Update #81

October 1st Update

Since the release of the alpha demo back in July, we have learned a lot. We've listened to your feedback and have done a lot more play testing. We've talked about removing things that didn't feel intuitive and adding things that did. Obviously in order to do that, a good amount of code has had to be rewritten, but in saying that, the code that has been rewritten has all been for the greater good of the full game, not just stability for the demo portion of the game.

Since the demos release we now have a system in place that manages our narrative and allows for easier narrative updating for the writing of the game. We also just recently got a good system in place that allows for simpler cut scene management and implements narrative and VO to be managed by the game engine without having to do a lot of rigging.

More artwork and animations have been completed by Mark and his team. Ken Allen has also been pumping out more needed SFX and music for the game as well. In saying all of that we did lose one of our Unity programmers due to him having another contract he had to take on. That leaves us with an opening for a unity game developer.

We'd love to give someone a shot at this position if they are qualified and a fan of what we are trying to accomplish :)

Requirements:

  • Experience developing with Unity 3D (2 or more years)
  • Must know C# 3 or more years
  • Shipped Titles
  • A passion for adventure games
  • Able to work with a small team in a virtual office
  • Must be able to work a minimum of 20 hours a week

If you are interested or know someone who may meet our requirements, please contact me directly. Email: chris@guysfromandromeda.com

Chris Pope a.k.a your humble local intergalactic SpacePope

PS- I will be at the Geek Media Expo in Nashville TN from Nov 1st - 3rd and would love to meet some of you. Drop by and say hi if you can! :)

@ TwoGuys+Spacepope: it's all fine... and we do care about the project... since SQ is the project i've spent the most money in my backer-career, i want to let you guys know that not even rumors of the project failing get me upset. if its delayed i have absolutely no problem. and you still got 100% support from your fans. i think the majority of us has seen more or less all of their backed kickstarter-projects delayed for a long time. The hell.... i only got 2 games so far, but they have been worth the wait and as long as you can work on a new game, i'm happy with it. If you run out of funds, we just have to talk about it, live trough the sudden duststorm that will come up and then find new ways to keep this project alive.
Its not a coincidence we have fu**ing 31k+ comments on this campaign :D

A handful of the Two Guys' slightly more persistent fans (the "street team" affectionately dubbed the Keronian Underground) had the opportunity to chat with Chris Pope yesterday, so I have this on very good authority: The Two Guys are very flattered and grateful for the support we've been showing. They were actually really nervous about how the community would take the project's delay, and still are. But people have been overwhelmingly supportive rather than disappointed, and they wanted us to relay their gratefulness to everybody.

Which, really, I think they're going to be doing for the update on the 16th, anyway, so really I'm just stealing their thunder at this point. ;)

I just want to leave a message of support to all who are working on SpaceVenture! I'm sure all who are waiting for the game have a backlog of games to finish already (I know I do) and will appreciate a better game that's taken time rather than a bad game that's been rushed! Good luck to all. :)

Seeing folks respond to the recent unpleasantness with such maturity and positivity is a testament to the kind of community we've built together through the years. Kudos to everyone out there for rising above the bitterness and cynicism!

Going back to my earlier statement, I would just like to clarify that my problem with Paul Trowe has nothing to do with money. That was never mentioned until be decided to bring it up in his last response, so he apparently doesn't get it. I despise Paul for the way he treats people. As his actions towards Serena demonstrate, he's abusive toward anyone he works with, including his most loyal fanbase. Her story is, unfortunately, only one of many. Paul can thank himself for making that one public.

Despite all of his antics, I would also like to say that I'm proud the work I did on this game and cherish the friendships made along the way. It was an absolutely pleasure working with the talents of Al Lowe, Josh Mandel, other Replay employees, the guys and gals at N-Fusion, and my fellow volunteers. However, considering the circumstances, I will never support another Leisure Suit Larry project as long as Paul Trowe is involved. If that means no Larry, so be it.

