Spacex, Exeter’s contemporary visual art organisation, is at an exciting point in its forty year history. After a period of temporary closure in response to funding reductions, the organisation has changed the way it works. In place of being a gallery with a rolling programme of exhibitions Spacex now produces projects in collaboration with a wide range of partners.

Enabling the artistic process remains at the core of what Spacex does. We are passionate about giving artists the opportunity to pursue new directions and take risks, and offering this new residency programme is one way in which we will continue to do this.

The success of our Kickstarter campaign will cover the cost of two artists residencies and a series of associated events and learning projects in 2015–2016. The residencies will enable artists to develop their practice in a supportive and critically engaged environment and the associated programme will create opportunities for the public to engage with the artists’ work.

WHAT WILL MY MONEY FUND?

Residency 1: for an artist with a socially engaged practice

The residency will provide the opportunity to live and work in Exeter for a period of 6 weeks and will offer professional development for an artist interested in working collaboratively with students and locally based artists, exploring this context for research, dialogue and production.

The artist will benefit from:

  • Professional development support from Spacex staff in working with formal education contexts
  • Collaborating with a range of education professionals, students and artists from across the city
  • Use of the Spacex building as a studio space and opportunity to exhibit or present an event in the space

A programme of accessible events is planned to run alongside the residency, which will allow a wide audience to engage with the artist's work.

Residency 2: for an international artist

This residency is for an international artist to focus on the development of their practice, offering the opportunity to live and work in Exeter for a period of 6 weeks. The residency will allow the artist to conduct research and develop work in response to their new environment, benefiting from the support of Spacex staff and the resources available.

This residency will offer several opportunities for the artist including:

  • Professional development support from Spacex staff
  • Partnerships with additional cultural organisations in Exeter
  • Use of the Spacex building as a studio space and opportunity to exhibit or present an event in the space

Supporting partners, including the University of Exeter, Exeter College and Exeter Phoenix are committed to working with Spacex to ensure the smooth delivery of these residencies.

WHAT WE WILL DO IF WE EXCEED OUR TARGET

Spacex is committed to working with artists at all stages of their career. An extra £5,000 would support the development of our residency programme. Working with higher education partners across the country we would research and pilot a graduate residency project that supports emerging talent.

Risks and challenges

We are confident that this Kickstarter will provide two amazing residency opportunities for artists and a series of associated events that will fuel the appetite for access to contemporary art practice across the southwest.

We have experience of hosting residencies and using the Spacex building as a flexible workspace. Supporting partners (including the University of Exeter, Exeter College and Exeter Phoenix) are committed to working with us to secure the smooth delivery of these residencies. Plans and timelines are now in place.
