clock shape) can be delivered as a DIY type project; I've included a project book  as part of the rewards section; the source code will be made available for download and the module, wiring harness and  housing  can be purchased separately, if requested from the support site.

 PROOF OF CONCEPT -  Final comments

I'm an expert in advanced speech applications,  with an extensive professional background in electrical engineering. The idea to design such a device, came after dealing with autism in my family, and realizing that there is no practical approach and method at a personal level to help kids with mental disorders and people stressed by the daily activities in general. The therapy for people with attention and mental focus disorders is expensive, and in most of the cases the outcome is minimal without a clear possibility to measure it over time.   In general, the health of human brain is key for a healthy and long life, and we keep abusing it by work related stress  and casual life situations.  For example, we've been educated since childhood to brush our teeth, for a healthy digestion when eating, better oral hygiene and a good smile to improve our presence; why  not adding to our daily routine this brain training device, and we meditate 30 min every day, early morning or late evening. This activity will help the brain and will be added to the brain recovery/ relaxation provided in general every night, during the sleep time.

Risks and challenges

I've built the housing for the initial prototypes using a 3D printer; the harness and additional electronic circuitry are made in my personal workshop. Moving forward, the success of the project is depending on tuning of the mechanical housing's design, and the proper selection of a cost efficient Contract Manufacturer. I'm planning to contact, and get quotes from various sources if/after the funding is made available.

The most relevant electronic components, included in the device's circuitry, are provided by 3rd parties with robust modular electronic solutions e.g. dc-dc converter, circuitry to control LED wheel and the other outputs; a complete validation of the software components, internal services and web interface, will be required.

The initial concept of the brain training device depends on the availability of the MindWave Mobile headset; to eliminate the dependency, additional software Bluetooth input drivers will be developed for other brands of brainwave monitoring headsets available on the market, e.g. Emotiv/Epoc, ..

    This project book will help the reader to build a device to monitor the brain’s activity using a Mindwave Bluetooth enabled headset – 2 parameters, Focus and Meditation – and FreeRTOS with Arduino on a ESP32 device, for a complete clock/weather monitoring application, that has audio announcement capabilities using an interface with a WTV020-SD module.

    I assume the reader of this book has a basic knowledge of the main SW components and various interfaces e.g. I2C, SPI, Serial, .. used in the final code. The main scope of the information included in the book is to provide an overall general introduction initially, and references after; for a more in-depth reading of the main SW components used in the source code e.g. FreeRTOS and Arduino.

    To make this book interesting and useful for the reader, I’ve compressed the technical details related with the HW components to a minimum, required to understand the overall functionality and details of the integration/interface with ESP32 chip.