Creator Warbird Games on October 12, 2013

Hey, if Mark and Scott are gainfully employed putting their own brand of humor into a new adventure game, I think all our money is well spent. That's why I contributed, I think that's why many of you here contributed, mission accomplished.

As to when the game will be released, I'm really not even concerned about that in the least. I'm sure it will be ready when it's ready, and I'm sure it will be a blast to play.

However, in my mind, Kickstarter isn't about pre-purchasing a product, it's about making someone's dreams come true and supporting the arts. The rewards, to me, are just that: rewards for my willingness to support. I had more fun watching Dogonauts, the stop motion short I helped fund, than I have had watching anything in a long time. And that's because I helped make it happen. I helped the animators fulfill their dream, and the result was awesome. And that's a feeling of accomplishment and involvement that I'll just never be able to find in some DVD I pick up at Walmart.

I think it's important to remember what this is all about, even if there are those out there who seem to have never gotten it to begin with.

Kudos to the SpaceVenture team, you guys are doing great. We can all see that. Carry on!

Creator Usman on October 12, 2013

I think the only obvious reason for Paul to be so outspoken about this is he probably approached Mark & Scott to choose Replay as their publisher and they decided otherwise. As such, he has taken it upon himself to use some attempts to derail the project and hurt its prospect to be a success. I assume this is in the hope that Replay games will take over the project if it fails.

I think the person who needs to really think long and hard about this is Al Lowe. Al obviously wants to see Larry return and be a success but the biggest liability to that is Paul. If I was Al, and the sales figures for LSL:R look good, I would use some of Paul's tactics against himself and approach Codemasters about making a new game directly with them.

...really appreciated, and I have to say that you've earned my respect, in regards to your professionalism with regards to criticism. It makes me feel good to support this project, and the team you've assembled. Along those lines, we've not really done a GFA staff spotlight on any of the new people. I had the fortune of a long and interesting IRC chat with Michael way back during the campaign (along with more Scotch than I'd care to admit), and was impressed by his talents and personality. Of course, I also backed Ken on his music project, which I'm eagerly awaiting as well. And of course we all got to know PCJ (at least those backers weren't already his friends in the SQ community for many years). Troels is someone gets you to know him whether you like it or not, due to his gregarious personality ;-) However, there are others that we've never met. Maybe they'd like to do an interview? It's just an idea!

SpacePope, Guy Mark & Guy Scott: Your community is behind you, 100%! Of course we have concerns because we care so much (and some of us contributed a fair bucket o' buckazoids), and of course we'd love more transparency and non-spoiler goodies and earlier shipping, in the fantasy world of perfect software development. I'd like you to know that the increased frequency of updates (which we've noticed!) is really appreciated, and
Brandon: I wouldn't say it's exactly true that nobody else is unhappy with the status of the project. The earlier comments here reflect some (justified) frustration, disappointment, and annoyance. However, I agree with you that none of the grumpy people seem to be withdrawing support or casting aspersions on the team, least of all me (and I do admit my own share of grumpiness).

Paul is right; making games is difficult. Like he said, even a high-profile title like Leisure Suit Larry struggled to get out, despite galloping past its expected funding by over $100,000. SpaceVenture barely made it to funding by the skin of its teeth. I know for a fact that The Two Guys haven't just been sitting on their butts, huffing space ecstacy and scarving pizza slices off three-breasted lovebots, all this time.

With the hitches in the road which you are aware of, and which will be elucidated come next update, things aren't progressing as fast as The Two Guys want, and they're not blind to how fans may be disappointed in that. It's very gratifying to see that the spirit of support and trust is still out there.

I suppose we owe Paul a debt of thanks for showing us how not to do things.

Incidentally, I'm proud to be supporting a project whose management doesn't do things the way you do them at Replay. Your behaviour here is going to have repercussions. Serena and Tom won't be the only fans and volunteers lost. If you're too delusional to see that, I feel sorry for you.

