Damned shame. He'll be sorely missed. :[
Yeah, I was really saddened by the news of Gary's passing. He was a singular talent.
On the upside, all the new bits of the game look AWESOME!
After hearing about Gary Owens death, I went and listened to some interviews with him. He really did seem like a friendly, warm person who was rightly proud of his large body of work and who loved what he did. He helped make many people happy through his work, and I am glad that he was able to be a part of the Space Quest series.
Okay, I am back to feeling positive about this project. The graphics and music are excellent. Damn it, I really want this game to kick some ass and be successful. I hope Mark's brother can help out again with filming a little launch video starring the Two Guy when it's getting close to release time. I believe a lot of people are going to be pleasantly surprised when they play this game. Although there is still much work to do, I say this team is going to get this baby done and done right.
It would have been so cool to have Gary narrate another Two Guys game. Sadly that just wasn't in the cards.
Very sad, real shame he hadn't already recorded all the lines, would have been a nice tribute.
While I am saddened by Gary's passing, I do have a suggestion for a possible replacement. Denny Delk, a voice actor for many Lucasarts adventure games, who has a wide range of talent. http://www.dennydelk.com He can sound a bit like Gary, and might be able to carry the same role.
Awesome! Can't wait, - this game is going to be worth every waiting hour! And the Cranepit looks great too! It reminds me of SQ3 inside the Junk Freighter! Brings back fond memories ! :)
Sad to hear about Gary. He will be missed, not just by Space Quest fans. May he rest in peace.
On a positive note, it is good to see some of the progress made. I'm not bothered at all that the project is taking longer than intended, as the upshot is that it seems like we'll be getting an awesome game!
I hope there will be some kind of mention, like "In memory of Gary Owens" or similar, in the end credits or in the intro.
I like the videos and the music you showed in the update, though :)
Little I could add about Gary Owens now except to say that this is such a bummer. Rest in peace, Mr. Owens.
You know, I'm not sure how others will react to the Cluck Yegger game, but I personally didn't get to play the app being lampooned here so I look forward to this. But I am curious what classic mode looks like since the video showed the enhanced mode.
The welder... do you control the welding or just where it welds?
In the cranepit - I hope look is a usable command. :)
The bonus scene's area looks beautiful once the colors come in.
The flavor of the galaxy is in place in those last images.
I look forward to the game coming out and wish you all success with it.
My condolences are on the table as well here. What a loss...
As far as this update goes I am BLOWN AWAY! The lighting on the crane scene is gorgeous Mark!!! Fantastic job on this game you guys and I can't wait to see the final product.
Also If I may throw my 2¢'s in on the narrator and perhaps this may be out of budget here but I think realistically William Shatner could really deliver a simular kind of magic that Gary would have.
Thanks for the Update again you Guys and keep up the great work!!!
But...would we... want... the narrator... to talk... like... this?
William Shatner speaking.....three words at....a time then.......pausing for dramatic.....effect. It might work. Certainly would add several hours to the game! Gary Owens was one of a kind. I'm old enough to remember him on Laugh-In. He will be missed.
William Shatner could be an amusing alternative, certainly.
but almost certainly too expensive, unless he is a secret Space Quest fan
I think an understated narrator actor might be worth considering. Someone with a knack for subtlety. Not everyone can pull off the big announcer voice personality like Gary Owens could. We don't want an annoying narrator irritating players. Sometimes less is more. Remember, there are going to be a lot of narrations, and what might what sound funny or fresh the first few times might be grating by the 1000th piece of dialogue.
Voiced narration is really tricky. I don't want to name any names, as it was another indie adventure, but it had a lot of narration. But at places it was pretty damned annoying when the sarcastic narrator kept repeating the same lines for the hundereth time when you looked at something with a generic line or did try to do something that gave same, generic answer to everything.
Though the quality of the actual writing is pretty important as well, it's not all about the deliery. It's 50/50.
What a shame. :(
I agree with Tomimt.
I say look for low male (female wouldn't work) voice. No nasally head voices, please. Someone expressive in a subtle way and *NOT* over-the-top. Go for someone who understands the nuance in the humor and who doesn't speak too slowly or too deliberatively.
Please don't direct the actor to overdo the "sarcastic narrator" shtick. Let any sarcasm be delivered in a more light-handed way. The "sarcastic narrator" character has become a cliche, and such narrators start feeling overbearing and tiresome after awhile.
Look for someone who sounds intelligent but who does NOT come off as an arrogant a-hole all the time. We should be entertained by the narrator, not think the guy is an overly obnoxious prick and despise him.
I have seen clever, funny adventure game writing ruined by narrator actors who overdid the "sarcastic personality" delivery. Sometimes restraint and subtlety works so much better.
Sad news, but thanks for the update
Another awesome, but depressing update... I vote for James Earl Jones or an impostor for narration... Maybe the Allstate guy... Sorry to non-US backers for the All-State reference... Maybe the mayhem guy?
With Gary gone, I nominate Bruce Campbell.
Bruce Campbell would be awesome! William Shatner for a space game would be pretty funny.
Has any one heard of Ted Williams?
Saw this video and thought I would share it. Thoughts as far as a possible Narrator for Space Venture?
One more Link with a few videos
Maybe a non-celebrity narrator would also be ok? Maybe working with less well-known people would be easier because there might be less ego on their part and you could tell them to read lines exactly how you want and not be feel afraid of offending them. There are so many incredible voice actors available who can literally do any kind of narrator personality or style that's asked of them. More important than *who* is chosen is *how* they're instructed or directed to deliver the lines.
