The VO of SpaceVenture - Part 1

Posted by Two Guys From Andromeda (Creator)

Hey everyone! As promised, we wanted to give you a more detailed look at all the voice over that has gone into SpaceVenture. In the last update, we had not yet flown to California to record the VO.

Back in the middle of August, Mark Crowe, Ken Allen, and myself(Chris Pope) flew to Los Angeles for five full days of voice over with some extremely talented people!

We have been pushing hard to get the VO working in the game and have made some headway but still have a long way to go. In this update, I am gonna feature a few of the actors in the game along with their VO. This will be "Part 1", but I will post another update involving all this once we've got more of the VO in the game to demo for you all!

I'm also excited to announce two of the biggest roles in the game, right now!

In the last update, we gave you a little of Maurice's background, so I won't do that now, but if you didn't know, Maurice is one of the top voice actors in animation. If you're not familiar with the characters he has voiced, please check out his mile long IMDB page. We were absolutely blown away by Maurice's audition for Ace, and(once in the booth) how quickly he took direction to make Ace Hardway come to life. I won't lie, after working on this game for six years, I got a little teary eyed standing there in the studio and getting to finally hear the voice of Ace Hardway speak dialog for the first time!

Here is a sit down I did with Maurice to talk a little about his history as an actor:

You are all probably chomping at the bit to get a chance to hear what Ace Hardway sounds like, so without further ado, here is a video featuring a cutscene with Ace Hardway(Maurice LaMarche) and Mervin Spleen(Rob Paulsen).

Rob Paulsen is another amazing voice actor with mile long credits just like Maurice. Rob did numerous characters for us in SpaceVenture that we will reveal as time goes on, but the one you saw in the above video is a character named Mervin Spleen. Here is behind the scenes sit down I did with Rob Paulsen.

The voice of the narrator is something we did not announce in the last update because we were still confirming things. Well we are happy to announce, we did finally settle on the narrator for the game and we have officially recorded the narrator VO as well. As you all know, we originally had the late Gary Owens on board to be the narrator for the game just like he narrated the later Space Quest games in the past.

For a couple of years now, we have gone back and forth on whether to find someone who could sound like Gary, or go a completely different direction. Within the last few months, we finally decided that we wanted to go with a happy medium and find someone that could parody Gary's awesome sarcastic tone. We also thought it would be neat to honor Gary in a some ways. SpaceVenture will have some dedications to Gary and will include a scene that you, the player, will be a part of that pays tribute to Gary. Not gonna spoil that here though. You'll find out when you play the game.

I have a lot more to show you all coming up in the next update, but here are some teaser small clips we posted on Facebook that will hopefully tide you over.

For awhile now, Scott has wanted to keep things private about what has been going on with him, and we have honored that. With his permission, we are gonna give you all a little info of what has been happening in his life.

Not too far after finishing the game design planning with Mark on SpaceVenture, Scott began having severe medical problems which has now escalated to an aggressive form of prostate cancer.

The good news: Scott was able to get surgery and currently it seems that the surgery was a success.

The bad news: With all that has happened, Scott ran up well over $30,000 in medical bills in doing so, and still has more procedures he needs to have done to make sure his health is in order.

On top of his current -- as well as future -- medical bills, Scott is also trying to pay the normal bills we all deal with. A place to live, utility bills, food, etc. With reluctance, Scott has given us permission to do a GoFundMe campaign to ease the financial stress that's accumulated on top of the ordeal of recovering from prostate cancer. He is very appreciative of any help any of you can give his way.

Please keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages as we are gonna do some promotions to help raise money for Scott through the GoFundMe page. Troels, aka the Space Quest Historian will be doing some live streaming to help get the word out as well!

We know you would probably like more information. We will give more information as Scott allows.

If you've been living under an asteroid and haven't heard, Lori and Corey Cole(makers of the Quest for Glory series) have released their new game, "Hero U". If you haven't already checked it out, you should! It's getting great reviews!

