What happens if you could escape from life difficulties that you can do nothing about? What if you could paint all your troubles away or turn them into magical musical notes? “Lona: Realm of Colors” is an artistic adventure about a girl trying to deal with her difficulties by painting them. The more she paints the more her drawings transform real life troubles into abstract art forms and as she is more and more consumed by her paintings she loses touch with real world, and finally gets trapped in her art.
“Lona: Realm of Colors” is a point and click adventure in nature focusing on art and narration instead of fetch puzzles and dialogue. Each level is an abstraction of Lona’s story and it is up to you to bring peace and balance to her painting and find out what has happened to her.
Each level has two sides: a chaotic side represented by Ms. Schmidt the cat and a dark side represented by Mr. Ruppel the crow. You can switch between the two worlds at will and try to bring balance to these extreme interpretations of a single situation. You can use items from each world in the other one and everything you do might affect both worlds. There will be 15 unique scenes from Lona’s memory and paintings each having two sides.
Ms. Schmidt This cat represents the chaotic point of view of everything. She doesn’t take anything seriously and what Lona sees through Ms. Schmidt’s eyes is nothing but colorful surrealistic chaos. She is named after Otto Schmidt, our biggest source of inspiration in art style.
Mr. Ruppel The dark and extreme logical side of things is shown from the point of view of this crow named after the great Rohb Ruppel, our favorite art director of all times! When Lona sees the world from Mr. Ruppel’s perspective, her paintings become dark, cold and realistic.
Lona Our heroine is a very talented artist who is struggling to deal with her conflicting emotions by painting them. She sees everything from the extreme dark and chaotic point of view of her two companions and needs to find balance and inner peace in order to move on. Lona’s story is inspired by all the great emotional stories we heard from master Miyazaki, stories that made us more in touch with our emotions and that is what we plan to do with Lona.
“Lona: Realm of Colors” is an art game so our main focus is bringing a unique and exotic 2D art style to the game. There will be 15 levels or scenes in the game. Each scene has two “dark” and “chaotic” versions with different art styles and one “balanced” version.
The game-play is a classic point and click type but everything you do and each item in the scene is part of Lona’s story. Everything is there as a part of the game’s grand narration and it’s up to you to piece together everything and find out the real story.
No visual artistic experience is complete without music! The magic of music is what brings everything together and makes the experience even more memorable. Each level has its own atmospheric music so you will need to bring your good headphones to the game!
We are aiming for minimum input from the player since we want this game to be an experience of art and emotions not hand-eye coordination! The game-play uses typical point and click mechanics to interact with everything in the scenes but there will be no inventories and no in game HUD to ruin your immersion. We strongly aim for mobile and touch-screen devices in our stretch goals so minimal input is a requirement from start.
In each level you can shift the world from cold “dark” version to the colorful “chaotic” one at will and you can grab items from one world to another to make magic happen! Some items change the world drastically and some items are just required to trigger an event.
“Lona: Ream of Colors” is a work of pure love, our love for video games and animations. This is tribute to the people who have changed our lives and to the medium which we witnessed its birth and evolution.
Our vision for “Lona: Realm of Colors” was pretty much shaped by the magical world of Hayao Miyazaki. We enjoyed, learned and lived with the masterpieces of Miyazaki and our choices of Visual Development for Lona is our sincere tribute to the master. You might even find some cute references in the game!
The original music made for each level is at least half of the experience! Each one composed by our talented musician, and splitted into two versions for both universes! Needless to mention that the vocals are also done by Taraneh, the one and only artist of Lona’s adventure!
“Lona : Realm of Colors” is a work of heart, and we love to make this game to produce a “Video Game as an Art-form”. The story and characters are well written and we made sure that we provide them with the most beautiful and stylish visuals, as well as an album of original sound track for the whole experience. We are in love with interactive storytelling and that’s why Lona is a video game, and whether you are a gamer or an art-lover or both, we need your sincere support to create this piece of art and bring it to you, not for selling or getting rich, but only for the sake of making another beautiful video game that people will hopefully enjoy playing. More importantly, we want to build a community from the beginning and involve you with our Art/Design decisions through the whole journey, which is yet another reason for our crowdfunding approach.
Risks and challenges
Making video games is difficult and we acknowledge that. That is why we have chosen to make an adventure game that reduces so many technical challenges and makes room for our unique art style to shine.
We are a team of passionate video game lovers and have been working together for a long time. That is why we know each others’ skills and when creating a project like “Lona: Realm of Colors” we try to do what everyone is already good at. We focus on our skills in art, music and narration and a pleasant experience!
And of course we will involve you throughout the whole journey! We will give regular updates via our social media and ask for your opinion, in the end you all are the reason this game is being made.
