Come explore a magic murder mystery a la Sherlock Holmes, and a Jules Verne-esque mid-grade adventure. Here are two more stories of the Dissolutionverse, and you have the chance to read them first!
If you like variety, you can back both books. But maybe you just like mystery with secret societies. Maybe you and your child want to explore a new adventure book. You can do either with this campaign. The Dissolutionverse continues to branch into different genres and lengths of story, because it's that big of a universe!
The Society of Two Houses (MYSTERY/SUSPENSE)
Set fifty cycles before the events of The Seeds of Dissolution, Mandamon Feldo is scheduled to meet with a high-profile diplomat to present his newest invention, but he finds the diplomat dead in a pool of blood on the floor of his office. Even worse, the diplomat, until recently, was holding a list of all the members of The Society of Two Houses—a secret organization existing inside the maji, and one to which Mandamon belongs.
If the list gets out, the Society—which brings innovation and new technology to the Nether—may crumble under the weight of the secrets it holds. Often, the ends are seen to justify the means when developing new ideas, and the Society has done its share of cleaning up ‘accidents.’ Before the murderer can release the information, Mandamon must figure out who would kill the diplomat and betray The Society of Two Houses.
Journey to the top of the Nether (MID-GRADE ADVENTURE)
Natina grew up studying the artifacts found by her mother, the famous explorer Morvu Francita Januti. Now, her mother has discovered an ancient machine able to drill into the impenetrable mineral of the Nether, and is leading an expedition to climb its incredibly high walls for the very first time. She wants Natina to be part of the expedition, but Natina is more comfortable helping her parents research at home—if only her mother were home more often.
The Nether's walls are smooth like crystal, any fall will mean certain death, and no one knows what, or who, may lurk above the clouds. There are even rumors of another team of explorers following them, trying to steal their glory. It could be the chance of a lifetime for Natina, and a good way to learn how her mother became the most famous explorer of the ten species—if they survive.
(Note: Journey to the Top of the Nether may ship at a later date than The Society of Two Houses)
Imagine: a set of ten planets, separated by galaxies, yet within easy travel distance of each other. Portals created by maji link these ten homeworlds, not by space flight, but by music-based magic. Merchants step from one planet to another to sell their goods. Alien cultures and languages spill from one world to another. Members of all ten species gather inside the crystal walls of Nether, the center of the web of planets, to debate on trade, laws, and the economy of the Great Assembly.
Those belonging to the six houses of the maji use notes from the song of their experience to change the Grand Symphony underlying the universe. Each house taps into a different facet of reality, crafting modifications from music only its members can hear. Only maji can open the portals vital to the economy, leading some to think they hold too much power...
Here are not one, but two new novellas in my Dissolutionverse series:
The first is a mystery set fifty cycles before the events of The Seeds of Dissolution, and thirty before Tuning the Symphony. You don't have to have read any of the other stories, but there may be a few clues you pick up if you have!
As for the second novella, I sell books at cons, and I have a lot of younger children (with or without their parents) come up to my table and ask if my books are right for them. While I don't put a lot of cursing or graphic content in my books, sometimes the subject matter isn't that interesting to kids. This will be my first story geared toward younger readers, evoking the adventure and wonder of Jules Verne novels. And yes, adults can enjoy it too!
As always, I strive to have beautiful artwork in my stories, to help you imagine some of the fantastic people and places. I love to have interior illustrations in my books, but I also like to pay the amazing artists that draw them for me, and that's where you all come in. This kickstarter is largely to fund the cover and interior artwork in the novellas. This time, I have three different artists giving life to my stories:
Luisa J. Preißler is providing the excellent cover art for my mystery novella. You can see it on the cover image and at the top of this page. Luisa does work for games and books, and uses dramatic lighting and colors to make her illustrations pop--perfect for a Dissolutionverse cover!
Justin Donaldson creates really cool fantasy landscapes, and I thought his style would fit perfectly with the sense of adventure in my mid-grade book. As an added bonus, when we hit some stretch goals, he'll draw illustrations for each section of the novella to bring more characters and events to life!
Micah Epstein has graciously agreed to provide interior illustrations for The Society of Two Houses, based on how many stretch goals we hit! Micah has worked for Tor.com, illustrating several of their original fiction pieces. Take a look at some of his amazing work in his portfolio and on Tumblr. You can see some of his previous illustrations for The Seeds of Dissolution below.
Speaking of goals...
The base campaign will fund the cover and associated costs for The Society of Two Houses, and each stretch goal will unlock a new piece of art, starting with funding the cover for the second novella, and then moving on to interior illustrations. How many can we unlock?
How can you get these incredible rewards? Well...
Even throwing in just a dollar will help, and will get you some new desktop wallpaper and your name in the book!
You can get the novellas in electronic format, and more just a few dollars more, get either version signed and shipped to your door!
But why buy one when you can get two for twice the price? (How many get that reference?) Read an exciting adventure, then settle down with a mystery!
If you haven't read any of the Dissolution books, then, why not get them all? Discover the Dissolutionverse, a mid-tier backer level, includes all five books: Tuning the Symphony, Merchants and Maji, The Seeds of Dissolution, The Society of Two Houses, and Journey to the Top of the Nether!
Finally come some really cool rewards, but they are limited! There are two spaces for you, dear reader, to become a character in The Society of Two Houses, and another two spots for Journey to the Top of the Nether! It makes a very inventive birthday gift to give someone a second life in a book! I promise I won't kill off all of them...
If that doesn't strike your fancy, how about a piece of original art? Justin Donaldson is making his original sketch for the cover art for Journey to the Top of the Nether available for purchase. You can own this drawing by backing the Art of the Dissolutionverse level.
International Shipping: Yep. It's expensive. The cost included is the cheapest I've been able to find it for. However, I've included electronic options for all the physical books, if you don't want to deal with shipping.
If you want to sign up for my mailing list, you can do so here, and get the free short story from the previous Kickstarter campaign!

Risks and challenges
These projects will be self published, at a base level, even if the Kickstarter is not funded. This campaign is to help realize the full potential of these two novellas, supplying incredible artwork for the cover and interior.
There are always risks and challenges with determining a budget for a campaign such as this, but I am a Professional Engineer by training, and have spent the last 12 years in cost and benefit analysis. I have accurately assessed costs for large projects in my work environment so I have a good understanding of how and where money is spent, and I have applied that knowledge to this Kickstarter. In addition, I successfully ran a similar Kickstarter for my first book in August/September 2017Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