If you go by the day the kickstarter closed, this has been in development for 2,417 days.

The total time between the release of SQ1 and SQ5 was 2,290 days. In another year we will be incredibly close to the time between SQ1 and SQ6.

Where is Ken Williams and his whip when you need him?

Yeah, just noticed that donation from Ken Williams - great to see.

All these Sierra people, kind of feel like family to me, despite me never having met them in person. A good chunk of my childhood was spent either playing their games or rummaging around libraries and magazine stores looking for interviews and reviews of their games. My career as a software developer is completely because of the early AGI games (Space Quest, Black Cauldron, Police Quest, KQ3), and me wanting to learn how to make those games, so I am truly indebted to these guys and the gifts they've given us over the years.

      awesome update!

Did anyone notice this very generous donation by none other than his former employee, Ken Williams?

Almost there guys! But please don't stop then, as the bills were 3 times the amount we're about to raise for Scott. After all he's the guy (well, one of the two) who brought us so much fun in our lives, shouldn't ruin his live! Think of it as a overdue payment for that illegal copy of Space Quest back in the day ;)

I think the lip syncing is weird, but I'm liking the voice acting and writing. I am glad it will finally be done soon.

So sorry to hear about all of Scott's trouble. When I have some extra dough I'll try to throw some his way. I hate the healthcare system in the United States and it's so unfair for him to have to deal with all of those bills to just have a life.

Finally some news on Scott! Poor guy. Better go help!

    10. Decaffeinated Jedi on

I posted a version of this on Twitter earlier, but I thought I'd share it here too (especially in light of the insensitivity of certain backers ).

Some folks around here probably know that I got my start online running a Space Quest fan site back in the mid-1990s. When Scott found out about my site, he reached out with kind words and encouragement. He shared stories about Space Quest's development. He let me pester him with interviews. He even leaked behind-the-scenes information about the 1999 shutdown of Sierra's Oakhurst studio before the games media caught wind of it.

I think I can speak for Scott when I say that he has always deeply appreciated Space Quest and adventure game fans. Prior to falling ill, he would go out of his way to interact with them online -- even at a time before social media made it easy for creators and fans to connect. Scott has inspired me as a writer, as an amateur game designer, and as a person. If you can help him out, whether it's with a donation or simply spreading the word, I'm sure it would mean a lot.

    11. Marc M. Kloosterman on

I said '3 days'. That's how long this page is up. But the donations are no more than half a day old. Incredible!

    12. Marc M. Kloosterman on

Great update - I'm a fan of Rob and Maurice for many years (P&tB, Futurama) and of course the inevitable happened: Rob had to sing Yakko's Song, again. :D

Also inevitable is that healthcare sucks in the USA, I made a modest donation because our healthcare will take care of huge bills. Every little gift helps: already 1/3rd of the funds have been raised after 3 days!

Johnny W below me mentioned John K.'s cartoon 'Cans without Labels'. Fortunately this turned out quite well for me, because of some nice perks. Unlike rival website Indiegogo, on which there was a project for a handheld console. More than half a million British Pounds were 'lost'. The website promised to start an investigation, but we're still waiting.

      Been there, done that.

I still believe in this project though.

Is there a way I can opt completely out of this? I no longer want any of my physical copy stuff, nor the game itself. Thanks!

Great update! Ed Kelly sounds like he'll be a great narrator. I am a bit mad at Rob Paulsen though. Now I'll have that song stuck in my head all day.

Really sorry to hear about Scott. That's hard to go through.

    15. Johnny W on

      Great update, thanks CP.

Also: Did someone just question if they were LYING about cancer? Christ, what is wrong with some people? Go away and think about what you're saying. And remember: This is just a videogame. I know this Kickstarter hasn't gone as smoothly as we hoped, but it's gone a lot better than several of the other Kickstarters I've helped crowdfund.

There was a documentary on David Lynch that the creators just absolutely completely screwed us backers on -- even though they made the documentary and it got a worldwide cinema release and everything. Never got our promised rewards.