I was never offered any money by anyone at Replay. I never pushed that because I was completely fine with being a volunteer, as evident by my continuation with the project for the five months I was on board until the project ended. So you would be correct in saying that I never got paid, but I was never offered to be paid, so please stop perpetuating that lie just like you tried to get me to lie about my alleged payment for Replay to UIEG (see screenshots below).

More to the point, even if you had offered to pay me, even if Two Guys are having financial troubles like you say--something that you have not backed up with any plausible data--and even if they are behind, why are you insulting and slandering a fellow developer? They've done nothing to hurt you, and if they have, you're not saying anything about it. Chris and the Two Guys have been nothing but awesome to the community, and it's clear they're busting their asses to get this game done (which as you know is no easy task). Your problem, Paul, is that you consider yourself one of us and you're just not. And that's not even an insult. You're the head of a company. You're allowed to do whatever you want, yes, but should you? One would think being in that position (especially one that works in the same playing field as all these other Kickstarter project creators) would bring with it a certain level of professionalism. It doesn't matter if you're a consumer in this case, it reflects badly on you and your entire company that you're reacting like this. You're not even treating it like professional competition. You're not only not supporting them, you're going out of your way to deface and humiliate them (poorly, I might add). It doesn't matter that you're doing this on your own, everybody just sees the company (as much as I'm sure the victims see an old colleague and friend slapping them down). All the other adventure revival Kickstarter project creators have been very professional and have helped everybody else out in every way they can. Did they air their dirty laundry? No. It's not only unprofessional but despicable for someone in your position. They could have all been as critical as you are and would be just as entitled to (you know, free country and all that), but they didn't. You're just coming off as a bully. And that's not a label you want or need. Like it or not you're a public figure and you need to watch what you say. And besides your position, it speaks a lot of your basic human character to badmouth everything to the extent that you have...AFTER apologizing for the same behaviour a year ago. Not that I care, go ahead and keep it up. It'll only ruin your reputation even further. Personally, I think it's already been irrevocably tarnished.

And for the record, many of us do know what it takes to make a game, seeing as many of us have been (and still are) involved in several game projects.

It's kind of funny, actually. You actually are going against Kickstarter policy because directly next to the Post Comment button is a line of text that reads "Be respectful and considerate" which also acts as a link to Kickstarter's Community Guidelines.

Wow, talk about a bunch of trolls!!! I backed this project myself and came to check on it ONCE since February since things finally started slowing down. My company didn't back this project I DID, and I'm entitled to say whatever I want to say about it. If it's out of line or violates Kickstarter's Terms & Conditions, then it'll be removed. I do apologize for causing so much drama, but I don't apologize for what I said. I don't have faith in this project anymore and I think the demo was flat out awful. If any of you made any games I would have heard of (and can verify in the credits), then you are entitled to say something to rebut my argument. But the fact is, you haven't the slightest clue what it takes to make a real game and all you can do is bad mouth me because I expressed my own opinion and it's not like yours. Well guess what, it's a free world and I can say what I want about a project I backed, end of story.

And as for you Tom King, I have plenty of stories about you too and why Al won't answer your emails anymore or listen to "your side" of any story. Grow up, Tom. You call me unprofessional? That's a joke.

If I were venting my opinion as the CEO of Replay then that's one thing, but here I'm a consumer of a project I backed and have no faith in. So go troll on spacequest.net and gossip about me because honestly, I won't lose sleep over anything you guys have to say about me.

Paul Trowe's goal, for a while now, has appeared to be to bring harm to the SpaceVenture project. What are his motivations? Is he just a concerned fan, or is there more to it? The sad part is that Trowe is pulling the LSL:R team and N-Fusion into all this. To be honest, I wish Paul Trowe never had to get involved in any of these Sierra remakes. He has behaved immaturely, unprofessionally, brings negative attention to his games, hurting his hard-working employees, and has apparently been wanting to de-emphasize sex in LSL, to many fans' dismay. I wish someone like that professional, reliable Australian guy from Himalaya Studios instead had gotten the Larry license. At least then there would have been less unnecessary drama and more focus on the actual games. One way or another, SpaceVenture will be completed, and I'm confident it will be great.
