How It Works
The Design Process
The Legacybox is a result of hundreds of hours of designing, prototyping, and testing. Creating a box and kit that could transport such important items was a serious endeavor. We had several concerns during our initial brainstorming, including safety, size, and of course, experience. We wanted to create a kit that functioned well, but also felt as important as the memories it will help transport, and ultimately, preserve.
It took a crash course in corrugated box manufacturing to design and prototype the Legacybox. We learned terms like flute size, essentially the thickness of the cardboard, and how lithograph labels would result in the best print quality. We toured a box manufacturer and convinced them that, yes, we wanted to label both the inside and outside of the box. We even bought (and read) a history of shipping containers to gain inspiration. After several rounds of designing, we came up with a crush proof kit, with smaller, heavier flute interior boxes for organizing your media within the kit. We've gone through several iterations of the Legacybox kit, moving from initial box cut outs through to fully printed digital proofs. We've tweaked, learned, revised and revisit, and are proud of where we have landed.
Everyone’s home movie and photo collection is different. So what size do you make something so versatile? We have years of data on the average families collection so we decided to target that for the number of items. We made dozens of prototypes in varying sizes until we got it right. Each kit can hold up to 40 VHS tapes. Go ahead and try it. But if you have other old media, or not quite as many items, we opted for internal boxes that can be used to organize your memories within the kit or be used as padding. Of course, there’s packing material as well, just in case.
Of course, the Legacybox needed to be an amazing experience, so every detail was designed. The Legacybox is fresh and modern, as we breathe new life into old outdated things. But it also harkens back to times past with subtle vintage touches in the typography and brand. There are many of these subtle touches. We included a handle to easily carry your filled Legacybox. The interior boxes are color coated in three different colors that correspond to the three steps it takes to easily package and send in your order. We included a beautifully designed booklet with custom iconography of all the analog formats we can preserve. And we even lined the interior of the box with a lithography labelled pattern to feel as rich when you open the kit as when you receive it. Literally no detail has been spared.
Ultimately, we’re seeking funding because of the scale needed to make manufacturing and producing such detailed, well-crafted kits possible. There are many up-front investments, including print plates, die cuts, and most importantly, a large enough quantity to meet the minimum for manufacturing the Legacybox kits. Proceeds from this campaign will fund the first batch of Legacyboxes.
Starting at the $59 level, you'll be among the first to receive a Legacybox at a very special introductory price. Each Legacybox is pre-paid for a certain number of home movies or photos and includes everything you'll need to package and send your memories safely. Here are all the packages.

Risks and challenges
We are excited and extremely confident about this project, and have a clear production plan in place, although we understand the risk and challenges we face in producing this kit. Southtree will power the digitization of old media, with over one custom million DVDs created in the past few years, a new digitization studio of over 8,500 square feet, and an awesome team of almost forty dedicated individuals all working from the renaissance city of the south, Chattanooga, TN. Southtree has fulfilled orders for over 35,000 customers and is ready and capable to handle the digitizing aspects of the Legacybox. Southtree is currently equipped to handle the digitization of videotapes, film reels, audio cassettes, photo prints, slides, and negatives.
The most important task we face is sourcing the legacybox kit and materials. We already established great relationships with our manufacturing partners and have gone through over a dozen rounds of prototyping, from box construction to printing methods. We’ve moved beyond initial concept to working with digital proofs of the kit. The next step will be to lock-in the final designs and move forward with the custom die cuts and printing plates. We also have worked with printing shops for the sourcing of the included booklet along with additional associated marketing materials. They are waiting on our go-ahead. We are committed to ensuring the timely delivery of the legacybox kits and will do whatever it takes to make that happen.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