And I'm still waiting for a cartoon by Ren & Stimpy creator, John K, that I backed around the same time as these guys.

Kickstarter is a GAMBLE, not a guarantee. Sorry if you didn't read the small print. Chris Pope and company are at least making progress, albeit slowly, which is something to be THANKFUL for.

In case you didn't realise: They don't HAVE to release these status updates, you know. They could just disappear like the David Lynch documentarians did on us backers. There's no recourse at all when this happens, because sometimes projects fail.

The fact that they put all of this together shows a tremendous amount of good faith, which is something to be rewarded with a little human decency. Not insulting them by questioning if someone really has cancer or not. It's a videogame! Jesus.

@DZ to clarify, I’m sorry you’re not happy with the graphics/animation. As for the audio, it has not gone through the final mix. It’s still a work in progress

      DZ on

I saw the interview videos and was really impressed with the talent. Then I saw the Ace Hardway video with the voice-overs and was severely disappointed. The voice acting is great (of course), but the animation is clunky, the ambient sound noise, and all the voices sound precisely like they were recorded in a sound-proof studio and mixed by amateurs.
The character of Marvin Spleen, although voiced to perfection by Mr. Paulsen, looked like a weird caricature of Dr. Smith (which I'm sure was meant), but the "realistic" facial impression does not really fit the rest of the cartoony style. Then there are his eyes, which seem to point randomly around.
Is this is how the final game will look like, then we're in for a big disappointment. Six years. Man, if at least they were put into a coherent vision...

    18. Tomimt on

All I'm going to say is, that I really like the quality of the voice acting. Lamarche made me crack up with the Ace lines. And Kelly sounds like a very good replacement for Owens.

I'm glad to see (and hear) how you are still making progress on the game, the voice work sounds really good, and I have faith this will be a very enjoyable game when it is finally done.

I am sorry to hear about Scott's health problems, I hope he recovers well and stays healthy in the future. It's awful that he now has to deal with financial troubles as an aftermath. This system really needs to change.

    22. Justin on

I see no problem with anyone "questioning" the validity of the information given especially when they are asking for money and especially given their track record. I've seen people sink much lower then that. So...if fake then the only "dick move" is on their part. If true then, well, that sucks. Big time. I'm currently watching someone die from stage 4 cancer. I don't see a single person questioning whether or not cancer sucks.

So enough with the knee jerk commentary and actually listen (read?) to what people are saying (typing?). Seriously.

    23. Troels Pleimert - Space Quest Historian on

@Ksimms: I hope in time you will realize how obscenely hurtful and insensitive those comments are.

    24. Ohverture on

@KSimms - you must have missed the whole "Be respectful and considerate" bit - be upset about the state of the game if you want, but don't question someone's health problems, especially cancer. I've had it, it sucks, it's difficult to admit, and the medical system in the USA sucks - I live in Australia, so I had no bills, and I can't imagine having to deal with that shit on top of having the disease. Dick move, seriously.

    25. Ohverture on

Awesome update, thank you guys. Having given my right nut to be free of cancer, I wish Scott all the best with the recovery and fallout. I'm sorry your medical system sucks but I hope the GFM helps out a bit.

    26. KSimms ✵ ✵ on

I would like to believe that what we read in the updates about Scott Murphy getting and then being cured of cancer is true, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a speck of doubt, given the history of this Kickstarter.

    27. William Karnesky on

Just chiming in to say I' played Hero-U. If you liked Hero's Quest/Quest For Glory, then you should give it a shot.

    28. KSimms ✵ ✵ on

Hopefully Scott Murphy and others are telling the truth about him having had cancer. One could be forgiven for not immediately being 100% trusting, given the history of this project. Good luck to him with his new fundraiser to pay various bills. We didn't hear much of anything about him, or from him, for years, until he decided to have others ask for more money for him.

Hopefully the next update will tell us more about the status of beta testing and the latest estimated release date.
