What is this?
Two books to teach you the basics of digitally modelling miniatures for 3D printing using free software, aimed at the absolute beginner, with accompanying model files.
Book 1 - 260 page pdf file + 288 model files - FREE
Book 2 - 239 page pdf file + 124 model files (37 Dwarf Models) - PLEDGE WHAT YOU LIKE
Last year I learned the basics of making digital models for 3D Printing, with no previous experience, no 3D printer, free software and a crappy Windows 7 computer.
Thanks to a host of kind backers, willing to take a chance on a boy with a dream, Kickstarter has helped me to create 2 Books to impart my limited wisdom to you all.
I'm incredibly happy to give you all Book 1 for FREE so as many of you as possible can give it a go and see what you can achieve.
And if you want to hone those skills a little more, Pledge whatever you like for Book 2.
why learn digital modelling?
You can make your own personal miniatures, bring your characters to life, fill those gaps in your army with the miniatures you just can't get anywhere else (I'm thinking gorilla on a motorbike with a tommy gun)
- scenery, bases, conversion pieces
Not just figures, you can make scenery pieces, bits for basing (or the whole base), bits for conversions, war machines, a cool diorama for your latest masterpiece, whatever
- anything you want
You don't need to limit yourself to miniatures, you can design and print all kinds of useful knick-knacks for on or off the game table. How about a Cthulhu paint pallette, a generals croup (pushy stick), a game screen, a paint screen, a display case, brush holder, and so on, and so on, and so on.
yes you can
- You don't need a 3D Printer
You can get decent 3D printers for less than you'd pay for a games console but even if you don't have one you can get your models printed locally or online at reasonable prices.
- You don't need a powerful PC
My computer is about 10 years old and is running Windows 7 and it manages just fine.
- You don't need expensive software
I use 2 software packages in the guides, Sculptris and Meshmixer. Both are completely free.
- You don't need any experience
I'll take you from zero to maybe not hero but one at least, no modelling experience necessary either physical or digital
- You don't need lots of time
Getting good will take time, but learning the basics will not, we will dive straight into the software and you'll be amazed at how quickly you pick things up
why this guide
- start at the absolute beginning
The guide starts where I started, knowing nothing, nothing about the software, nothing about modelling, just a willingness to give it a go.
- small, easy steps
We'll take everything step by step and repeat things to make sure we properly learn them.
- a comprehensive guide
In Book 1 we will learn how to use Sculptris, some additional skills in Meshmixer and how to create, pose and detail a figure ready for printing
- written by a beginner with warts 'n' all
As a beginner I know what was tricky and confusing, I had to figure out why to do one thing and not the other, I know what helped and what didn't. I include the problems and mistakes in the guide along with the work around because the chances are you will hit the same problems at some point
- Book 1 is FREE
I created the first book thanks to kind support from many backers, now I want to offer the book for free so as many people as possible can benefit from it
- Pledge whatever you want for Book 2
I still need support to continue my journey, currently I'm working on some scenery projects but I hope to do a Book 3 (with Orcs and Goblins!) later in the year. Your kind pledges help to fund my development and I am working towards a new PC, professional software and a 3D printer of my own. Having said that I am keen to make Book 2 available to as many people as possible, so pledge how ever much you want even just £1 will help.
Thanks for reading this far, surely I must have peaked your interest. Please consider making a pledge for Book 2 or at least download a free copy of Book 1 to have a little flip through. Give it a try, you won't regret it.
Check the update section for more info and a link to download Book 1.
