"It's not everyday that you come up with a game that has such simplistic sophistication and natural flow to it that it feels like rediscovering some lost ancient game that has been around for millennia, so I guess I should try explain how I done and gone come up with it. "

What's this?

I have invented a great little game, it's called Gaons & Golems

and I am hand making 100 sets to see how people like it

and raise some cash to develop a more professional version

The set will include

  • a printed cloth game board
  • 20 resin cast play pieces (4 Gaons and 16 Golems)
  • 4 colour co-ordinated dice
  • 4 'Lives' tokens
  • Instructions
  • and something to keep it all in

The game boards will be screen printed and the pieces hand cast by me

for this reason I am keeping this run limited to 100 sets only.

If people like the game I will be looking to get it produced in larger numbers

Although this is a beta release and mostly hand made, this is a fully developed and tested game and the set you will receive will be robust and high quality.

The Game

Each player controls a Gaon, a powerful master of arcane, heavenly wisdom, able to breathe life into a man formed of mud and clay - the Golem.

The objective is simple, protect your Gaon and defeat your opponents Gaon.

During the game you will summon up to 4 Golems to help you and you will need a mixture of tactics and luck to succeed.

You can play with 2, 3 or 4 players.

The rules are very simple so you can be up and running in no time.

If you can learn chess, you can learn this

A 2 player game typicallylasts about 5 minutes but can go on longer depending how the dice roll.

The set

The set will come in some kind of secure container and will include the game rules. Currently I am planning to use a tin which I have sourced very cheaply but I am also considering a self-made resin cast box or possibly even a drawstring bag.

I am currently planning to have the game rules printed on playing cards which are quite durable, but I have some other options in mind. The options I go with are very much down to the number of sets I need to produce, but will be suitable and good quality.

The game board will be screen printed on cloth, probably Calico which is an untreated cotton which won't shrink. I chose this because it's cheaper than a printed hard board but also it's washable and folds up nicely to protect your play pieces in the box.

The set includes 4 teams each with it's own colour. Each team has a 6 sided die, a Gaon, 4 Golems and a token used to keep track of the number of lives the Gaon has left.

Game play

All players start with their Gaon on their coloured space on the game board and 1 Golem which can be summoned to any space next to the Gaon.

Each player takes turns, rolling the dice to get their number of moves which can be split between any of their play pieces. If you roll a 6 you can trade your moves to summon a new Golem to an empty space next to your Gaon, up to a maximum of 4.

At the end of your moves you can choose to attack any opponents pieces which are next to yours. Battles are decided by the roll of the dice, highest score wins, if you both score the same, the attacker wins.

Additionally, if you have more than one piece next to the same opponent piece you can make a combi-attack, adding 1 to your score for each additional pieces making the attack, giving you an even greater chance of success.

Whoever loses the battle, loses a life. Gaons have 3 lives but a Golem only has 1, so when they are defeated in battle they are removed from the board. Golems can be summoned again as normal when you roll a 6.

It's all about running away when you are weak, and chasing when you are strong and deciding what risks to take. Fate can be a cruel mistress and the tables can turn very quickly making for an exciting bout.

If you imagine chess with dice, it's something along those lines.

The Play Pieces

I have sculpted a complete set of models including a Gaon and 4 Golems and the Lives token.

I have taken moulds from the sculpts and used them to cast a full set in resin. I will probably change the colours, I wanted red but didn't use enough pigment so I got pink. I also wanted the purple a bit darker and the blue lighter and with a more aqua tone.

I will experiment with pigments to try and get the right colours. I am buying in the dice so I want to try and match the dice colours. I will also try to match the colours printed on the board as close as I can.

You may notice some bubble defects on my prototype set. I hope to eliminate most of these on the sets I produce and will do a quality control check to try to ensure you get a well cast set. You may still get some minor defects in the casts but I shouldn't expect anything too noticeable.

Ready to play?

I think the charm of the game is it's simple rules and it's precarious balance of luck and strategy.

It's great for short games when you maybe don't have time for monopoly.

No two games are the same, even a sharp and experienced player can be scuppered by the dice.

There are only 100 sets available of this limited beta release.

Very, very few people have ever played this game - be the first on your block!

Risks and challenges

The pieces will be cast in resin using silicone moulds taken from my sculpted masters. I'm no professional but I have done this before so I know what I'm doing, I have kept the run limited to 100 sets because I feel confident that I can produce this number of sets on time.

My aim is to match up the colours of the pieces and on the game board with the dice that I am buying in but I would expect some variation.

As the pieces are homemade, I would expect a certain amount of rustic hand craftedness to the final set which I think just adds to the charm, but everything will be robust enough to be used again and again as you would expect from a professionally manufactured game.

I have already priced up the materials and am confident about producing the sets within the budget, even with a smaller take up. Some options like the rules and the box depend very much on how many sets I'm producing but whatever I choose will be suitable and of good quality.

I will keep all backers informed of the progress, but I don't expect any real problems.
