About

Hidden Heroes is a one-shot adventure for the fifth edition of the world’s greatest role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons.  The players take on the roles of small forest creatures as an unexpected incursion of predators into their home forest threatens their way of life. Through their own innate abilities and assistance from their fey friends, these small animals hope to save their friends, family, and home before it is too late.  Play as the smallest creatures in D&D as they fight a tiny, epic battle to save their home from the encroaching predators.

Designed to be played in a single session, it's a perfect RPG adventure when you need something quick-prep for a one-shot or you need an action-oriented addition to your existing campaign.

Check out the Updates for all of the details.

Long ago, the Sprites of the Nexus Grove came to the Awakened Woods and founded their new home.  Over the years, they became friends with the animals of the woods and sought to protect them.  The Sprites guard the Awakened Woods fiercely and have used a portion of their fey magic to ward it.  No humanoid or predatory animal has encroached on the forest in more than a hundred years, only those animals that eat plants or insects are able to enter.

The peaceful animals of the Awakened Woods lived in idyllic harmony.

Until one day a fox walked into the woods and everything changed.

This adventure comes with everything you need in order to get started.  You receive:

Adventure Booklet

The 28 page (NOW 32 PAGES), 8" x 5” adventure booklet includes; GM Notes, Detailed Encounters, Setting Information, Campaign Inclusion Advice, Character Creation Information,  and NPC Stat Blocks.

Character Cards

In keeping with the quick-prep style of this RPG adventure, each of the pre-generated animal characters has a basic character sheet provided on a 3.5” x 5.5” card.  It includes their stat blocks, special abilities, and actions following the standards of the Monster Manual.   STRETCH GOAL REACHED! NOW SIX CHARACTER CARDS!

Character and Advancement Cards

 Advancement Cards

These poker-sized cards make gameplay interesting. Twice during the adventure, the player characters will “level up” and these cards represent the changes they’ll go through. Since this is a unique adventure, there are unique features for each animal added.  Designed to stack on the Character Cards, and flip to show the new abilities.

Reference Cards

These cards are pretty self-explanatory and include information on the foes they’ll face and the magic items they’ll interact with.

Maps

Four small maps are included for the combat encounters in this RPG adventure.  While specific to this setting, the maps are abstract enough to be used for any applicable adventure.

Combat Maps

As a writer and a dungeon master, I often challenge myself to use the less common creatures from the Monster Manual in a unique way.  I became intrigued by Appendix A, the section full of regular animals.

Rather than use them as low challenge rating monsters, or stat sheets for shape-shifting, I created an adventure where these tiny animals are the heroes as they battle to save their home.  These are not just re-skinned full-size heroes and I’ve tried to anthropomorphize as little as possible.  You play with stats as found in the Monster Manual (with a few adjustments), low HP, low AC, and very few features.  But with a little help from some fey friends, you’ll find yourself leveling up and fighting heroically.

Why play this adventure?  Or even why create this adventure?  Because I love to put my players into what I call “Interlude Adventures” that force them to think in new ways.  An Interlude Adventure is different than a side quest because the players do not play as their normal characters but are still in the same campaign world.  For example, I’ve had my players spend a session as the citizens of a besieged city their regular characters are about to save.  Another time the players were making a bad choice and spent a session as a different adventuring party that failed and died while making the same choices they’ve been considering.  This kind of supplementary adventure expands a group’s way of thinking and shows the true versatility of D&D.

I’m keeping the rewards simple with only two tiers, a digital and a physical.

At the $17 level, you receive professionally manufactured hard copies of all the adventure components including;

  • Adventure Booklet
  • Pre-Generated Characters Cards (4 total)
  • Advancement Cards (4 total)
  • High-Resolution Combat Maps (4 total)
  • Magical Items and Foes Cards (6 total)
  • All Stretch Goals, Digital and Physical
  • Digital copies of everything

The $6 PDF level gets you the digital versions of everything and any digital stretch goals.

Due to the complexity of shipping internationally, we are only shipping the physical version in the USA.  If you are outside the USA and interested in the physical version, back at the $6 digital level, and after the campaign ends, we'll offer a version at cost for international shipping through a third-party provider so that you can directly pay the shipping cost there.

Character Card and Advancement Card Example

I like stretch goals that add to the project directly.  So if this does well, I’ll plan on expanding the existing content.  More encounters, more player characters, more foes, more maps, more art, etc.  My previous Kickstarter (my first) was more successful than I ever imagined, but I'm the type of person who likes to keep my expectations low.  I’ll just start with a couple of simple stretch goals and we’ll add as we go.

  • $1,000  Additional Pre-Generated Characters ACHIEVED! 2 MORE CHARACTERS ADDED
  • $1,500  Additional Encounters ACHIEVED! MORE ENCOUNTERS ADDED !!
  • $2,000 Character Standees (Digital Printable) ACHIEVED! !
  • $2,500 More Awesome Art ACHIEVED! !
  • $3,000 More Foes Cards ACHIEVED!
  • $3,500 Character Supplement (Digital, 6 more heroes) ACHIEVED!
  • $4,000 Empowered Familiars Booklet (Digital)
  • $5,000 Double Sized Maps
  • $?????  More as we go

Watch the Updates for more info on Stretch Goals as they expand.

I’m a huge fan of Kickstarter, 175 games projects backed and counting.  We're in a golden age of RPGs and board games because of the community on Kickstarter, and other places online.  I'm also a huge fan of RPGs and have been playing and GMing for over 20 years.  I tried my hand at Kickstarter for the first time a few months ago and will always be grateful for the support of my amazing backers.  I learned so much from them and made some great new friends.

I’m in process on another, bigger RPG project, but I wanted to do an additional small campaign to continue to refine my skills at writing RPG adventures, running Kickstarter campaigns, and fulfilling a project. I’m keeping the pledge costs low, the funding goal low, and I’m just hoping to share my ideas with an interested audience.

This is a fairly simple adventure from the manufacturing standpoint, and everything is written, developed, and ready to go.   In my last campaign, I stayed on track for everything, fulfilling to over 1,300 backers within 3 days of my projected target date.  I’m expecting to be complete for physical products in 5-8 weeks after Kickstarter releases funds, depending on volume,  and digital versions will go out soon after the campaign ends once any stretch goals are finalized.

Risks and challenges

There is always some risk when creating something but it should be minimal here. The game is designed, play-tested, and I’ve already had a couple prototypes printed. The digital products will be easy to send out and the manufacturer of the physical products has a great track record with crowdfunding and game production. The only real roadblock we might run into is if this is super successful and it takes extra time for the printing and shipping. Looking forward, I don’t see any major setbacks that would cause issues. I’ll stay in touch all along the way through updates.
